Companies dont want to invest in low-income areas due to their "risky" nature. When new food developments are created, the surrounding neighborhoods cannot afford the food prices. There is high demand but prices are unaffordable for neighborhoods. There is an understanding that food insecurity comes from the lack of available healthy food but it also stems into poverty, not having the ability to have a sustainable, affordable job. To get a better paying job there is a need for higher education which people in poverty cannot afford, it is a loop created to continue failing low-income neighborhoods.

What most suprised us was the fact that UCSD's CICORE division is working on developing a technology that connects community resources together which will create cheaper, healthier, and closer resources. Furthermore, we learned that food insecurity has a large ripple effect on people's lives. If an individual doesnt eat well they cannot preform their best, if someone cannot preform their best it decreases their likelyhood of being sucessful. Lastly, we learned that there are 600 neighborhoods just in SF that are food insecure, that means they have to walk 2-3+miles to buy food.

Target, Ask, Tactic 1 - Email - Enikia Ford Morthel

For our first target we chose the Superintendent of BUSD, Enikia Ford Morthel. We thought she would be a good target because she is local, in a position of power, and cares about the well being of BUSD students. On her BUSD webpage bio it explains how she views schools and education as a tool for social justice. This made us think she may be interested in the idea we're pitching. Because her power lies within the BUSD system we didn't want to ask for something we knew she couldn't do, so we focused on change she could make within BUSD. We pitched an idea of gardening programs in schools. This would allow kids to grow up seeing how to grow and prepare healthy food, which are valuable life skills they can take to their families and communities and that will help them in their future. Because we don't have a personal connection with her we chose to email her. This way we could lay out all of our thoughts and hopefully we will get a reply.

Tactic 2- volunteering at community garden

As volunteers at City Slicker Farms we were able to explore all that the garden had to offer. We learned that they rent out plots of land to members of the community to help them learn how to garden. We also learned their process of germination (process of seed to plant) and other gardening techniques. While walking around we learned they have a chicken coup, and that they harvest honey from their bees. Their system was beautiful and while we were they we were able to help firsthand with gardening new plants into small patcehs of land. We planted plants on an elevated surface which they called hugelkultur, a way of gardening that is centuries-old. This was our hands on tactic to help us create direct change.

Throughout this project our eyes were opened to the food inequity that is all around us. We learned that food deserts may not only mean there is no store to buy food, but that there is no healthy food in certain neighborhoods. This is extremely intertwined with socioeconomic status and segregation between neighborhoods. We also chose two different ways we could make change: an email and a hands on project. This was valuable because we learned that change can come from us asking others or us going to our communities and helping. If Ms. Ford Morthel replies to us, setting up a time to meet would be a great next step. For the community garden, we could continue to volunteer there because we had a good time.
