I’ve always found the “virgin only survives in horror movies” trope to be interesting. Virginity symbolizes morality, innocence, and purity. I’ve watched a ton of 80s horror movies, and the “final girl” or survivor is often time an innocent virgin and the victims that get brutally murdered are usually deemed “immoral” to the killer. In a way the victims killings become “justified” and the killer has the right to put an end to someone’s life in an attempt to punish them for sins they’ve committed, which can either be taking drugs, having sex, drinking alcohol at a young age, or just being a terrible person.

5c: Something in my life that I’d consider to be classic will be my high school musical DVD collection. I’ve had the DVD’s ever since I was about 9 years old and I’ll never throw them away even though I’m much older now and most likely would never watch “High School Musical” again. It was definitely my favorite movie series growing up, and it’s a part of my childhood so for that it’ll always remain with me wherever I go.

5b: I don't have a myth that is important in my life. I don't know if "Candyman" is a myth but the story of his death is scary. In the horror film made about him; it details how he passed on. He was murdered for falling in love with a white woman he was painting a potrait of. The father found out; he had his hand replaced with a hook and placed honey all over his body for the bees to sting him to death. People believe if you call his name five times in the mirror, he'll come for you and murder you. 

5c: The night on Elm Street has been around since the 1980s. Mai discusses the fact that virginity symbolizes morality, innocence and purity, which it very much does in society. The reason why I consider it a myth is because I consider virginity a social construct, created to make women feel as though they owe men and society an explanation for their bodies and their actions. 

5c: A part of my life that I would consider classical is the fact that I listen to Mozart when I study. Although I attended a Catholic school from kindergarten up until high school, I don’t consider myself a Catholic. In Christianity, there is talk of an afterlife and the kingdom of Heaven. These beliefs tend to give people hope that death isn’t the end of everything. The idea of Heaven also pressures people into being good samaritans and living a virtuous life so that they can earn a better afterlife (i.e. go to Heaven). 

5c: One thing in my life that I would define as classical are my cultural traditions. These cultural traditions have been around since way before my time and still continue today. I have also participated in these traditions practically since birth.

Many people fail because they try to copy others, not realizing that everyone has different questions on their paper." I am not sure if this is considered a myth but I truly live by this saying. You should never be in competition with others but rather with yourself. Your goal is always to be a better version of yourself, not someone else.

The order of the animals were determined by the Great Race. The Jade emperor, ruler of heaven, organized this race and the first twelve that made it across the river will have a year named after them. The rat came in first because it asked the ox for help across the river and jumped off right when they got across. Thus, the ox came in second. Then the tiger, rabbit, and dragon. Right when the horse got across, the snake quickly passed by the horse. The sheep, monkey and rooster were crossing the river together on a raft. When they got off they agreed to give the 8th place to the sheep who was the most kind and comforting one. The monkey got 9th and the rooster in 10th. The dog made 11th place because he was enjoying the water. The pig came in last because he took a nap after eating.  

5c: A part of my life that I would consider classical is the classical wooden tennis racquets that my sister has. Those racquets aren’t used by tennis professionals anymore and are very expensive as they are now a vintage.

I remember learning about this story at a very young. The moral behind the story is deep. The ending still feels unsettling to me since it made me re-access the bad in the good. For example, at the end, when Zeus puts Hope in the Box after complete chaos was unleashed to doom mankind for eternity, he did it so humans wouldn't give up and kill themselves. However, Hope was his greatest evil. It insured that humans would be able to suffer for eternity. As a kid, I found many similarities to Adam and Eve in this myth. Something forbade and a fate for others to have to suffer for eternity. Later in life, I starting thinking it was more of Zeus's fault for giving Pandora the box and the same goes for God as well. We are human after all. Curiosity is not a form of evil. We are made to be tempted. 

One thing in my life that I would describe as a classic is a painting of Jesus Christ that has been hanging in my home ever since I was born. Christians typically have statues laying around in their home. It's somewhat of a tradition that is why I would describe it that way. The story of Orpheus and Eurydice is my favorite tragic love story. Orpheus was known as a talented music player and was said to be the son of god Apollo and the Muse Calliope. On one occasion while playing he met Eurydice who was a wood nymph and quickly enough they both fell in love. They then got married only for her to get bitten by a snake on the day of their wedding. He was distraught by grief and went into the underworld determined to bring his wife back to life. He managed to convince Hades with his grief and music but under one condition; upon leaving the underworld Eurydice would follow Orpheus but he was forbidden to look back or he would lose her forever. Unfortunately, Orpheus was impatient and started to believe that the gods had fooled him. Eurydice was right behind him when Orpheus lost his faith and turned around causing her to be sent back among the dead. I first learned about this story from my older sister who wanted to teach me about patience. Today, I consider myself a very patient person but I still remind myself of their story whenever I start to feel impatient or get anxious about waiting. I am a firm believer in the phrase “patience is a virtue” and I do think that learning about this story has something to do with it.

5c:  One thing in my life that I would describe as a classic would be my mom’s CD collection. It consists of bachata and merengue artists from the 1980s and 1990s. They are definitely super special to everyone in my family as they are big artists in our country (Dominican Republic) and remind us of home. I consider them to be classic because I grew up listening to this music and still do.
