I agree with Marcella Tarigetto. I also think the greatest challenges for teachers could be to move out of the comfort zone, to be aware, and to create or adapt the teaching/learning materials so that we can go beyond a stereotypical view of a country and its people. For example, the pictures or the names are highly stereotypical on schoolbooks and they don't reflect real life around us in the 21st century at all.

The problems are very strong. The italian language often isn't known. The cultural differencies and the traditionals customs are very different. The solution isn't simple. But the integration must be tried with liberal thinking and friendly relationships. It has to be tried forward and coltivated the socialization between students, it has to be superated the problems and difficulties of the language and customs, the students have to collaborate with the their teachers to open themselves to new ideas.

The idea that a good teacher should always be ready to explore different worlds than usual and therefore known to him, is always alive in me. The class teacher too often disdains the update and afraid of innovations, but, as teachers, these are two of the things that they should live very far from us. A good teacher is one who always knows how to catch up with the times, that does not necessarily accept change brings with it negative news. Often, just the change, is a source of positivity. We work with young people, who, by definition, live a different world from the one in which we grew up, with other values, other priorities.

It’s true. I always have to think about my personal history and my communication skills as Erika suggests. In according to which I have to find good tools to use in class as Alicia says: analysis of different countries, comparison of them by highlighting the different points of view as a starting point to reflection. All this to do with videos, many texts or oral presentation about different habits ( this for the first 2 fields Tomislav talks about). Thanks to these descriptions and analysis we can discover the social identity of each one and also the personal background coming out from the education received at home (parental involvement is a key point to understand someone’s behaviour). Step by step it is possible to create a good and a collaborative atmosphere in class to build solid and positive relationships.

In my experience, parent involvement and community relationships are still not fully exploded. It is too easy to say that parents are not involved, but we build a lot more and easy bridges by actually involving the parents in het whole story. This takes time and effort, I have to visit a lot of them at home before we take that first step. In my experience, working on relationships with the community is also very rewarding, for the school, the students and the community itself.

We have to think and feel as our stranger students think.
The diversity is an opportunity but can be a limit and a source of misunderstandings. So when we go into the classroom, at the first, we have to undress of our prejudices and to see to the students with open mind; after, we have to accord our conduct to the habits and culture of the students.
I remember when a was a professor of Italian language at Benghazi University, Libya, I proposed to my students some Italian films which were not suitable to that public because there were scenes of kisses. It was ridiculous or strange for me but gradually I learned to respect the sensibility of my students.

The majority of us is really convinced his/her job consists only in transferring contents. But, everyday we have real people in front of us and it''s quite compulsory trying to know each other even out of our roles. That's what Erika said at the beginning. First of all, we have to know ourselves in the various aspects of our lives. In my teaching experience with foreign students, I've tried to do my best in this sense. The aspect I wish to improve, because in truth I had never thought about it, is the relationships with parents. Indeed the dialogue between teacher and parents is always present, but regarding cultural diversity, I think parents could be a great mine of information and advice for the teachers dealing with different cultural identities.

I’m agree with Alicia, Erika and Tomislav to use original name of students, discover their cultural traditions, taste their food, speak about their religion. We should do this at school and in our private life (restaurants, movies, books, ecc). If the teacher will be carefull to diversity and multiculturalism children will too.

I think that the main and most important aspects are:

1. Be aware of our personal, social, background. We are what we have experienced and learned during our life and we have to consider how this can influence our teaching to foreign students and how much we are tied to our points of view.

2. Move from our Comfort Zone. The second step is to do something different, to experience what is new, trying to understand it and showing respect of what is different. Four years ago I had seven students coming from different parts of Africa. They were minors and they arrived in Italy without their parents, some of them have lost their families. When I met them for the first time I felt they didn't trust me ( a stranger and a woman!) and I think they felt I was scared, too! I was facing something I wasn't prepared to do. I had to break through the wall! I spent days and nights to understand how to do it. Finally a day I went into the class and I started to greet them in their language! I had spent the previous day to find a FULA dictionary on line and to learn some sentences (at school I had pieces of paper hidden in my pocket but they didn't notice them!). From that moment it was love. I think I showed them respect, they understood I was really interested in them.

3 Parental involvement. As Mr Tomislav Tudjiman says, parents are essential to our students carreer. This could be a problem, I think. Sometimes parents are skeptical and they cause to be useless all your efforts. They don't trust you and that's another WALL to break through!

I think that before teaching what we know we have to create empathy with our students.

Moreover, it is important to be open and understand the needs of the learners and their interests in order to use the fittest strategy and way of communication, whether traditional or ITC. I wish to follow their suggestions and examples and, in particular I wish to improve my information technology competences to meet modern needs and learners. There is no particular content or way to follow but, as they suggest in the video, a teacher must blend the best of all he can dispose of. At the centre there must be cooperation, tolerance, openness and professionality. Among the five areas indicated, I think that it is very important to create barriers against the fear of the foreigner seen as the 'other'. Strategies like performances, role-playing, interaction and cooperation must be adopted.

My parents were born in regions in southern Greece, and came in Athens, Greece (the capital town in Greece) when they were adults. I was born and grown up in Athens, Greece. Athens is a city, where the cultural diversity is more evident (comparativerly to other regions in Greece) for two reasons: There haw been internal migration to Athens after WWII. When Greece became host country (for migrants, in the 1990s) Athens lived the cultural diversity to a greater extent . Therefore I feel that the cultural capital of teachers is improtrant in order to manage the cultural diversity.
It is extremely useful for the teachers to reflect on what they have lived with regard to the cultural diversity.
I think that the biggest challenge is to try to understand the cultural diversity: To what extent this diversity works in the context of the other, what is the utility of this diversity in the context of the other and so forth, what is the puprose of thiw diversity in the context of the other and so forth.

We don't have to lose contact with our roots but we have to grow them using all kinds of inputs.
The area we definitely have to work on most is that of partents' involvement: in the area where I teach (and the south of Italy more generally speaking) being a teacher means facing daily problems with narrow-minded families. They feel threatened by anything: people from the "city", people from other villages, people with different skin colour... Students are obviously the product of this: so it is essential to keep a constant contact with parents, to also "educate" them understand what is going on when we work on cultural diversity in the classroom. That I think is a teacher's biggest challenge.

In my opinion it is very important to contact the pupils' parents to find out more information about them. We think in terms of stereotypical families but some of these children have lost their families and had to be "adopted" by others. All these elements and a load of others can help us a great deal in helping and accepting them. Another important issue is the environment that these pupils live. In our school they live in a camp a few kilometres outside the city and everyday they come to school by bus. Moving from one place to another is not the easiest thing and if they don't feel their families close maybe this makes the whole situation a bit hostile.
Building community relationships is the challenge for me. We teach refugee children in a friendly environment, we definitely try to do our best and this is because we are all participating in this course but the local community outside the walls and the playground of the school doesn't accept this new situation and there is always a "YOU ARE NOT WELCOME HER" in the atmosphere.

As pointed out by Erika in the video I think that knowing yourself and your roots is also a very important part, but also the hardest part. Even if you know your origin and the traditions of your country, that doesn't mean you really know yourself. You have to actively think about your values and priorities.

We should share our students the differences and similarities between us, and try to find the things that we all have in common to become an interculturally competent teacher. So, as Tomislav said, we should be guided by those 5 important things to succeed.(language, pedagogy, social identity, parental involvement, and community relationships.

Knowing cultural background of the students will definitely help a teacher to reach understanding. Sometimes the most difficult can be the social issue as it happens to Gypsies in Ukraine because community is not always tolerant to people from different cultures, especially if it is not multi-national community. Stereotypes work wrong here too. Teacher’s role here will be very important, they will have not only to help a student to adapt but to increase other people’s awareness about particular culture.

I think that language is a great barrier, but probably the one we could face easier, because foreign students are immersed in country language. Probably one of the most difficult is being able to involve parents in school educative programmes. Another important thing is the relation between schools and territory in which the school is.

I totally agree with the idea of first knowing thyself and your background as a teacher before delving into your students' cultural identity. In order to allow space for students, in order to accept holistically their presence in the classroom one has to be familiarised with
openess (that is quitting one's comfort zone). Contacting the students' cultures can be easily achieved by
integrating resources from other countries so as to aknowledge these very cultures.
So being open is of utmost importance. As far as skills are concerned among language, pedagogy, social identity, parental involvment and community relationships, I can't tell which one is most important...I think a skilled teacher ought to joggle more or less with all these skills.
For me the biggest chalenge of them all would be to have happy students laughing and participating in the classroom, feelling secure and proud of their learning environment.

School must be an harbinger of society and must be a place, THE PLACE, where everybody can be himself and increase his self-esteem. Psychologic studies show that humans find, know, explore and valorize themself only between the relationship with their “caregiver”, peer and the enviroment too. Only between social life, women and men can discover who they are. Everybody is unique, even twins are unique too. Our culture, our background is what differentiates us. Each of us is the result of our family story and our citizen story. But if someone watches and compares the histories of peoples discovers that they are very similar. So, actually, what differentiates us is what joint us.

School must teach its. Dialogue and cooperation are the most important instruments that can realize it. You can not imagine an intercultural training course without the ability to take different viewpoints putting in "someone else's shoes"!
Respect, empathy, flexibility, patience, interest, curiosity, openness, motivation, sense of humor, tolerance of ambiguity, the suspension of judgment, active listening, the cultural sensitivity, knowledge of other cultures. . As I said, I teach in a Multicultural School, with 1/3 of foreigner students in each class I teach in. I love learning about new traditions, culture systems and so on and I love sharing them with my classes. During these years of teaching I learnt so many things about their families. Unfortunately it's not always simple to "cooperate" with our students families, things that would help to facilitate their integration with the society they actually live in. As a cultural fact I understood that in some cultures school education is not considered as important as in others. Consequently my students families are totally absent and it's impossible to work together for their children to let them live in their new school and in this new society with an eye to the future.

As far as Iam concerned, the trouble is with the first points in Tomislav's list. Nowadays would-be primary school teachers have to attend a university with exams and experiences specifically designed to build a real expertise on teaching habits (here another question arises: is it worth paying the fee to a private and expensive university and studying a lot when you can become, with the same effort, a far better paid, easily employed, socially renomated engineer? I think it's an effective way to select, from the very beginning, only the strong motivated...). But for teachers around fifty things were really different: I studied for four years to become a primary school teacher (Istituto Magistrale) and, then, at the university, I followed a fac intended to train teachers (Magistero Materie Letterarie) but we didn't study almost anything about the real thing and, then, we had to learn the hard way. The problem is: improvisation is good when you are naturally talented, but disastrous in every other case. You can enroll in money and time demanding masters or attend a lot of different courses, as Alice seems to suggest but, in my opinion, they can integrate a strong core, not substitute one. I feel that in job training can't compensate for a weak initial one. Of course we try to focus on all the matters listed by Alicia (in regard of cross-curricular approach, I'm testing EAS, a method that seems to perfectly integrate in every step, from planning to evaluation, flipped classroom, ICT, cooperative learning, skills integration; and a popular passtime in my class is to erase word "races" from textbooks...) but I find that Erika has found the key point here: if someone, deeper down, don't really believe that it's worth going all this way for his students, he'll just do things as a show, to justificate himself. I should really know who I am, which are my limits, why something in a student particularly hurts me to accept myself along with the others.

I’m afraid I’m not the only teacher who normally sees the ideal class in front of him when picturing the next lesson: a homogenous group of willing, easy-to-handle students.

Lara Fontana
It is surely important to have an open mind when we have to manage multicultural situations or problems: we need to be quite sensitive not to hurt foreign students feelings, besides we have to guarantee justice and equity among all the students, not to privilege anyone. Foreigners brings a cultural luggage that can get richer our ones: uses, traditions, habits, ways of life, wearing, even making up may represent an important moment to confront with each other, exchanging experiences and sharing feelings, memories and so on. Families are an enourmous resource for our success: when they cooperate actively and frequently with teachers, students feel more controlled and generally tend to work more and better and to adopt a kinder behaviour at school. The more armonious is the climate in the classroom, the more productive will be the activities by the students. Besides, to know the social contest of a boy/girl, can make the teacher better understanding his/her everyday bad or good behaviours, helping us to correct it or giving it a right and more precise value. In many years of experience in multicultural classrooms i learned a lot about foreign students and i never had problems with them. I feel my methods about it are quite good, but maybe having more time to talk with students may implement my competences in this field.

I believe all those areas are equally important. However I feel that the most significant is our self-knowledge. First and foremost we should take into account our cultural values and our family background. Only if we define our personality and realise who we really are and what we really believe we can accept others. If we manage that introspection leaving behind our prejudices and stereotypes, then it will be easy to allow space to others to express themselves in their familiar environment. Furthemore we will be willing to leave our comfort zone and discuss about things we don't know. Besides learning is not an one-way process but a bidirectional exchange of views. On the other hand due to our limited time in the classroom, it is rarely feasible to create resources and materials which specifically reflect the diversity. Unfortunately lessons here in Greece are more examination oriented. As a result we almost always study special and technical things. However as Alicia said, we can find ways to integrate cultural diversity in the specific topis we discuss. Additionally it is essential need for me to discover more things about their language, their social identity and the parental involvement skills necessary for an interculturally competent teacher as Tomislav indicated. As for the biggest challenge for me I think that the combination of all those above is the most difficult. However if there is strong will and love for what you are doing then everything is easy.

Giuliana ItalyAs for me, all the areas outlined have the same level of importance. They are so intermingled that none of them can be left out. First of all, I find it important to be open to others and accept other ways of thinking. Developing the ability to understand diverse perspectives make easier to communicate effectively across cultures. Consequently, if we base our school activities on the acceptance of other cultures, if we are willing to experiment and integrate diverse resources il will be easier to develop our students’ intercultural competence. However, I must make the point that some colleagues in our schools are sometimes more worried about teaching contents and trasmitting knowledge than to open their mind to other cultures and integrate diversity as a cross- curricular theme.

As Erika said it is very important defining first of all your background as a teacher. This makes it easier to be open at different cultures and other ways of thinking. Moreover Alicia mentioned that it’s important to give others space to realize that it’s ok to have different language or religious. This make them feel accepted from the others and I totally agree! Also, teacher has to be open to learn new things and integrate different sources such as books (not only the typical school books but also books for example about different cultures). If it is necessary teachers can create their own material that is suitable for their students. Cultural diversity can be integrated as a cross-curricular theme. The areas I should work the most on are language, pedagogy, parent involvement, social identity and community relationship, as Tomislav outlined. All of them seem to be big challenges.

This idea encompasses both the need for being open to learning something new from the side of the teacher, and feeling at the center of the school experience from the side of the students. On the other hand, Erika insisted on the idea of letting students with diverse background feel "normal", which is something that puzzles me a bit, as the definition of "normal" in itself is a kind of elusive and may risk to cover the idea of "having to conform to fixed standards".

I think that all of these areas need to be worked on in order to give us the opportunity to restudy them and discover aspects that we haven't put in mind.

The audiovisual materials rendered ten areas considered vital for developing intercultural competence in teachers. From my viewpoint, these areas can be minimized to five; ie. 1 personality skills (encompassing ability for self-reflection and for encouraging communication within a group), 2 pedagogy-didactics, 3 social psychology, 4 parent involvement and 5 language. Taking for granted that the first two and the two last ones are a must for efficient teachers, we are left with knowledge of social psychology issues, which is what I consider absolutely essential for a teacher who wishes to develop intercultural competence in him/herself and in the learners.

In order to create an intercultural environment in our classes, each kid has to feel part of the group. They have to feel proud of their identity and free to share their beliefs with their peers. As Alicia well depicted, diversity should be part of our daily lessons as it is part of our daily life. "Being diverse" is not weird, it is normal because we all are diverse. So we do not have necessarily to plan specific intercultural lessons or modules, but we can simply adapt our daily lessons to be "interculturally-friendly". Choosing a particular topic for our readings or names of people from different countries around the world for our role-plays are simple techniques to involve all the students.
sharing our own beliefs with other and being open to learn from them means being well aware of our culture, customs and traditions, as Erika said.
Finally, being a language teacher, I could not agree more with Tomislav when he highlights the importance of language in the intercultural process. Language and culture are strongly connected and we all should be well aware of the implications of culture in the language learning process and vice versa.

Teaching deaf students is different. Firstly, as a teacher, you have to identify and understand their needs, to know their personal and social background, to use special methods and instruments of teaching, and the most important thing, you have to know the sign language. I find all these things similar to the ones about teaching students of other cultures. I agree with Alicia and Erika, but the perspective of Tomislav is more concrete. Personality, pedagogy, didactics, psychology, language and family background, all together, are a real help for the teacher. Having known all these things, a teacher can create different activities.

Watching Ms. Hummer talking, I could not help but acknowledge the importance of what she says. I have been in german speaking countries as a tourist to live the culture, the mentality and the language and I have never had any discrimination whatsoever. I ‘ve felt equal and well accepted in all classes, in everyday life, eating, shopping, whatever I might have been doing. This is the exact same feeling that I want my students to feel, and this is what I mainly focus on before trying to teach them a language. They are accepted in my classroom, they are welcome both by me and all the students I have in my class. I try to make them all understand from the first lessons that we are a group that works with each other and diversity is fine by all members in this group. Of course sometimes I have to work harder but it is worth the effort. And when the outcome is good (and I try to make sure of it), combined effort success unites my students even more, no matter their previous differences.

Alicia highlights the importance of teaching by example. As teachers, we sometimes forget to include multicultural ressources in our lessons which is really not so difficult to do if we are aware of it. I was thinking about the textbook I'm using and publishers are really trying to focus on multiculturality by using people from different cultural backgrounds, with different accents and names of different origins. This evolution is very noticeable and definitely quite important. The area Alicia also mentions which I really need to work on is to move out of my comfort zone. Below you can see a video I watched on the Internet yesterday which highlights the ability to move out of one's comfort zone in order to reach the learning zone. As teachers, we must remain lifelong learners, including learning about other cultures and we have to accept that we don't know all the cultures our students could share. Trying new things, giving importance to students' cultural background can be out of our comfort zone but an invaluable learning tool for other pupils and for us.

I agre with their speeches. Integration begins in classroom. Teachers and later (thanks to them) students should be open minded and curios to know, to learn from other ways of acting, of living of thinking. Teachers should use, integrate, work on different materials, different resources from different cultures.Teacher should be The first witness of The welcome,of The integration. The biggest challenge is this one.

Each speech of the instructors has a piece of truth inside. First of all, as Ms Erica mentioned is to identify ourselves and who we are. What are our values and our backgrounds and accept ourselves. If we succeed in this first step, it will be easier after to accept others and other ways of thinking. Second step as Ms Alicia mentioned, is to show the students who they really are and to help them to accept themselves and show them that nothing on this Earth is a copy of something else. For example if you observe a tree you will soon realise that non of its leaves is the same. And this is the beauty of the tree. Thirdly, teachers need to be openminded and supporting the acceptance in the class, so after the students will be free to reveal themselves and finally they will not be afraid to show who they are. In contrary, they will be proud of who they are. In conclusion, as Mr Tomislav said, teachers should have some needed skills to accomplish cultural diversity in the class. One of them is not to be xenophobic and to apply a pedagogical way of approaching and communicating with the children. Last but not least, parents are playing a significant role in their children school life and they need to be definitely involved.

Only in this way students could learn to respect the opinions of others, are open to multiple perspectives on any issue and consequently they have mutual respect.
Especially with Alicia. Maybe also the schools programs have to be changed i think, a good first institutional step to do! i hope to improve all these things i mean.

I believe that developing the different languages, the pedagogical idetità of the various disciplines, social identity and especially the involvement of parents even in the projects organized by students and teachers is fundamental to developing inclusive learning environments for all students.

I am absolutely convinced that to develop real intercultural competence it is necessary to reflect on the values in general, on the “value difference” in particular. My thought is this sythesized from these words that represent for me a kind of “manifesto"
"When you come back to school looks good all your
classmates and you will notice that they are all differentthem, and this difference is a good thing. It is a good opportunity for humanity. Those children come from different horizons,They are able to give you things you have not,as you can give them something that they do not know. The mixture is a mutual enrichment.Know that each face is a miracle. It's only. You will never find two completely identical faces. Each face is the symbol of life and every life deserves respect."From T. B. Jelloun, Racism Explained to My Daughter.
However, one aspect is particularly close to my heart and that is the parental involvement.
Today the daily lives of many children, teens and adults is characterized by the encounter with the “other”.The differences are not only evoked, sought after, feared as possible events located elsewhere, but I'm here, living spaces and common areas. The inclusion of children who came from afar, with different histories and cultural affiliations, and the relationship with foreign parent fee for educators and teachers a confrontation with different views, with other modes of communication with other beliefs and valuesThe questions are many. How to communicate emotions, rules, daily indications in children and adults who speak a different language? How to propose a comparison with the differences - somatic, religious, cultural, linguistic? How to welcome in places of all, without denying and devalue the history, references and memberships of each? How to handle the differences in school and avoid trivializing or emphasize them.Foreign parents of the children are in school the first area of everyday communication with the host society. In many cases they access them with feelings of fear and distrust, as well as with high expectations, since they are to entrust their children to an institution "other" language, values, religion, practices. But the erosion of fear of the culture of origin, can result in premature acculturation, it is set aside and passed in the name of the project success of their children.

A teacher should put him at ease and introduce him to the rest of the class as an important and completely equal peer to the rest of the class. Than, little by little, thanks to a lot of different "social" activities he has to create a climate of positive relationships first and friendship later, in order to let a worthwhile exchange of culture, religion, traditions, language and so on.

To be an interculturally competent teacher is not easy. Indeed, we need to be prepared to deal with diversity from a variety of perspectives. First, we need to know different cultures and values and be open to them, that is, we must like diversity and perceive it as something normal, not exceptional. Second, we need to be learners (and not only teachers). I mean, we must be open to new things and bring them to our class. Third, we must be able to create multicultural resources by integrating a variety of cultures in our lessons. Interculture should become a cross-curricular theme: teachers should cooperate to develop multicultural practices with their students.
Last but not least, teachers should reflect on their own culture: this is definitely the first step to be open to different cultures and to promote effective intercultural communication.
