Ho Chi Minh Trail

This was a series of trails, ussed by North Vietnemese as a route for their troops to get to the South.The trial was 1,000Km in leneght, it ran along Laos and Vietnam borders.The trail consisted of dummy routes that were used to trick and confuse Americans. The trial was 50 milee wide. it took 40,000 people to keep the route open. The Americans response to this was Agent Orange, to kill off the greener

that gave cover to those using the trial.

Operation Rolling Thunder (1965-1968

Operation Rolling Thunder was a

sustained strategic attack campaign of the US air force and the Republic of Vietnam Air Force against North Vietnam. Operation Rolling Thunder utilized heavy aerial bombardments on North Vietnam in an attempt to destroy North Vietnam's transportation, resources, and bases, as well as to halt the flow of men into South Vietnam.

Robert S. McNamara

U.S. Secretary of Defense (1961-1968)

Robert S. McNamara was one of they key leaders of US strategy during the Vetnam War. He, serving unde rboth ennedy and Johnson, was a strong figure for controversy among Vietnam protestors, as he supported rigorous advancement of US offense. In 1967, he ordered a study of US involvemnt in Indochina (which were leaked to the public), revealing that the US had ground forces in Vietnam long before the public was notified. In 1968, he resigned from his position.

Search and Destroy Missions

Search and destroy missions were missions in which ground forces were deployed directly into hostile territory to search for and destroy enemy positions.

They were the reason for the development of new tactics such as helicopter raids.

The Gulf of Tonkin Resoltuion

August 7, 1964

The Gulf of Tonkin Resolution gave broad congressional approval for expansion of the Vietnam War. President Johnson requested this resoltuion following the attack of multiple US ships including the US detroyer Maddox. Although the attacks were originally reported to have been by the North Vietnamese, the allegations were later found to be mistaken.

J William Fullbright

A US Senator who sponsored the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution. Fullbright was a Southern Democrat from Arkansas, who was in the Senate for 30 years. Mostly, however, Fullbright opposed the Vietnam war, as well as McCarthyism and other forms of Communist hunting. Fullbright was opposed to the US involvemnt in Vietnam because he was opposed to US interventionism.

Defoliants

Defoliants, most famously Agent Orange, were chemicals that the Air Force dumped onto the forest to reveal North Vietnamese positions. The defoliants were extremely harmful to the soldiers and civilians on all sides, and many people to this day have health issues because of them.

Ngo Dinh Diem

Vietnamese President (1955-1963)

Ngo Dinh Diem was the Vietnamese President from 1955-1963. He gained US support for his anti-communist ways and made himself president in 1955. However, by imprisoning and murdering hundreds of Buddhists, he lost his US backing and was assassinated in 1963. The new surge of communist resistance following his death left Vietnam vulnerable and resulted in civil war.
