Military Reconstruction Act

The Military Reconstruction Act was a law that divided the South into 5 military districts. The government then sent the military into these districts to enforce the law. The law was enacted because the law enforcement in the South wasn't doing a good job of upholding the law. The southerners reacted in many different ways, but most of them didn't like the fact that the military had invaded their land and was enforcing the laws that they didn't like.

The Role of African Americans During Reconstruction

This is a picture of some of the first African American officeholders. The man in the middle is Hiram Revels, the first African American senator. The other men are African American representatives. The 15th Amendment helped make all these accomplishments possible for these men because it states that citizens of the United States are not allowed to be denied the right to vote because of race, color, or previous servitude. This Amendment allowed African Americans to vote for the first time which aided in more African Americans being elected to office since there were so many of them in the country.

How my Life has Changed Since the Civil War

Dear Diary,
It is March 16, 1866 and I guess you could say that a lot has changed for me lately ever since I had to let my slaves go. I've been losing money and I still want to grow crops to help me with that problem, but I am only one person and since I'm losing money already I cannot afford to pay people to work for me since slavery has been outlawed. I've thought about sharecropping my plantation, but that will also require me to provide things for the people who work for me, so I am not sure I will be able to do that. Hopefully I'll be able to find an answer to my problem soon.

President Abraham Lincoln was shot dead at Ford's Theater on April 15, 1865 by actor, John Wilkes Booth. Lincoln died at the age of 56. He was born on a farm about three miles south of Hodgenville, Kentucky. He was the child of Thomas and Nancy Lincoln. Before Lincoln died, he worked hard to bring the Civil War to an end and rid this country of slavery. He was a very noble man and president, but unfortunately his term was cut short. His successor is Andrew Johnson who will take office shortly. May he rest in peace.

Was Reconstruction a Success or Failure?

I believe reconstruction was a failure because even after the so called "reconstruction" was over, the people of the United States still weren't treating African Americans equally which was essentially the point of the Civil War in the first place. Reconstruction may have helped fix some aspects of post Civil War America, but overall, there was not a lot of change. The Southerners and even some Northerners still didn't treat African Americans equally even after laws were passed that enforced equality. Also, even though the Confederate states had officially become a part of the union again, there was still an unspoken divide. For example, even up into the 1950's and 60's, African Americans still didn't have the same rights as the white man, and it was mostly still in the south. That's about when the KKK started to resurface again as well, proving that reconstruction only made a lot of issues silent for a while.
