Ratul Puri on Coal Gasification and India’s Energy Transition

Coal gasification is emerging as an important part of India's broader energy-security strategy. According to Ratul Puri, Chairman of Hindustan Power, the technology can help India leverage its domestic coal resources to produce critical industrial inputs while reducing dependence on imports.

Balancing India’s Energy Security and Clean Energy Goals

India’s energy transition requires a balance between clean energy ambitions, economic growth and energy security. While solar and wind are expanding rapidly, energy-intensive industries still require reliable, high-temperature energy, while import dependence creates additional vulnerabilities.

Ratul Puri on India’s Clean Energy Future

When we talk about the clean energy-focused future of India, two contrasting realities emerge: one of a traditional coal-dependent India and one of a far-sighted clean, renewable energy future. Ratul Puri says that, to fulfill the demands of a 1.4 billion-strong population, the safer approach would be that of creating a fine balance between economic growth and India’s climate commitments.

Meeting the Energy Needs of Energy-Intensive Industries

While solar and wind energy generation is working at its finest capacity, an important gap remains in meeting the energy needs of energy-intensive industries. When we talk about chemical refineries, heavy manufacturing and agriculture sectors, they require high-temperature heat that cannot be supplied by solar and wind alone. Moreover, most clean energy components are imported, leaving the nation vulnerable to trade wars, geopolitical flash points and global market disruptions.

Coal Gasification and India’s Energy Security

It is due to these reasons that India is now considering returning to its long-standing asset, which is coal. The Union Minister for coal and mines recently noted that coal gasification will be crucial in supporting energy security, curbing imports and boosting industrial growth. India has an estimated 400 billion tonnes of coal reserves, among the world’s largest, which still plays a crucial role in energy generation. Coal alone amounts for 55% of its energy mix and almost 74% of electricity generation. Further, coal’s annual demand of around one billion tonnes is anticipated to soar significantly by 2047. Despite being heavily reliant on coal, India is making steady progress towards meeting its net-zero commitment by 2070.

Reducing Import Dependence Through Coal Gasification

The Government of India has been promoting coal gasification as part of its broader strategy to improve energy security and reduce import dependence. India has set a target of achieving 100 million tonnes of coal gasification capacity by 2030, with government support aimed at accelerating investments in the sector. Ratul Puri believes that the technology could help create domestic production capacity for products that India currently imports in significant quantities, strengthening both energy security and industrial resilience. Keeping in mind that around 83% of natural gas and more than 90% of fertilizers and methanol are imported, the Central Government has prioritised energy security as a strategic imperative.

Applications of Coal Gasification Across Key Industries

Coal gasification can have important applications across several sectors. In agriculture, syngas can be processed to produce hydrogen and ammonia, which are essential inputs for fertiliser production. Increasing domestic production of these inputs could help reduce dependence on international markets and improve the resilience of agricultural supply chains. In transport and industry, syngas can be converted into methanol, while gasification-derived chemicals can support industries such as paints, plastics and pharmaceuticals.

Ratul Puri on Strengthening Domestic Manufacturing

For Chairman Ratul Puri, the significance of coal gasification extends beyond merely converting coal into another form of energy. It represents an opportunity to strengthen India's domestic manufacturing ecosystem by converting locally available resources into higher-value industrial products. By reducing dependence on imported natural gas, fertilisers, methanol, and chemicals, India could retain more foreign exchange in the domestic economy while building greater resilience against global supply disruptions.

Carbon Capture and Cleaner Coal Gasification

Gasification produces a concentrated CO₂ stream, making it well suited for Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) applications. The captured carbon can either be securely stored underground or utilised to produce value-added products such as solid carbonates and synthetic fuels. With effective carbon management and the integration of biomass into gasification processes, India can reduce the overall carbon footprint of its heavy industries while supporting a more sustainable industrial transition.

Coal Gasification and the Make in India Mission

According to Ratul Puri, the transformation of coal into value-added industrial products can strengthen India’s critical manufacturing base while advancing the Make in India mission. Ratul Puri also says that the future of coal in India extends beyond traditional power generation, with coal gasification and value-added applications creating opportunities for a more diversified industrial ecosystem. This evolving approach can support India’s energy security, reduce dependence on imported industrial inputs and contribute to a more competitive and progressively greener economy.

About Ratul Puri

Ratul Puri is the Chairman of Hindustan Power, an integrated power generation company with a strong presence in renewable and transitional energy generation.

Ratul Puri on India’s Renewable Energy Sector: From Capacity Growth to System Integration

India is on its way to developing a new sustainable energy future with its clean energy mission. Development of a nation is not measured by how much a nation builds for its people but by how meaningfully those advancements improve the lives and opportunities of its people. With over 50% of the nation's installed capacity now powered by non-fossil fuels, the country has demonstrated strong capability in rapid energy capacity. But the gap lies in the effective transmission of electricity. Now, the industry is transitioning to a more sophisticated challenge: building an integrated power system that delivers clean energy reliably, round the clock.

Ratul Puri, Chairman of Hindustan Power, talks about how India’s growth will not only depend on adding capacity but also on strengthening storage, supply chain and grid integration.

Energy Storage: The Game Changer

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) is not just a technology now, it has become the next important infrastructure requirement for India to achieve the clean energy mission. Government policy support has established BESS as economically viable and essential for grid stability.

Major hybrid renewable projects are gaining momentum across states. According to Chairman Ratul Puri, these installations represent the industry's commitment to round-the-clock clean power, a capability that can strengthen India’s position in the global transition.

Strengthening Grid Integration for Renewable Growth

As India expands renewable capacity, stronger transmission networks and greater grid flexibility will be essential to efficiently deliver clean power to consumers. Solar generation can fluctuate with weather and differ through daytime and nighttime, making storage increasingly important for balancing supply and demand.

BESS can store surplus renewable power during periods of high generation and release it when demand rises, helping India build a more flexible, reliable and integrated power system.

Building Multiple Revenue Streams for Storage

For storage to move beyond a policy-supported market and become a commercially sustainable asset class, projects will increasingly need access to multiple revenue streams.

Ancillary services, peak-load management, energy arbitrage and grid balancing can create additional opportunities for BESS operators. A broader market framework could improve project economics while allowing storage assets to provide several services to the electricity system.

Financing models are also likely to evolve as regulatory clarity improves and the commercial role of storage becomes better understood. Greater visibility around revenue mechanisms can help attract long-term capital and support larger-scale deployment.

Conclusion: The Next Phase

India’s renewable journey has just started, with the focus on delivering the capacity generated. The ability to integrate renewable generation, strengthen transmission networks, deploy storage and manage increasingly complex electricity flows will determine how effectively the country can translate its renewable potential into reliable power.

As India moves towards its 500 GW non-fossil fuel capacity target, Chairman Ratul Puri believes that the priorities are becoming clearer: faster project execution, stronger transmission infrastructure, resilient supply chains, commercially viable storage and better coordination between generation and demand.

The next chapter of India’s renewable energy story will therefore be about building not just more clean-energy capacity, but a more flexible, reliable and intelligent power system capable of delivering clean electricity around the clock.

About Ratul Puri

Ratul Puri is the Chairman of Hindustan Power, an integrated power generation company with a strong presence in renewable and transitional energy generation.

Battery Storage, Distributed Generation and AI Will Define India's Next Energy Transition: Ratul Puri

India's clean energy transition is entering a new phase where expanding renewable capacity alone will no longer be enough. According to Ratul Puri, Chairman of Hindustan Power, the country's long-term energy ambitions now depend on developing the supporting infrastructure that enables renewable electricity to be delivered reliably and efficiently.

Speaking in an interview with Business World, Ratul Puri said India's electricity demand is steadily rising across residential, commercial, industrial, transportation, and digital infrastructure. Meeting this growing demand will require battery storage, stronger transmission networks and distributed renewable generation to evolve alongside renewable capacity, creating a more resilient and reliable power ecosystem.

Battery Storage Will Unlock India's Renewable Energy Potential

For Chairman Ratul Puri, battery storage is the missing link in India's renewable energy transition. While the country has made significant progress in expanding solar and wind capacity, renewable energy alone cannot provide uninterrupted electricity throughout the day. Batteries are an important part of the global energy system today and are here to play a critical role in securing clean energy transitions, the IEA states in one of its reports.

He directed the need for battery storage towards fluctuations in solar generation and wind speed falls. During this scenario, thermal power plants are brought back online to maintain electricity supply. These plants are backed down during periods of high renewable generation and restarted during evening demand peaks, increasing the overall cost of operating the power system.

Instead of investing in additional coal-fired power plants that remain underutilised for several hours every day, Ratul Puri believes India should accelerate investments in battery energy storage. Although storage technologies still require substantial investment, battery prices have fallen significantly over recent years, making them increasingly viable. According to Ratul Puri, storage will be one of the most important investments India can make over the next decade to support its clean energy transition and reduce dependence on conventional power sources.

Rising Electricity Demand Is Making Storage More Critical

India's growing electricity demand is no longer being driven by a single sector. Consumption is increasing simultaneously across households, industries, commercial establishments, transportation and data centres, which is placing greater pressure on the country's power infrastructure.

According to Ratul Puri, battery energy storage systems will play a central role in balancing renewable generation with this growing demand. With the vision of a round-the-clock energy demand, battery storage systems will play a significant role. By storing surplus electricity generated during the day and supplying it during periods of peak demand, storage can help deliver reliable, on-demand power while improving overall grid efficiency.

As renewable energy becomes a larger share of India's electricity mix, Chairman Ratul Puri believes storage will become essential for ensuring energy security and supporting the country's long-term development goals.

Distributed Renewable Generation Can Reduce Transmission Bottlenecks

Alongside battery storage, Ratul Puri believes India should increasingly adopt distributed renewable generation instead of concentrating large renewable projects in only a few locations.

He explained that transmitting renewable electricity across long distances adds high costs and places additional pressure on transmission infrastructure. Developing renewable energy closer to where electricity is consumed can improve delivery efficiency, reduce transmission losses, and create a more balanced power system.

According to Chairman Ratul Puri, India has sufficient renewable potential across multiple states to support localised power generation. As transmission infrastructure continues to expand, distributed renewable generation will become increasingly important in delivering affordable and reliable electricity to consumers.

AI and Data Centres Are Creating a New Opportunity for India's Power Sector

Artificial Intelligence is emerging as one of the biggest drivers of future electricity demand, and Ratul Puri believes this presents a significant opportunity for India.

He explained that AI ultimately depends on three key elements such as processing power, advanced computing infrastructure, and reliable energy. While access to advanced GPU capacity remains a global challenge, electricity availability has become one of the biggest constraints in building new data centres worldwide.

As countries such as the United States, Europe and Japan face increasing challenges in expanding data centre capacity, Ratul Puri believes India can emerge as an attractive destination for AI and digital infrastructure by ensuring reliable, affordable and locally available electricity.

Building Renewable Energy Closer to Data Centres Will Improve Power Delivery

While acknowledging that India's transmission grid continues to face bottlenecks, Ratul Puri believes these challenges will encourage a more distributed approach to renewable energy development.

Rather than depending on electricity transmitted over long distances, future data centres and industrial hubs will benefit from renewable generation located nearby. Developing local renewable supply chains around major demand centres can improve reliability, reduce pressure on transmission networks and strengthen regional power infrastructure.

According to Ratul Puri, the rapid expansion of AI, data centres and digital infrastructure will itself encourage greater investment in renewable generation, transmission and supporting electricity infrastructure across the country.

An Integrated Energy Ecosystem Will Power India's Next Phase of Growth

For Ratul Puri, India's next phase of energy transition is not simply about installing more renewable capacity. It is about building an integrated energy ecosystem where renewable generation, battery storage, transmission infrastructure and distributed power systems work together to deliver reliable electricity.

As electricity demand continues to rise across industries, transportation, households and AI-driven digital infrastructure, Ratul Puri believes India's ability to strengthen every part of the power value chain will determine the success of its clean energy transition. Building this integrated ecosystem, he says, will not only improve energy security but also position India as a competitive destination for future investment and economic growth.

About Ratul Puri

Ratul Puri is the Chairman of Hindustan Power, an integrated power generation company with a strong presence in renewable and transitional energy generation.

Ratul Puri on Renewable Energy, Transmission and India’s Energy Security

India’s energy transition is entering a new phase. The country is rapidly expanding renewable energy capacity while electricity demand continues to rise across industries, manufacturing, transportation, digital infrastructure and households. As solar and wind become a larger part of the power mix, the focus is increasingly shifting towards how this electricity can be connected, transmitted and delivered reliably.

For Ratul Puri, Chairman of Hindustan Power, renewable energy expansion is closely linked with India’s long-term energy security. Increasing clean power generation is important, but it must be supported by the infrastructure and systems required to deliver electricity efficiently to consumers.

Renewable Energy Growth Is Creating New Opportunities

India has made significant progress in expanding solar and wind power. Falling technology costs, competitive procurement and increasing investment have helped renewable energy become an important part of the country's electricity system.

The next stage of this growth will require projects that can contribute meaningful generation capacity while supporting the changing electricity requirements of individual states and the wider economy.

Hindustan Power's 435 MWp solar project in Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh, is an example of this expanding renewable energy development. The project was awarded through a tender from Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) in 2025 and is backed by a long-term Power Purchase Agreement.

The project has now achieved financial closure with the Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA) for debt financing of ₹1,135 crore.

The development represents an important step in the company's renewable energy expansion and is expected to contribute to Uttar Pradesh's growing clean-energy capacity.

Large-Scale Solar Can Support Rising Power Demand

Uttar Pradesh is experiencing increasing electricity requirements as industrial activity, urbanisation and economic development continue to expand.

Large renewable energy projects can help meet part of this growing requirement while increasing the contribution of clean electricity to the state's power mix.

The 435 MWp Lalitpur project is expected to supply power under its 25-year PPA, providing a long-term framework for renewable electricity generation.

Commenting on the project, Ratul Puri said that the development marks an important milestone in Hindustan Power's renewable energy expansion, particularly as Uttar Pradesh faces growing energy demand alongside an increasing focus on renewable energy.

He also highlighted the importance of timely execution and developing large-scale renewable infrastructure that can support India's evolving energy requirements.

Renewable Generation Needs Strong Transmission

Building renewable generation capacity is only one part of the energy transition. Electricity generated by solar and wind projects must reach homes, businesses and industrial centres.

This makes transmission infrastructure a critical component of India's renewable energy expansion.

Renewable resources are not evenly distributed across the country. Areas with strong solar and wind potential may be located far from major demand centres. Transmission networks therefore need to connect generation-rich regions with areas where electricity consumption is growing.

As India adds more renewable capacity, transmission planning will need to develop alongside generation projects rather than after them.

A Stronger Grid for a Changing Energy Mix

Solar and wind power also introduce new characteristics into the electricity system. Solar generation changes throughout the day, while wind generation varies with weather conditions.

At the same time, electricity demand is changing as industries expand, transportation becomes increasingly electrified and digital infrastructure grows.

A modern power system therefore needs stronger transmission networks, better forecasting and more responsive grid-management systems.

This will allow India to integrate larger amounts of renewable electricity while maintaining reliable power supply.

For Ratul Puri, the country's energy transition is ultimately about developing reliable, efficient and sustainable generation capacity that can contribute to long-term energy security.

Storage Can Support Renewable Integration

While transmission remains fundamental, energy storage can provide additional flexibility as the share of renewable energy increases.

Battery Energy Storage Systems can store electricity during periods of high renewable generation and make it available when demand increases or renewable output falls.

This can be particularly useful for solar power, where generation is concentrated during daylight hours while electricity demand can remain high later in the day.

Storage, therefore, can complement renewable generation and transmission as India develops a more flexible electricity system.

About Ratul Puri

Ratul Puri is the Chairman of Hindustan Power, an integrated power generation company with a strong presence in renewable and transitional energy generation.

Ratul Puri: Why India's Clean Energy Transition Needs Patient Capital

Talk to enough people in India's energy sector and you'll notice something odd: nobody really argues about whether the country can hit its clean energy targets on paper. The panels get built, the projects get announced, the auctions get won. The real trouble starts later, in the boring middle stretch between "project awarded" and "power flowing" — and that's the stretch Ratul Puri keeps coming back to when he talks about what's actually holding India back.

His argument is fairly simple, even if the finance world tends to dress it up in jargon: solar parks and transmission lines and battery storage don't pay back on the timelines most capital is looking for. These are projects that take years to build and years more to earn out. And a lot of the money currently chasing India's energy boom behaves more like it's looking for a quick flip than a decade-long bet. Ratul Puri calls this a mismatch, and once you hear it framed that way, it's hard to unsee it in almost every stalled project you read about.

It's Not a Technology Problem

This is probably the part of Ratul Puri's thinking that stands out most. He's not out there arguing that India needs better panels or smarter grid software or more land — most of that groundwork already exists. What's missing, in his view, is patient money. Capital that's willing to sit with a project through its slow, unglamorous early years instead of expecting returns to show up on a three-year fund cycle.

He points to institutions like IREDA as proof that this kind of financing can work — patient, sector-specific lending that actually understands what a long-gestation infrastructure asset looks like. But he's also quick to say that one agency, however well-run, can't carry the financing load for an entire national transition. India needs a lot more of this kind of capital, not just a good example of it.

Why the Gap Gets More Painful Every Year

As 2030 gets closer, this stops being an abstract financing debate and starts becoming the actual bottleneck. Every gigawatt India wants to add needs someone willing to underwrite years of construction risk before a single unit of power gets sold. Without that, Chairman Ratul Puri warns of a pattern that's honestly already visible if you look closely: ambitious targets, competitive auctions, plenty of headlines — and then projects quietly stalling at the financial closure stage because nobody's capital actually fit the risk.

Financing Deserves as Much Attention as Policy

Ratul Puri has made this case in rooms far beyond just energy conferences — including through his work with CII's power sector committee, where he's pushed the idea that financing structure and capacity targets can't really be discussed separately. It's a fair point. India has spent a lot of energy (no pun intended) refining auction design and land acquisition rules. Far less attention has gone into asking whether the capital markets around clean energy are actually built for the kind of decade-long bets this sector demands.

What he'd like to see more of: sovereign wealth funds, pension funds, long-duration infrastructure investors — the kind of money that's structurally comfortable waiting. Not because it's virtuous, but because that's simply what this asset class requires. Getting more of that kind of capital interested in India, he argues, deserves just as much policy energy as anything happening on the auction side.

The Honest Takeaway

Strip away the finance vocabulary and Ratul Puri's point is almost disarmingly simple: hitting a target on a government roadmap is only half the job. The other half — quieter, less photogenic, easy to overlook — is building a pool of capital patient enough to actually see these projects through to completion.

India's clean energy transition isn't short on ambition. What it's short on, if Ratul Puri is right, is patience — the financial kind. And that's arguably the harder thing to build.

About Ratul Puri

Ratul Puri is the Chairman of Hindustan Power, an integrated power generation company with a strong presence in renewable and transitional energy generation. Over the years, Chairman Ratul Puri has been involved in the development of large-scale energy infrastructure projects that support India’s growing power requirements and its transition toward cleaner energy.

Ratul Puri on Representing Indian Industry at the World Economic Forum

For more than a decade, Ratul Puri, Chairman of Hindustan Power, has brought conversations around India's energy sector to one of the world's most influential platforms, the World Economic Forum. As a Young Global Leader and an active WEF partner, Ratul Puri has used this platform not only to discuss his company's perspective but also to highlight the wider ambitions and challenges faced by Indian industry as it responds to an energy transition that continues to evolve globally.

Global forums such as Davos can sometimes seem far removed from the practical realities of developing infrastructure in emerging markets. However, he has consistently used his participation to connect these two perspectives, bringing the practical challenges of expanding clean energy in India into discussions with global policymakers, investors, and industry peers. This ability to connect detailed industry realities with broader policy discussions has made Ratul Puri a recurring participant in WEF engagements over the years.

A Track Record of Global Engagement

In 2016, Ratul Puri Chairman led a discussion on climate resilience at the World Economic Forum. The engagement reflected India's increasing role in global discussions about how emerging economies can balance economic growth with decarbonisation. His participation was not limited to a single appearance. He has continued to engage with the Forum over the years as part of a group of Indian industry representatives who participate in these conversations consistently.

That continued engagement is important because global energy and policy discussions are rarely resolved in one meeting. They develop through years of dialogue, relationship building, and continued participation. By returning to the WEF platform over time, Puri has been able to contribute a perspective that considers both the ambitions and practical limitations influencing India's energy sector.

A Message Rooted in Realism

One of the key themes in his WEF engagements is that India cannot simply adopt energy transition models developed for advanced economies. A country of India's size, energy requirements, and economic ambitions needs a pathway that considers affordability, grid preparedness, access to financing, and energy security for more than a billion people while continuing to increase the use of cleaner energy sources.

This is a theme Ratul Puri has discussed across different platforms, including WEF. It reflects the idea that global climate discussions become more practical when they take into account the operating realities of emerging markets along with the broader ambitions of developed economies. His participation in these forums has often brought this practical perspective into wider conversations around the energy transition.

Connecting Global Dialogue to Domestic Policy

Ratul Puri's international engagement is closely connected with his work on domestic industry and policy matters. As Chairman of the Power Committee at CII – Northern Region, Ratul Puri has worked on issues including financing structures, regulatory clarity, and grid infrastructure that can support India's renewable energy targets. He has also co-chaired the Energy track at the India National Strategy Day, contributing to discussions on innovative financing models for the sector. These subjects also form part of the way India's energy story is discussed with international audiences.

The connection between domestic policy discussions and participation on global platforms adds context to Puri's WEF engagements.

Ratul Puri on Flexible and Reliable Energy Systems

Q 1. Hindustan Power has been a pioneer in India’s renewable energy sector. Can you take us through the company’s journey and some of the key milestones that have shaped its growth?

India’s energy landscape has witnessed a remarkable transformation over the past two decades and Hindustan Power has been an integral part of that journey since its early stages. We entered the renewable energy sector when solar power was still an emerging technology and long before it became a central pillar of India’s energy transition.

Some of our early defining achievements include developing India’s first 5 MW solar power project (2010) and Asia’s first 30 MW solar PV project (2011). These projects were important not only because they broke new ground technologically, but because they demonstrated that large-scale renewable energy could be commercially viable and contribute meaningfully to the country’s energy mix.

As the sector evolved, so did our vision. We expanded our presence across renewable energy, transitional power generation and supporting infrastructure, building capabilities that allow us to address both sustainability and energy security requirements. In recent times, we have strengthened our focus on battery energy storage and integrated energy solutions, recognising that the future of the sector will be shaped by the reliable delivery of clean energy.

Today, as we work towards building a 5 GW energy portfolio, our focus remains steadfast on creating scalable, future ready infrastructure that supports India’s economic growth while contributing to a more sustainable and resilient energy ecosystem.

Q 2. The company developed India’s first 5 MW solar plant and Asia’s first 30 MW solar PV project. How have these early achievements influenced your long-term strategy in clean energy?
Those projects were significant in terms of their scale at the time and in demonstrating that renewable energy could transition from concept to commercial viability. They gave us first-hand experience in developing, financing and operating large clean energy assets in a market that was still finding its footing.

More importantly, those early projects taught us that energy transitions are never static. Technologies evolve, customer expectations change and grid requirements become more complex. That understanding continues to shape our strategy today.

We are moving beyond a capacity-focused approach to renewables. We are focused on building energy systems that combine generation, storage, flexibility and reliability. The lessons from our early investments in solar energy taught us the value of staying ahead of technology cycles and anticipating future trends rather than simply responding to where the market stands today. That perspective continues to guide our investments and strategic priorities as the energy landscape evolves.

Q 3. As India accelerates its energy transition, what opportunities do you see for renewable energy developers in supporting the country’s sustainability and energy security goals?

India’s energy transition presents one of the most significant opportunities globally. As the country pursues rapid economic growth, industrial expansion and digital transformation, the demand for reliable, affordable and sustainable energy will continue to rise, creating substantial opportunities for renewable energy developers.

The opportunity today extends far beyond adding renewable energy capacity. Developers are increasingly becoming partners in strengthening energy security by delivering integrated energy solutions that enhance reliability, support grid stability and reduce dependence on imported fuels.

We are also witnessing new demand drivers emerge from manufacturing, digital infrastructure and data centres. These sectors require large volumes of clean electricity delivered consistently and competitively. Renewable energy developers that can combine scale, technology and execution excellence will play a critical role in supporting India’s sustainability goals while strengthening the country’s long-term energy resilience and energy security.

Q 4. Hindustan Power is actively expanding into solar-plus-storage solutions. How do you see battery energy storage transforming the renewable energy landscape in India?

Battery energy storage is set to become one of the defining technologies of India’s energy transition. Over the past decade, the focus was largely on adding renewable generation capacity. The future of the energy transition will be defined by aligning clean energy availability with consumer demand and usage patterns.

In many ways, storage is becoming the bridge between renewable energy generation and grid reliability. As renewable penetration increases, storage will play a critical role in balancing supply and demand, supporting grid stability and enabling round-the-clock clean power. It will also help cut down curtailment, manage peak demand and accelerate the adoption of renewable power on demand.

At Hindustan Power, we see storage as a strategic growth area and a key enabler of the future electricity system. As of 2025, we had expanded our battery storage portfolio to more than 750 MWh across multiple states, including projects with SECI, SJVN and BSPGCL. These investments reflect our belief that solar-plus-storage will increasingly become the preferred model for delivering reliable, flexible and scalable clean energy in India.

Q 5. The company operates across renewable and transitional energy businesses. How do you balance reliability, affordability, and sustainability while planning future projects?

Energy transition is often discussed in terms of sustainability, but long-term success will also be defined by reliability and affordability. These three objectives are interconnected and cannot be pursued in isolation.

Our planning approach is guided by a simple principle: every energy system must be able to provide dependable power at competitive costs while progressively reducing its environmental footprint. This requires a balanced portfolio approach that combines renewable energy growth with technologies and infrastructure capable of supporting grid stability.

As India’s power demand continues to grow, the transition must support economic development, industrial competitiveness and energy security. We therefore view renewable energy, energy storage and enabling infrastructure as complementary elements of an integrated energy ecosystem that can deliver sustainable, reliable and affordable power at scale.

About Ratul Puri:-

Ratul Puri is the Chairman of Hindustan Power, an integrated power generation company with a strong presence in renewable and transitional energy generation.

Ratul Puri and Hindustan Power’s 435 MWp Lalitpur Solar Project

Uttar Pradesh is steadily expanding its solar energy ecosystem as the state works to make better use of its significant renewable energy potential. Invest UP estimates that the state has nearly 23 GW of solar potential, while installed solar capacity has reached 2,632 MW. Along with utility-scale projects, Uttar Pradesh is also promoting rooftop solar systems and distributed generation to create a more diversified clean energy network.

The growth of solar power is becoming visible across different segments of the market. During the second quarter of 2026, Uttar Pradesh ranked among India’s top three states for rooftop solar additions, accounting for 18% of total quarterly installations. According to Mercom India, the state also recorded a 23% year-on-year rise in rooftop solar capacity between Q2 2025 and Q2 2026, showing the increasing adoption of solar energy.

Against this backdrop, Hindustan Power’s solar project in Lalitpur has reached a significant milestone. The project was awarded through competitive bidding in 2025 and has now achieved financial closure after the Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA) sanctioned ₹1,135 crore in debt financing.

The project is also backed by a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL), providing a long-term offtake arrangement for the electricity generated by the project. With financing secured and construction already underway, the Lalitpur project is progressing according to its planned execution timeline.

For Ratul Puri, Chairman of Hindustan Power, the Lalitpur development represents an important opportunity within a state where solar power is becoming an increasingly important part of the electricity mix.

“The 435 MWp solar project in Uttar Pradesh marks an important milestone in our renewable energy expansion,” Ratul Puri said.

He further noted that Uttar Pradesh is seeing growing energy demand along with an increasing focus on renewable energy, adding that projects of this scale can contribute to strengthening the state’s clean energy capacity.

The scale of the Lalitpur project is another important aspect of its development. With a capacity of 435 MWp, it is among the larger solar installations being developed in Uttar Pradesh. Located in Lalitpur, the project is part of the wider Bundelkhand region, which is increasingly developing as a hub for utility-scale solar projects. Uttar Pradesh’s solar policy has also encouraged solar parks and large renewable energy projects, supported by transmission infrastructure for the evacuation of generated electricity.

Building renewable energy capacity requires more than the installation of solar panels. Financing, transmission connectivity, long-term power purchase agreements, and timely execution all need to progress together. The Lalitpur project brings these elements together through IREDA-backed financing, its PPA with UPPCL, and ongoing construction activities.

For Hindustan Power, the project forms part of a broader strategy to expand its renewable and transitional energy portfolio. The company continues to develop large-scale power infrastructure while maintaining a presence across different segments of India’s changing electricity sector.

The policy environment in Uttar Pradesh is also supporting this expansion. Under the Solar Energy Policy 2022, the state has set a target of developing 22,000 MW of solar capacity by 2026–27. This includes 14,000 MW through utility-scale projects and solar parks, along with further growth in rooftop and distributed solar generation.

Within this policy and market environment, the Lalitpur project represents a tangible step in Uttar Pradesh’s renewable energy journey. Having moved beyond the award stage, the project has secured financing and entered the execution phase, bringing it closer to becoming operational renewable energy capacity.

Ratul Puri Chairman said the project also reflects Hindustan Power’s long-term focus on renewable infrastructure. As India’s power sector continues to evolve, he emphasized the company’s focus on building “reliable, efficient and sustainable generation capacity” while contributing to the country’s long-term energy security.

The Lalitpur project is therefore part of the wider solar transition taking place across Uttar Pradesh. The state is developing an ecosystem that combines utility-scale solar plants, rooftop installations, distributed generation, and supporting infrastructure. Hindustan Power’s project adds another significant asset to this growing network, while its successful financial closure represents an important step toward converting an awarded project into operational renewable energy capacity.

About Ratul Puri:-

Ratul Puri is the Chairman of Hindustan Power, an integrated power generation company with a strong presence in renewable and transitional energy generation.

Ratul Puri on Coal Gasification and India’s Energy Security

This article is authored by Ratul Puri, chairman, Hindustan Power

When discussing the creation of an energy-secure India, the conversation often centres around two contrasting factors. One is the country's traditional dependence on coal, while the other is its ambitious push toward clean, renewable energy. However, for a growing nation of more than 1.4 billion people, a nuanced approach is required to maintain a balance between economic growth and India's global climate commitments.

Solar and wind energy continue to set new growth benchmarks, but another part of the industrial challenge remains. Agriculture, heavy manufacturing, and chemical refineries cannot operate efficiently on solar power alone because these sectors require high-temperature energy. At the same time, many clean energy components are imported, making the country vulnerable to trade disputes, geopolitical developments, and disruptions in global markets.

It is in this context that India's historic coal resources need to be considered. The Union Minister for Coal and Mines recently noted that coal gasification will be important for supporting energy security, reducing imports, and encouraging industrial growth. India has estimated coal reserves of almost 400 billion tonnes, placing it among the countries with the largest reserves globally. Coal continues to have a major role in India's energy generation, accounting for 55% of its energy mix and nearly 74% of electricity generation. In addition, annual coal demand of around one billion tonnes is expected to rise considerably by 2047. At the same time, India continues to make progress toward its net-zero commitment for 2070.

The government is also promoting coal gasification as a method of converting coal into syngas. With total investment exceeding ₹85,000 crore, India has set a target of achieving 100 million tonnes of coal gasification capacity by 2030. Through gasification, coal is converted into syngas, which can be used in the production of cleaner fuels, fertilisers, chemicals, and hydrogen. This approach provides a way to make more efficient use of domestic resources.

With around 83% of crude oil, 50% of natural gas, and more than 90% of fertilisers and methanol being imported, the Central Government has placed energy security among its strategic priorities. According to Ratul Puri, this is where coal gasification can provide a realistic energy transition strategy that addresses the gap between rapid industrial growth and the move toward a low-carbon future. Coal gasification forms part of India's broader effort to make greater use of its substantial coal reserves while strengthening energy security. The coal gasification mission could potentially help save the country ₹60,000 crore to ₹90,000 crore every year through import substitution, while supporting the development of a low-carbon chemicals and fertiliser economy.

Coal gasification transforms solid coal into synthetic gas, or syngas, which consists of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrogen, and methane. The process involves reacting coal at extremely high temperatures with controlled amounts of steam and oxygen instead of completely combusting the coal.

Syngas can also serve as a foundation for several value-added industrial applications. In agriculture, it can be processed into ammonia and subsequently used to manufacture affordable domestic urea fertilisers. In transportation, syngas can be converted into methanol, which can be used for fuel blending and help reduce dependence on imported oil. Gasification can also support domestic production of important chemicals used in products such as paints, plastics, and pharmaceuticals.

Gasification gives India an opportunity to use its abundant coal reserves while reducing foreign exchange outflows associated with imports of natural gas, fertilisers, and chemicals. Producing essential commodities domestically can also help stabilise input costs and strengthen local supply chains against disruptions in international markets.

Although gasification remains a fossil-fuel-based process, it can serve as an ecological bridge when compared with conventional coal combustion. Because gasification takes place inside a controlled and sealed chemical reactor, sulphur, particulate matter, and other byproducts can be captured more easily and efficiently than removing them from the chimneys of traditional power plants.

Gasification also produces concentrated CO₂ streams, making the technology suitable for integration with Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) systems. Captured carbon can either be stored safely deep underground or reused to manufacture commercial products, including solid carbonates and synthetic fuels. Through carbon management and the integration of biomass into gasification reactors, the net carbon footprint associated with heavy industries can potentially be reduced.

Converting coal into value-added industrial products can help protect India's critical manufacturing base while supporting the Make in India mission. For Chairman Ratul Puri, the future role of coal in India extends beyond its traditional function of fuelling power grids. Instead, it can contribute to a self-reliant and diversified industrial ecosystem, supporting India's efforts to remain energy-secure, increasingly competitive, and progressively greener in the global economy.

About Ratul Puri:-

Ratul Puri is the Chairman of Hindustan Power, an integrated power generation company with a strong presence in renewable and transitional energy generation.

Ratul Puri on Integrated Energy Systems and India’s Growing Power Demand

As electricity demand continues to increase, Ratul Puri believes that integrated energy systems will become increasingly important in delivering reliable, affordable, and sustainable power across India.

India’s power sector is undergoing a significant structural transformation. Increasing industrial activity, expanding digital infrastructure, rapid electrification, and rising energy consumption are reshaping the country’s electricity demand. Peak power demand has reached unprecedented levels and is expected to rise further as manufacturing, artificial intelligence, data centres, and electric mobility become increasingly important contributors to economic growth.

The scale of this transformation is already visible in India’s electricity demand. According to the Ministry of Power, the country recorded an all-time peak electricity demand of 256.1 GW on 25 April 2026. This highlights the rapidly expanding scale of India’s power requirements and the need for infrastructure that can support continued economic growth. This development reinforces Ratul Puri’s view that India needs an energy system capable of delivering dependable electricity on a much larger scale.

According to Ratul Puri, Indian businessman and Chairman of Hindustan Power, these developments are changing the priorities of India’s energy transition. While renewable energy capacity will continue to grow, increasing attention is being placed on developing integrated and resilient energy infrastructure that can deliver reliable electricity whenever it is needed.

The first phase of India’s clean energy transition demonstrated the country’s ability to expand renewable energy deployment at scale. The next phase will depend on how effectively renewable generation can be integrated with storage, transmission, and grid infrastructure to create a flexible and future-ready electricity network. As renewable sources contribute a growing share of power generation, reliable electricity delivery will become increasingly important alongside continued capacity expansion.

India is moving into what can be described as an “era of electricity”, with manufacturing, digital infrastructure, artificial intelligence, and electric mobility generating a new wave of demand for dependable and uninterrupted power. Industrial expansion, digital services, electric vehicles, and AI-driven technologies require electricity networks that are more reliable, adaptable, and responsive. This changing demand profile requires an energy ecosystem capable of managing both higher base consumption and increasing peak loads.

This growth is expected to continue over the coming decade. The Central Electricity Authority’s 20th Electric Power Survey projects that India’s peak electricity demand could reach approximately 446 GW by 2034–35, while annual electrical energy requirements may increase to around 3,215 billion units.

Meeting these changing power requirements will require a coordinated approach to infrastructure development. Renewable energy will remain central to India’s long-term energy strategy, but simply adding generation capacity will not be sufficient for a power system facing greater variability and increasingly complex demand patterns. Investment in battery storage, transmission networks, grid flexibility, and intelligent system operations will become increasingly important to ensure that clean electricity can be delivered efficiently across the country.

Battery Energy Storage Systems are becoming an important part of this transition. Storage can help balance electricity supply and demand, strengthen grid stability, and improve the utilisation of renewable generation, thereby increasing the resilience of the broader electricity network. As renewable penetration continues to rise, combining storage with solar and other clean energy technologies will become increasingly relevant for providing dependable and dispatchable electricity.

Hybrid renewable energy projects are also becoming increasingly important as India moves towards more integrated energy solutions. Combining renewable generation with storage can increase operational flexibility and enable electricity to be supplied beyond periods of peak solar production. Such integrated projects can support greater grid stability while helping meet the country’s growing requirement for reliable, round-the-clock clean electricity.

At the same time, India’s energy transition will continue to require a diversified and balanced power mix. Renewable energy is expected to remain the main driver of clean energy expansion, supported by storage and modern transmission infrastructure.

Ratul Puri on AI, Energy Efficiency and Net-Zero Goals

AI increases electricity demand through data centres but can improve grid efficiency, cut emissions, boost innovation, and support net-zero goals.

In almost every industry worldwide, artificial intelligence has become ubiquitous, including the energy sector. However, AI itself needs massive amounts of energy to operate its programmes. The training and deployment of AI models requires large, power-guzzling data centres. Without electricity, AI systems cannot function. Yet, AI could potentially transform the energy industry by facilitating a reliable, affordable and sustainable supply of electricity. Ratul Puri, chairman of Hindustan Power, an integrated power generation company with a strong presence in renewable and transitional energy generation, added that “AI will play an important role in making energy systems more efficient and stable in the coming years.”

Paradoxical Relationship Between Electricity and Data Centres

One must understand this link to leverage the benefits of AI and accelerate the journey towards the net-zero target by 2070 or earlier. To begin with, an AI-centric data centre typically consumes electricity that can run 100,000 homes. However, the largest ones being constructed today will require 20 times this amount. Worldwide, investment in data centres has increased sharply in recent years, driven by the rapid growth of artificial intelligence, cloud computing and digital services. This expansion has raised growing concerns about rising electricity demand and the pressure it places on existing power systems. Data centres are already a significant consumer of global electricity and their share is expected to increase further as AI adoption accelerates across industries. At the same time, this surge in demand is pushing governments and energy companies to rethink how power is generated, distributed and managed in a more efficient and sustainable way.

Despite their power-guzzling nature, AI can revolutionise energy consumption and boost grid performance by enabling more efficient, smarter use of electricity. By 2030, smart grid technology and AI-linked energy efficiency are projected to create almost $1.3 trillion in economic value. Moreover, AI could potentially lower global GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions by 5 to 10%, equal to the EU’s yearly emissions. Ratul Puri, Indian businessman and Chairman of Hindustan Power highlighted that “digital technologies can support large-scale emission reduction when applied across energy systems.”

In this scenario, focusing solely on oosting electricity generation will not work. To deliver the requisite energy that AI needs, policymakers should also consider the infrastructure, which will call for more grid investments, while making the overall electricity ecosystem more efficient and flexible.

Again, it is AI that could help transform the energy industry by helping companies optimise exploration, production, safety and maintenance models. By using AI tools judiciously, a huge quantum of electricity transmission capacity can be freed without erecting even one new line. Given the current shortfalls in the industry, a vibrant partnership between public and private players is necessary to achieve this goal. Apart from infrastructure, this includes the objective of building proper digital skills among energy workers. Ratul Puri further added that “technology and skilled manpower must grow together for the energy sector to become future ready.”

Additionally, innovations are needed in the energy industry to surmount current challenges and come up with novel solutions. Here again, AI can assist in driving accelerated innovations in this space. Interestingly, challenges in energy innovation are precisely the type of problems that AI is adept at solving. For instance, barely 0.01% of next-gen solar PV materials have been produced experimentally. Therefore, an immense set of potential materials is yet to be explored. Using AI, scientists could drastically fast-forward the process of discovering and testing prospective materials, carbon capture molecules and battery chemistry. Of course, proper policies are essential to back AI-driven inventions and accelerate commercialisation, which is usually a bigger hurdle for new products rather than the discovery stage.

Surmounting Barriers to Meet Net-Zero Goals

Since energy is one of the most critical and complex segments worldwide, AI must be leveraged fully to capitalise on its tremendous potential and benefits. Widespread AI adoption will require overcoming hurdles such as a lack of adequately skilled workers. Compared to other sectors, the low prevalence of AI-related skills hinders the energy industry. Meanwhile, a decline in computation costs, along with a rise in technical breakthroughs and data availability, is enhancing the capabilities of AI. Simultaneously, electricity consumption in data centres is poised to rise more than 2X, reaching approximately 945 TWh by 2030. This is somewhat higher than Japan’s current overall electricity consumption.

In the interim, electricity grids are under severe pressure in multiple regions. If such issues are unresolved, about one-fifth of the proposed data centre projects would be delayed. As electricity grids grow more complex, digitalised and decentralised, AI can play a pivotal role in balancing these networks. AI can also boost forecasting and integration of variable renewable energy generation while lowering curtailment and emissions. With AI-based fault detection, companies could swiftly and precisely pinpoint grid faults, ensuring 30-50% lower outage durations. AI-based management and remote sensors could enhance transmission line capacities. If these tools are utilised, almost 175 GW of transmission capacity can be unlocked without a single new line being built.

The overall impact of AI on emissions and climate change will be contingent on how AI applications are launched, their relevant business cases and the incentives available, as well as how swiftly regulatory frameworks keep up with the fast-changing AI landscape. In a nutshell, companies and countries that manage these challenges seamlessly will be better placed to optimise their energy resources and move forward steadily towards net-zero targets and timelines.

Over the years, Ratul Puri has been actively involved in developing large-scale energy infrastructure projects that support India’s growing power requirements and its transition toward cleaner energy sources.

About Ratul Puri:-

Ratul Puri is the Chairman of Hindustan Power, an integrated power generation company with a strong presence in renewable and transitional energy generation.

Ratul Puri on How AI Can Transform the Energy Sector

Artificial intelligence has become an important part of almost every industry, and the energy sector is no exception. At the same time, AI depends heavily on electricity to operate. Training and running AI models requires large data centres that use substantial amounts of power. This creates a close connection between AI and energy. While the growing use of AI is increasing electricity demand, the technology also has the potential to change how energy is produced, distributed and consumed, helping create a more reliable, affordable and sustainable power system.

Ratul Puri, Chairman of Hindustan Power, notes that AI can play an important role in making energy systems more efficient and stable in the years ahead. Understanding the relationship between AI and electricity will therefore be important to making effective use of the technology while supporting India's journey towards its net-zero target of 2070 or earlier.

The rapid growth of AI, cloud computing and digital services has resulted in significant investment in data centres. An AI-focused data centre can use as much electricity as around 100,000 homes, while some of the largest facilities being developed today could require around 20 times that amount. As demand from data centres continues to rise, governments and energy companies will need to look at how electricity can be generated, distributed and managed more efficiently.

At the same time, AI can improve the way energy systems operate. It can support more efficient electricity management, improve grid performance and help companies optimise areas such as exploration, production, safety and maintenance. Digital solutions can also help make better use of existing transmission capacity without always requiring the construction of new lines. According to Ratul Puri, applying these technologies across energy systems could contribute to significant reductions in emissions.

Achieving these benefits will require continued investment in grid infrastructure and greater flexibility across the electricity ecosystem. Energy companies will also need to develop the digital capabilities of their workforce. As Ratul Puri points out, technology and skilled manpower need to develop together if the energy sector is to become better prepared for future requirements.

AI can also contribute to innovation in clean energy. Scientists can use AI to speed up the discovery and testing of new solar photovoltaic materials, carbon capture molecules and battery chemistries. However, moving these discoveries from research to commercially viable solutions will require suitable policies and support that can encourage faster commercialisation.

Several challenges will also need to be addressed. These include a shortage of AI-related skills within the energy sector and the rising electricity requirements of data centres. Their electricity consumption is expected to more than double to approximately 945 TWh by 2030. At the same time, increasingly complex and decentralised electricity grids will require more effective ways to balance and manage power networks.

AI can help address some of these challenges through improved forecasting, greater integration of variable renewable energy and reduced curtailment. AI-based fault detection, remote sensors and digital grid management can further improve the use of transmission capacity and help reduce the duration of outages.

The long-term impact of AI on emissions and the climate will depend on how these applications are implemented, the strength of the business cases behind them, the incentives available and how quickly regulations adapt. Addressing these factors can help countries and companies use energy resources more effectively while continuing to make progress towards their net-zero goals.

About Ratul Puri:-

Ratul Puri is the Chairman of Hindustan Power, an integrated power generation company with a strong presence in renewable and transitional energy generation.
