The rate of HPV caused cancer in Minnesota (age adjusted) is roughly 11.5 per 100,000 in women and 9.3 per 100,000 in men. Nearly 90 percent of sexually active men and 80 percent of sexually active women will get HPV at some point in their life. Roughly 50 percent of HPV infections involve the cancer causing strain of the virus, but most still won’t get cancer. There are roughly one million cases of HPV every year. In 2021, roughly 59 percent of people age 13-15 are vaccinated against HPV.

No test exists for HPV in men because of the difficulty in getting infected cells. Tests do exist for women, though it is important not to get tested too often because the risk of false positives and because most HPV viruses don’t cause cancer and clear up on their own. The test for women is getting a cell sample from the cervix and determining if any have been infected by the HPV virus.

There is no treatment for the virus itself, though there are treatments for the symptoms and also prevention before the virus is ever contracted. The HPV vaccine is almost 100 percent effective against the cancer causing HPV. Though if one does get the cancer causing HPV before cancer develops treatment is possible, and symptoms of HPV like genitals warts can be treatment.

Prevention is the most reliable way to prevent HPV caused cancer. Vaccines release a sort of “dummy” varient of HPV into the bloodstream to create antibodies that know how to react to the real virus. This vaccine only accounts for HPV types 16 and 18 which are the ones that cause cancer, so you could get HPV with the vaccine but you almost definitely won’t get cancer, and the rest of the strains are not harmful. If one contracts HPV (that isn’t the cancer causing strains), they likely wont even develop any symptoms and the body will rid itself of the virus within 2 years. Practicing safe sex is also effective at preventing STD’s such as HPV, though it can spread through skin. Abstinence will of course prevent HPV
