A Collection of Resources to Inspire my Future Writing Students by Mickenzie Westfall

Mission Statement: Welcome to a digital collection of mediums that are able teach writing to students in such a way that is impactful and inspiring. This compilation of video games, books, and templates are examples of resources I found in class materials and throughout my own research and personal experiences, to be most useful for teaching writing. This library is a tool I will use during my future teaching career, in order to demonstrate key writing aspects such as voice, ideas, presentation, conventions, organization, word choice, and sentence fluency. All of which will work together in achieving my own teaching philosophies that everyone can learn and wants to learn, and anyone can become a writer.

Voice in writing allows the reader to connect to the story. When a student has access to reading material with a strong voice, it sets up the student for how they want to include their own voice in their writing. The student can read and then write how they feel and think, explain their perspectives, and convey their message. This gives the student the power to express their personality through their writing and listen to others as well.

Conventions are the guidelines set in place to make sure everyone is able to enjoy reading and writing. By having a standard of punctuation, grammar, spelling, and capitalization, writing becomes translatable for each language. These elements of writing provide a framework of clear communication so writing can be seen, heard, and felt.

This is taken into consideration during the final draft stage to show the reader that you care about the piece you wrote. Great use of margins, illustrations, graphics, font, and legibility are examples of how to present an inviting story.

Word choice is a great leverage for the writer to be able to convey a message so vividly to the reader. Use of specific and intentional vocabulary, formal or informal lingo, can help show expression of a feeling, place, and ideas.

Sentence fluency is another great way to add meaning to writing. How we read writing and how we hear writing can be musical in a way. The rhythm and flow of writing keeps a reader engaged in the story, wanting them to read on. It is important to know how to link ideas together in a piece to keep the attention of the reader and also them them to keep up with the ideas of your message.

This series has so many books about elaborate stories of adventure between Jack and Annie. Lessons include science, history, geography, culture, and humanity. It is perfect for young readers just starting to read chapter books. Chapters are very short and paragraphs are four to five sentences long. The books have a lot of detail but are short enough to where students have enough time to read through the intro, climax, and conclusion.

She learns that what matters most to her is focusing on being the best person on the inside. Junie is known throughout the series to have improper grammar. This is a good example for students who struggle with conventions to be strong willed like Junie and work on being your best self, despite the criticism of others on your work.

Cam uses her photographic memory to help solves mysteries to prove others wrong that girls can be the hero in the story too. This will challenge the writing student's perspective on who character dynamics while creating a story. Young students will generally write about characters similar to themselves. Therefore, this will encourage them to write about characters you don't typically see being in the spotlight.

Max learns the limitations of his wild emotions and about the unconditional love from his mother. The strong emotions we all feel will eventually subside, and we can still love the person for who they are. This book utilizes engaging illustrations from Max's imagination to aid in sentence comprehension for emergent writers. The pictures set the tone for how the sentences are to be read.
