In rural Cumbria, AWAZ has been working for community development since 2005 by providing support for formal/informal community groups and empowering the voice of BME people and communities (including migrant workers, Gypsy and Travellers).

AWAZ Cumbria also provides information, advocacy and support to BAME people in complex and difficult situations by making referrals to appropriate organisations and connecting people and community networks.

There is also the opportunity to become involved in discussing, debating and campaigning at a local, county and regional level on issues affecting young people. We meet the monthly. During Cvd19 we are meeting virtually using Teams on the first Tuesday each month from 6pm to 8pm. SLH is an independent, not-for-profit housing association and is the largest provider of affordable rented housing in South Lakeland, Cumbria. SLH holds the highest grading’s for ‘governance and viability’ from the Regulator of Social Housing (RSH), including via an In-Depth Assessment (IDA) in early 2019.

South Lakes Housing provides good quality homes in one of the most beautiful areas of in the country. The need for quality affordable homes has never been greater, with many working families unable to afford market homes. A rapidly ageing population, fuel poverty and flood prone areas provide the backdrop to our priorities for action.

Our purpose ‘Quality Homes, a platform for life’ has been central to our planning for the future.

We are ambitious about the lasting impact we will have over the next five years and beyond on improving customer experience, their homes, neighbourhoods, energy efficiency, affordability and a new supply of quality homes. Like many social, community-based housing associations we are grappling with the challenges of meeting growing housing need, decarbonising an ageing housing stock, and mitigating against the real risk of future flooding. This, in addition to the core expectations of keeping our homes safe and maintained to a good quality.

Based in Kendal Town Hall, the Town Council employs 8 members of staff to deliver a range of projects and fulfill the Council’s statutory duties.

This website provides an overview of the Town Council’s Committees and Councilors, its Allotment and ‘In Bloom’ commitments and current Partnership Projects.

A community radio services will allow local individuals, education institutes and community groups to contribute to cultural expression and positive community cohesion. Involved participants have the opportunity to engage in a diverse range of roles offered by the station; operation of specialist audio equipment and the day to day running, administration, management and IT related duties to create content that is specifically tailored and informed by community participation. Inviting participation to air viewpoints and interests; to generate debate on music, local issues, news and current affairs through programming of features that will allow and encourage voiced opinions from the wider community.

2.     We make collections of tents, clothes, toiletries, new underwear etc to send to Moria refugee camp in Greece.

3.     We befriend families living in the Furness area who have been resettled as part of the UK Global Resettlement Programme. This involves meeting for coffee and meals, helping them with shopping, English, helping with medical appointments, the DWP and schools etc. We also help with costs for driving lessons and tests.

Our youth club is a safe place for young people to have fun, make friends, learn and embrace and celebrate culture and diversity.

The Youth Zone provides a safe meeting place for young people, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, where they can, for a nominal entrance fee, participate in a wide range of positive activities.
