What is the connection between these moths and natural selection? So natural selection is when the more fitted animals are more likely to live and reproduce, passing on its traits. And the moths adapted to the environment so they can survive, so dark peppered moths were more likely to survive because they could blend in with the trees and the light peppered moths couldn't. Resulting in the population of dark peppered moth increasing and the light peppered moth decreasing. So as the dark peppered moth are more fitted for survival they survived and reproduced, passing on their traits to the next generation.

How did the species get to look the way they do now? The peppered moths turned dark because during the industrial revolution companies used coal, and that coal release smoke. The smoke then covered the nearby tress with black soot, resulting in the trees turning black. And because the moths' population was decreasing because they could not blend in with the trees. They mutated and turned black to be able to blend in with the trees, and to be able to survive and reproduce.
