Graphic Design: Design 'Tricks' 😊

1. NUR FAKHIRA SHARINA BINTI MD SHAFIE (A174902) 05 August 2022

2. For this week, I already entered the zone of design ‘tricks’ where I did learn about the contrast, white space, repetition, sublimation, interlocking elements, tension and movement. The application of those design ‘tricks’ will determine the quality of design. In this course, I had a chance to learn all the element of design ‘tricks’ in details. In addition, each of the explanation will end by a task which make me able to understand about the usage of it in creating a better design. In term of contrast, I did learn on mixing the elements in different form, scales, weight, density color and hue.

Contrast demand an attention in each design. On the other hand, white space is all about minimalization as well as opening things up and inviting viewers. It will determine either our design look simple, attractive or boring. Repetition was define as taking something and repeating it. Repetition was applied when we need to clearly bold or focus a message to the audience. The term ‘sublimation’ applied when the background of our design being blurred. It is used to give a hint about the message to the audience.

Next, interlocking elements means overlapping elements that become one. They work together to give the stability to the composition. For example, the picture of pen and stamp were place side to side to become one evidence. They provide bond to stabilize each other. Tension definitely relatable to movement in which we simply putting movement or life into our work in order to make something happening. This will encourage the audience to feel out of balance, awkward and ill at ease.

I did also learn on how to critique a given picture according to the design ‘tricks’ that I learned. Overall, in this week, I can conclude that the audience should be given an obvious portal into our composition.

3. I felt very eager and happy to learn about those design ‘tricks’. At first, I did heard about some of those tricks before but I barely know them not to mention on how and when to use them. By the end of this week, I am so satisfied to be able to learn all of it. Hoping that I can apply it to my designs accordingly and make it outstanding by times !

4. Decision making is very important in determine the correct choice before starting any action. In this elective posting, I did choose graphic design which requires decision making in every design that I make. The wrong decision may lead to a wrong design and the wrong design may lead to the wrong message. I cannot make any progress without making decisions in this course. Starting from the platform that need to be use to make a design, the message that want to be deliver, typefaces, grid, cropping images, contrast, palettes, and finalizing the design are all need decision making. There’s no wrong time to make a right decision because in graphic design, all the choices and decisions that I make are a reflection of how well I have set and followed my priorities.

5. I am able to manage my time wisely throughout this elective posting journey by making a timetable for every week according to the learning points that had been provided in each week. I usually spent my time in the morning to learn about this course. And its work out ! I am able to finish the course on time for each week.

6. My plan for next week are to revise the best practices that I had learn before and score well in the next rubric training quiz. 😊

1. Hiew Kai Ven (A176984), 07/08/2022

2.This week I have learnt about email advertising where we send a series of information and images regarding a product to a consumer who have subscribed to the website using their email. Besides that, there are also display advertisements that can be used to put more eyes in our business services or products for interested consumer who had a history of searching these relevant information. From all the search advertising, web, social media and email ads, there are always analytics that can be utilised to search ways that can increase conversion towards our goal, increasing engagement and seeing which works and what doesn't. Other than that, I also learnt on what must be done when discovering an international market such as most popular platform used, tax and regulations, have language be translated by a native speaker as well as have local currency be converted to the specific international currency.

After all the lessons learnt, I have completed the final exams and gain a certification for lessons taken from Open University by Google Garage

3. I felt fulfilled and happy that I have learnt various skills regarding digital marketing while completing the final exams that officially certified me for graduating from Google Digital Marketing class. I am also confident that I can apply the skills learnt here in the future

4. I learn and apply the skills when answering topic quiz and final exams. This then allowed me to graduate from the lessons I've gone under Google Digital Marketing class. I can apply these skills in the future if I were ever to start a business and decided I want to have an online presence for my business.

5. I have managed my time properly throughout the EP journey by regularly scheduling the time taken to go through each and every lesson. There were some hiccups in between the journey but there were manageable at worst. So far I am still on schedule and have already completed my class for The Fundamentals of Digital Marketing

6. My plan for the following week would be to take more lessons to supplement further my knowledge in digital marketing that can be implemented in the future

Shape & Colour

1. Arisya Umaira Binti Azaiddin, A171601, 7th August 2022

2. For the third week of my Graphic Design course, we were taught of looking at the different ways we can use shape and colour to form a design. The concept was initially taught by Johannes Itten at the Bauhaus, and later explained to us in this session. The concept focuses on optimising Visual Contrast - black vs white, shallow vs deep, tall vs short, and so on. This eventually creates a perception of movement or depth, and allows the viewer to identify what is being portrayed by the design.

We were also taught of the difference between icons and symbols, where icons are pictorial and have a solid meaning, and symbols are non-pictorial and abstract, such as $ (the dollar sign) used for money. We were also educated on the different colour palettes, and mixing paint patterns. For on-screen, we use RGB (Red Green Blue) and for prints we use CMYK (Cyan Magenta Yellow Key). For graphic designers, every time we open a new canvas on Photoshop or Procreate, we are required to select which colour palette we want to use, and now I finally understand the significance of all these options.

3. Each week, with this week included, after I finish a module, I am in awe at how little we notice of design but our brains are able to capture the whole idea of it. Graphic designers study the effects of design elements on the human brain, and how to utilise the proper tools (colours, shape, depth) to get the desired effect from the viewer. For example, red makes you anxious but colours that are abundant in nature such as blues and greens make you react positively. I have never known this before, but without realising it, my brain reacts that way too. We have been conditioned to believe red equals to stop and danger, and hence we avoid it whereas blue oceans and skies are calm. Due to this realisation, I am able to absorb more of the module and score well in this week's quiz. I think learning about something that leaves you in awe makes it a much more fun and memorable experience.

4. The main points of decision making in graphic design will always be started by the question "What are you trying to convey?" Do you want to make the viewers feel calm, or disturbed, or simply relay a message? I feel like graphic design weighs a lot on communication and psychology as it governs a reaction from the viewer, and after many hours ruminating on how the human brain works, I think that is how we must navigate life. Whenever contacting someone, we should dwell on the purpose of reaching out - is an emoji necessary? What words should I use? Is this tone of voice too stern? And so on. At the essence of it, graphic design is communication. It serves to relay and connect, and is closer to us than we give credit to it. The lessons I've learned throughout this course is not only through the modules, but in how it has shaped me to think, such as what I've shared about decision making in communication.

5. I am happy with my time management for this elective posting. At the end of each week, I look at what I must master in the next week, and I draft out a timetable on when I need to sit down and go over the materials. Apart from Coursera, YouTube is also a treasure trove of information where I research more about the tool I'm using, such as Procreate, and the concepts that were introduced in Coursera. The hardest part would be to master the tool, which is Procreate. It is a powerful application, easy to use but it takes some time to learn - from brushes, to colour palettes, masking, alpha blocking and so many other technical considerations need to be made. However, I'm happy that I still managed to finish the course according to the time set by Coursera.

6. Next week, I will be focusing on composition and utilising the concepts I've used in Week 3, which is about visual contrast.

Digital Art - Week 3

Manjusree Varadharajan, A177119, 7 August 2022

I think I am getting a good hold of Procreate now. For this week, I planned to paint a simple fantasy landscape painting. I managed to learn how to use the masking techniques especially the clipping mask and alpha lock. It is very easy to colour and shade within an object like the mountains and river using the masking techniques and I guess this will be my favourite feature from Procreate. Apart from that, I also learned the how to use the selection tool and the transform tools. Selection tool helps me to pick parts of an image or object such as the flowers and birds and to change it’s colour easily. Transform tool on the other hand helps me to manipulate an object or an image easily. These tools have been handy when it come to the editing part. I also learned a new feature which is warping and distorting an image. This feature helps me to fold, tilt and angle my image according to my likings to assimilate my imagination. It is a great tool to explore.

I am enjoying my course, but as time progresses I realise that this course is very easy to learn but one has to practice a lot to put the creativity in mind on canvas. I am really curious to see what my future paintings would look like in the future provided that I have sufficient practice.

To be honest, I really wanted to paint a fantasy landscape but I just did not know how to start and I lacked inspiration to begin my painting. With some time and patience, after browsing through a myriad of youtube videos and after a thousand trials, I finally found an inspiration and I began to work on it. I truly believe that with patience, I will be able to hop back on track even if my decision isn’t a correct one. I am opinionated that one has to make a lot of mistakes in order to be excellent in a particular field and I guess patience is the tool to help one to keep trying until the success point is met.

Managing my time was truly a hassle as my family has planned lots of outings and it was just quite hard for me to find time to do my artwork. Hence, I spent a most of the daytime with my family members and I spent about an hour to two each day at night to complete my work.

As next week is the final week, I planned to complete the last bits of my course and that includes opacities and blurring techniques, colour adjustments and liquifying and cloning images.

1) Wan Muhammad Ariff, A177120, 7/8/2022

2) For my third week, I was taught the beauty of animated drawing. This is where I learn how to create a consistent drawing for each scenarios in different canvas and compile them side by side, allowing them to actually show the animation of the desired drawing. To be completely honest, there is not much in animation in general from my perspective, however it does require to have master in basic of drawing and painting, allowing us to apply those knowledge into creating an animated picture. It is confusing at first, but once we proceed with it, we get the hang of it. I was also taught on the wonders of 3D Painting, which is actually really complex, and therer is no subtle way to explain it. However, it does shows incredible quality, which some what mirrors a real life object. For example a 3D guitar, looks somewhat exactly like a real life guitar, and there a certain colour arrangement done, such as a base colour, the rough colour and the metallic colour, each provide different volume to the 3D object. There were also different brushes learnt and taught, each brushes has different textures, and also being able to adapt to the size and opacity of each brushes. Surprisingly, each brush have different consistency in their sizes and opacity, so it is a little tricky and time consuming on which to use for the art we want to create. There is also pencil pressure, where by the opacity increases to how much pressure we apply on the tablet. So we have to be careful otherwise, it maybe ruin the volume of the art.

3) All of these Animated Paintings and 3D Art truly shocked me by how tough it is. It provides me a sense of respect to all te digital art creators around the world to be able to illustrate paintings within that universe. Being able to proceed with this course allow me to appreciate the wonders of art and boosting once again my imagination andallowing me to view it from a different perspective. I am quite satisfied with what I have been taught, definitely grateful for it.

4) In complete honesty, it was tough at first, since Imagination is a vital asset in painting. Sadly, I lacked them at first. However, through the course I went through, my advisor told me to always use reference when painting and there is nothing wrong with it. Following her advice as well as surfing through countless youtube videos on digital arts. My imagination slowly comes up allowing me to have these view and image of it, which allows me to display it on a canvas. It took me awhile to accept the fact I have to use a reference, because I wanted to be able to paint without relying on it. Luckily, I matured and appreciate on the decision I made, allowing me to make further progress on the elective posting.

5) Since I am conducting my Elective Posting at home, I am constantly exposed to my family, and friends. Therefore, a tendancy for an outing is usually there. However, it did not stop me from proceeding with the course. I make sure that, each day I spend 1 to 3 hours on the course and painting.

6) Next Week is my last week, therefore I would like to complete my course by watching the demonstration art from my advisor. At the same time, I would also like to continue my paintings.

1. Wan Abdul Aziz Bin Wan Azhar, A173171, 7 August 2022

2. For 3rd Week, I learned about web scraping that stand for techniques involving automating the gathering of data from websites such as downloading images or information. Besides, I also learned rules of web scraping and basic HTML and CSS. The instructor also teach step by step on grabbing tittle, class and image. For this practice, we mostly used wikipedia website as our resource because of easy accessibility. For web scrapping it's a bit tricky because lot of advance coding to deal with. However, I managed to understand better by code-along with instructor.

Next, I also learned of how to use python to work with image. It including upload image from desktop or download from internet. For this part, it was easier to understand from web scraping because simpler steps and codes required. By the end of 3rd week, I managed finished around 80% of the course.

3. I had few breakdown when dealing with the codes especially during web scraping. However, after a few breaks and relearn I managed to understand about it better. Code-along session with the instructor helps me check and analyse any mistakes in my code.

4. Decision making skills are necessary in coding especially problem solving. Throughout my elective posting, I apply the skills especially during assessment and homework. After understanding the task, I need to decide the steps in order to complete the task. I must arranged the code in order so that no error and not jumble up after running it. Besides, choosing a correct function and code also important to make it readable.

5. I arranged my schedule to spend around 3-4 hours daily learning the course including watch the lecture and practice.

6. My plan for the last week is to finish up the remaining lecture which are advanced python module and get the certificate. Also prepare for video and final report.

1) Chan Tze Xin, A174638, 7th of August 2022z

2) Can’t believe I’ve finished the third week of elective posting now! This week I was able to finish 2 weeks of lessons comprising 4 grammars which I find them not that hard as compared to the previous grammars. However, I did not took that for granted and still focused when the teachers were explaning on them and also jot down notes for easier understanding. Whenever I encounter phrases that I don’t understand, I would always search for translation or further clarification on Youtube which they are really helpful. I tried making few sentences on my own with the grammars learnt throughout this week which I find it fun and interesting!

3) I am very happy that whenever I am able to answer the exercises prepared correctly and also score the quizzes at the end of the lessons. I am also amazed how I am able to finish the lessons within the period of time as I’ve started working this week despite being tired after work. I can’t wait till the day I’ll be visiting Korea so that I can communicate with local people in some daily conversations!

4) Before deciding on what am I going to do for Elective Posting, I actually asked opinions from my friends to see what they are choosing and also what I should choose to do. Most of them chose language learning which I wanted to initially but I don’t want to waste this opportunity and decided to choose Graphic Design in the beginning as that’s something that literally very new to me. However, due to some circumstances, I had to change it to Korean Language learning which that’s something I have the most passion in! Other than that, I’ve decided to come up with a time table in order to divide the lessons evenly throughout the 1 month of period provided for this elective posting. This is to avoid procrastination so that I am able to complete the tasks given on time. I think these are some of the experiences that I’ve gone through in applying the skill decision making throughout the elective posting. I’ve also started planning out the final project that we are asked to hand in at the end of the elective postinf so that I won’t be rushing to have it done as I’ll eventually be busier in the future.

5) As mentioned above, I’ve come up with a time table in order for me to follow the tasks arranged in the time table so that I am able to complete the lessons in the time given. Moreover, I’ve been constantly telling myself not to procrastinate too much these days which I’ll switch on my laptop right away whenever the thought of learning Korean Language comes across my mind. This really helps a lot as I am able to complete the lessons in a day which there are 7 videos required for us to view plus 2 exercises and 1 quiz to be answered.

6) I will continue what I’ve been doing for the past 3 weeks which includes writing notes, searchhing for videos and might be watching few drama clips which the grammars were used in the sentences. Other than that, I’ll be coming up with a brief idea on how the final project would be. I hope that everything can be carried out smoothly and I really do enjoy this entire elective posting!

Third Week of Procreate: Solid Foundations

1. Maryam Wafiyah Bt Mohd Adam, A174970, 7/8/2022

2. This week, I continue with the course "Procreate: Solid Foundations". The topic for this week focus deeply about theories. I learnt about brushes like the shape, grain, taper and render settings, about blocking in artwork, layer masks and gesture control. Leaning these theories requires focus because technically, it's more boring compared to practicals. However, it brings drastic effects to our artwork by combining all this small but important details that we learned.

I also learnt about creating animations by exploring more features in procreate. I finished 2 animations and 1 anime portrait for this week.

3. My thought is that this week will be a bit boring because there will be a lot of theories. Nevertheless, I learn so much from 1 session that makes me feels like "wow, this is so cooolll" and makes me want to learn more. Also, this my first time making animation. Even though it's a very simple and short animation, I'm so proud that I can do things that I couldn't one week ago.

4. I learn that every small decisions leaves a very big impact on how your drawings are portrayed. If I choose a different reference photo, uses a different brush, select on a different colour, paint on different layers and uses different features, it will not turn out to be exactly how it is in the end.
By going through different brushes for example, we have to choose, which one fits best for the texture or thickness of what we want. If I am hesitant which one to choose, I may loose the motivation to continue, because the options are limitless. From this, my decision making skills are applied so that my artwork can be finished.

5. For time management, I choose to be flexible, so that I do not feel pressured. To draw, we need to let creativity flow by enjoying every process, step by step. For the learning videos, after listening for 15 mins, I take a five to ten minutes break, then continue again, so that I could listen attentively, without having to repeat it twice.
For my drawings, I take my time drawing to enjoy the new features that I'm exploring. Overall, it's been magnificent.

6. For next week, I plan to finish the remainder of the course which focuses on painting 3D objects and to receive my certificate of completion. I'm looking forward to learn more new things.

3rd week of App Development

1. Jazebelle Faith Childs, A178492, 7th August 2022

2. So far, I have created 4 applications and completed nearly all of the lessons provided in Coursera. One of the applications (DrawingApp) that I have created this week is attached above. The application is just a simple drawing application where you can choose if you want to draw a filled circle, a hollow circle, or just scribble randomly. In the application, you can also change size of your "brush". I also created a simple notebook application. I will be finishing all of the lessons next week as it is the final week of my elective posting. I have improved so much throughout the weeks, and I am getting more familiarised with the programming in MIT App Inventor. This has helped me become more confident in making an application.

3. I feel like I am getting used to all the programming that is needed to create a simple application. Through all the lessons provided, I am understanding more on how to create an application, step by step. I have the same feelings like last week, where I get confused as I do not know how to start making the application, but the Coursera course was really helpful and they taught me step by step through the lessons.

4. On my elective posting journey, I decided to pick this course which is on application development or “App” development. This is because applications nowadays are almost the most important thing for any device. For example, our smartphones rely on numerous applications that were created by numerous application developers, to help us with our daily lives such as banking applications, e-hailing applications, social media applications etc. Learning application development has taught me more about decision-making as you need to decide what kind of application that you would want to create.

5. The course can be a bit challenging to finish if you are not consistent. Therefore, knowing human nature of procrastination which also exists within me, I created a schedule to spend at least 2 hours a day studying the materials given by Coursera. However, I do not set a specific time in the day to study the materials, as I wanted to give myself more flexibility in learning the course so that I can enjoy learning it more.

6. My plan for next week is to create my final application of the course which is the Lost & Found project, as well as to take my final exam which consists of 3 parts.

Third Week of Procreate Digital Art

1) Chua Qi Shen (A176206), 8/8/2022

2) So far I have learned almost every features from procreate app. The brush studios, transformation tools, animation assist and selection tools are all cool stuffs and come in handy for digital artist! Currently I am exploring animation and hopefully I can make some cartoon from it.

3) I am very happy and I get more satisfactions as I complete another new piece of art work!

4) As you can see art is not all about following the instructors exactly the same way. I have my own decision and my preference to make my artwork the other way round and suits my style. A lot of time, I decide to draw my artwork in a different way even though the instructor taught another way. This makes me able to make my own decision, and also improve my creativity when drawing and probably these skills can be utilized later in my career as a doctor which requires lots of decision making.

5) I have made a timetable with weekly goals to accomplish. Along with the course structure which already split into 4 weeks of tasks, this greatly helps me manage my time efficiently and constantly put up with new artworks.

6) My plan for week 4 is to make more animations some might be stationary type of animations some might be more action type.
