This is an extract from a TV series 'Sex Education' that represents a scene with two male teenagers who understand that they have some feelings to each other and start kissing. This refers to the concept of naturalization which was described in the first chapter of "Media and Society" Burton G.

1) Naturalization is the process of representation some norms and beliefs as natural in the media text.

Some evidence to support: there are more than 10 thousand of likes under the video which is in sharp contrast to 673 dislikes.

If we look at so called 'material context' (in which media texts are seen as a part of larger texts) of this episode, we will see that it is an episode from the TV series 'Sex Education'. This series cultivates some sort of norms of behaviour which fits the next theory:
2) Cultivation theory George Gerbner
Pervasiveness of similar episodes cultivates these ideas. This influence on the audience is exerted through emphasising and attracring audience's attentions to the problems of LGBTQ+ community.

Firstly, it supports a theory discussed in the class. Secondly it fits in some of the points of mediation & construction and representation of the ideas discussed while class:

2 guys in the episode are disputing and fighting, harming each other. This can be interpreted as a symbol that both of them resist to own feelings (they fight, the oppose, they resit). Finally, they understand it and start kissing. At the moment when they kiss we can observe an audio code: romantic, soft music, sounds of their breath (symbolizes an intimate scene).

One more symbol is that how these two guys are represented. If you watch the series, you will see that one of them identifies himself with gays, he is sure about his preferences. This guy is represented from a low angle shot: camera is below him. Thus. he is represented as a strong character (at least in this very scene). The second guy suffers from crisis of identity: he doesn't like girls but also doesn't want to accept that is a gay. He is represented from a high angle shot (the camera is set above him), that implies he is a weak character (at least in this very episode he is weak).

A short-term effect involves acquiring and triggering effects, such as mood change, recall attitude and emotions: the audience can suddenly become happy or sad because of flood of memories.
The long-term effect of the video is related to altering: the attitude of a person (he/she will start to be more thankful and attentive to his/her mother, help her with some activities); the emotional conditions of a person (he/she will start to appreciate everything the mother does and feel happy overtime he will notice it); the physiological aspects (after watching the video a person can start to cry, because the clip will touch upon his sensitivity and boost sincere emotions and heartbeat).

It represents the phenomenon of film as a media text and visual codes that can be implemented in the film. In this scene one can see the emotional impact that the military situation during the Vietnam war in the US troops had on the hero. We see how he is freaking out not able to resist the influence of military atmosphere.

I believe it supports the claims discussed in the class. For instance, the emotions on the face of the main hero in the scene, his intensity. Moreover, the camera angle is rather high which is typical for Kubrick's movies. He was trying to make a representation of a real aggressiveness of a person.

It may be a good idea to ask persons who haven't seen the film which visual codes they noticed, why do they think the hero has done that to him, which emotions they have noticed on his face and so on. More than that, one can ask the audience what mood of the American society can be illustrated through that scene.

The video illustrates such media phenomenon as crowdsourcing. Specifically, it shows the case of #WhiteCupChallenge, initiated by Starbucks in 2014. This internet challenge allowed every consumer to create their own design of plastic cups by drawing everything they wanted and submitting it to social media with hashtag #WhiteCupChallenge. Ultimately, the images of the winners are used on the limited edition reusable cup. Thus, media users become prosumers.

It definitely supports claims that we have discussed in previous classes. According to the work of A. Toffler, which we have covered recently, crowdsourcing leads to emergence of prosumers. And this empowers people to create, share and produce their own media products. That is exactly what we can see in this video.

What impact do you think the media has had in promoting this campaign?
3. In your opinion, what opportunity did the participants of this campaign get? (maybe an opportunity to come up with something new or reproduce smth?)
4. have you ever taken part in such actions?
5. what other similar challenges do you know?
