Did you know that when kids read over the year they are more likely to leap ahead in their academic attainments? This is often called the “reading leap,” and our school has made it a priority to keep our students’ skills sharp by encouraging them to read all year long.

            This program aims at getting our Students to read more often at home, which can benefit all areas of their linguistic development, including: reading comprehension, spelling, vocabulary, grammar in use. 

 

 

1. Students record their daily home reads in the Reading Log (stuck/stapled in the Interactive Notebook) and ask their Parents/Guardians to sign the reads. Home readers, age appropriate library books and any other reading resources can be included (e.g. comics, magazines). 

2. Students need 5 home reads signed by their Parents/Guardians to start the Challenge. Maximum one read per day can be recorded, as the challenge is to encourage consistent home reading over a longer period, not a quick completion.

3. Teacher marks the start in the Reading Log and pins Student’s name to the start sheet on the board.

4. Having completed another set of 5 home reads, Student moves up in the Challenge (the same procedure: 5 signed reads, Teacher marks the next step in the Log and moves Student up).

5. Only Teacher can move Students’ names up in the Challenge.

6. Students caught moving any names on the board get disqualified. 

7. Students who complete the Challenge by December 10^th are presented with a certificate. 

8. This Reading Challenge focuses on capital cities of English speaking countries (cross curricular).
