American Modernism is the cultural movement addressing contemporary topics like race, gender and human development. This movement lasted from the 1900's until the early 1940's. Modernism was known to be self-conscious and intended to break the traditional style of literature. During this time period, the US had been better materially than it had ever been. Americans began to doubt what they believed and became disillusioned.

The Stream of Consciousness was originally proposed by psychologist William James as a person's conscious thoughts and feelings towards events in a continuous flow. It was adapted into Modernism as a literary style that, similarly, presents a character's thoughts and feelings as a continuous flow, uninterrupted by dialogue. It characterized Modernism because of how authors wrote their stories. Their novels consisted of how events were depicted in their personal experience without the interference of impartial descriptions or conversation.
