The cat again is symbolizing Zeena trying to get in the way of their relationship. Mattie and Ethan were close to holding hands and the cat did this to stop what was going on. Zeena states that she hid the dish and she never used it but it was the most important thing to her, which in reality means that Mattie took Ethan away from Zeena.
