Face it, most of us do not like being/teaching physically apart from our students and our students want (whether they admit or not) to be in person as well. We are ALL social creatures. I think we as a society get so desensitized by all the “social” media/apps that we all lose sight of what’s really important---especially as an educator---to make those connections in some shape or form with students. In my VC, I plan to use whole group and breakout Zooms (so we can SEE each other’s faces) a time to check the pulse of my students and let them see that they are not alone in what/how they feel. I look forward to hearing their thoughts about online classes, what’s going on in their lives, their successes and their struggles. Using this Restorative Circle approach in Zoom in a break out room will allow my kiddos to get to know each other better and offer their peers that support and comradery in a less intimidating small group. After small breakout groups I will bring them back s one group and ask kids to share their thoughts to the whole group.  ( I use to have in my actual classroom a “Temp Check Thursday” where kids put on a sticky note how they felt about the week, academic or not as they left class that day. I used this to see where I can do better or help kids get to the right resources.

We see a name we can’t pronounce…we assume they don’t speak any English at all. We see Spanish last names and feel kids won’t care about the subject (in my case, US History) because culturally it’s not necessarily their family’s, WE see a quiet kid and think, “Great…this kid won’t participate vocally/socially with others, they are just gonna fail”. We see a large kid come in to the class after eating a bunch of junk food for lunch they brought from home and think man, poor food choices. We hear how a child speaks and assume they don’t know much. ALL these are examples I either had in the past or have heard teachers comment to me in my past 2 years’ worth of teaching. I can tell you this… OUR BIASES REALLY DO AFFECT OUR KIDDOS TO A GREAT EXTENT. We gotta put aside our biases and get to know our students and have students get to know each other. Build that classroom community to avoid at all costs bias and erase it.
