Active Learning by Kristen Lowder

“Based on what we know through brain research, learning has to be organized in such a way that students build on the existing schema to create new neural pathways. Pathways are only built if the brain has the opportunity to “wrestle” with new information--to figure out how the new fits with the old. This “wrestling” is best accomplished when we ask the students to work actively with new information--they have to think, talk, write, read, and ask questions. When students are passive recipients of information, there is very little cognitive wrestling and critical thinking, and therefore, very little long-term learning--new pathways are unlikely to be formed.”

Students may voice that they prefer passive methods of learning because they are "easier", but if they more actively engage in the material, they are definitely more likely to retain that material.

I agree that active engagement is key. I know it is hard to motivate students to do work when things get hard and they do not understand it. I feel like we need to be teaching them the skills to work through the struggles and actually think about their learning.
