Early in Athens kings ruled the city-state but later on a group of rich landowners, or aristocrats took power. Athens, the city of democracy was born, began with a different kind of government. Oligarchy is a government in which only a few people have power. The Aristocrats were the richest men in town and they ran the city's economy. They dominated Athenian society and served as it's generals and judges. Common people had little to say in the government.

Draco was an evil man that made horrible rules. In 600 BC a group of rebels tried to overthrow the aristocrats and they failed, so possibly due to that Draco created a new set of laws for Athens. These laws was very harsh. For example, Draco's laws made minor crimes such as loitering punishable by death.

Draco's laws were too strict so in the 590's BC Solon created a set of laws that were much less harsh and gave more rights to non aristocrats. For this reason all free men living in Athens became citizens(people who had the right to participate in government). The work and effort weren't enough for the Athenians so they were ready to end the rule of the aristocracy.

The Athenians still weren't pleased with the rules of the aristocrats so a noble man named Pisistratus or tyrant (a leader who holds power though the youth of force but today it means harsh) overthrew the oligarchy and became ruler of Athens. Tyrants had strong armies so it caused them to stay in power and plus the people who supported them. Pisistratus was better than Draco and very good person. He brought peace and prosperity to the city, he began new policies meant to unify the city, and created new festivals and built temples and monuments. During his rule many improvements were made in Athens. After Pisistratus died his son took over as tyrant. As his son was supposed to follow his dad steps he did a pore job. Many aristocrats lost power and the Athens were attacked. Later on the tyrants lost power and turned to the Athens.
