As an important fact, Simón Bolívar passed away in a hacienda of Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino that at that time was to the outskirts of the city, 17 of December of 1830. It was founded in 1572 under the name Villa de Santa María de Leyva and recognized as a national monument in 1954.4 It is characterized by its colonial style architecture and its varied rural landscapes ranging from the páramo area with its births and reservoirs of water to the desert zone. Also outstanding is its huge main square, paved (area of 1.4 ha) that is flanked by old colonial buildings.
