For my ideas I have two ideas at the moment: One is a documentary about the band and what they have been doing following them around as they set up for their Final Project

My other idea is doing something I have wanted to do for a while, a massive gameshow which has no main idea but sounds like it could be good as I have seen people like me do a gameshow and would be able to look at theirs and see if there's anything I can improve from there and see what it's like. I am planning to mind map those ideas soon and see what I can do with them. I have now decided that a gameshow is the idea I want to go with because it's something that is fun and I feel Live TV production is my strong suit on this course alongside being something I can do well with setting up.

So for my idea, I want to do something like the chase which is why it is called the sprint. I want it to be where you start in the first box and then have to begin slowly moving forward until the first one makes it there. I want the questions to be music based since its something my contestants will know a lot about. The plan is to have four contestants. A moving main camera that will have closeups of the contestants as they answer questions and a wide camera of the contestants along with a presenter cam with myself as the presenter. I also want to have one shotgun microphone as a backup for the entire set and then Lavaliere microphones for everyone on set so that I have the best audio I can and it will be crisp for my audience to hear. For lighting, I want to have different colours for the different sectors that the contestants will move into as it will add a bit more life to my set in my opinion and give a lot more colour to my set.

For my inspiration, I have been inspired by The Chase an independent game show done by a YouTuber. I am inspired by these because The Chase has a good look to the show with enough lighting and a diverse set of lighting. I also picked the you tubers gameshow because it is a perfect example of what graphics could look good, what lighting and microphones work well in the studio and backdrops that could work well for my set all on a low budget which is something I am going to be working on.

Presentation of my idea

For the presentation of my idea I am going to make a shot list and a story board hopefully both of these can be used effectively to show how I want to portray my idea and how I want my idea to be shown. With this, I also want to get some coloured gel that I would be able to use to make the lights much more colourful and create the zones that will be used in the game show. I also want to use close-ups with one camera that will be operated by a camera operator and make it so the shots can look as crisp and as clean as possible in my project. For the start, I am going to have my contestants lined up and then go across them as they introduce themselves. I also want to try and make an intro and find some sound effects I can use for the project that could help with it. I am also on the fence about trying to make an advertisement for it but I know I do have time limits that may make this less feasible to do. I am hoping to use the audience reception theory to my advantage in this as I want to give a message through the questions and the message is that anyone can answer the questions and it will allow me to build an active audience who are answering the question as my contestants are answering the questions.

Advertisement - I have decided I am going to add an advertisement and I am going to do a Snickers advert that will be baked into the project being a homage to the first project I did and I am going to focus on the band as a homage to my music video since I will have myself playing the guitar and it sounding horrible and then have the drummer say it sounds crap, your not you when you are hungry have snickers, I eat the snickers and then the actual guitarist says better and starts playing properly before cutting to your, not you when your hungry, snickers. I think this is a good idea because with this I am also able to incorporate one of the ideas I had originally had for my FMP and I had in my mind map so this is the best of both worlds. I have picked the Snickers advertisement because it also fits into my age group as they would be the people to want this sweet type of chocolate so the advertisement will fit in with my work and advertise to the right audience. This advertisement I would also hope that the audience will build a personal relationship with the people in the ad through their funniness and this will make them want the same product that these people have.

Introduction

For my intro, I want to present it as a very fast-paced introduction having the graphics move across the screen as the sprint name comes into place and is ready to go. I think I am going to use blue and white in the intro as I do not want the intro to be too dark or it won't fit with the rest of the project. I want the production to be very fast-paced since if it fast paced my audience will stay interested and I will be able to keep a good hold of their attention. I want to hold their attention in the intro because if it gets them interested I will use audience reception Theory making them into an active audience throughout the project which will all start with the introduction.

I have decided to create a rough idea of when I am going to film and how it's going to work which should give me a rough timetable of where I need to be

Week 1 (Project Proposal Plan)

This week I decided that I was going to really narrow down my idea and a title for my project so I decided to go with the title The Sprint as a play on the chase that sounds very similar but still shows that there is some sort of difference and while trying to narrow down my idea I decided to make a mind map that would help me during this time while I was narrowing everything down. This was important because this mind map helped me work out a clear direction and therefore was very useful for my project.

Week 2 (Project Proposal)

This week I think it went well since I have got my proposal done which I think looks good. The only thing I think I might change about it is that I want to try and cut down how many words I have to make sure I am not over any word limits. I have also managed to begin working on my research for my idea which puts me a week ahead allowing me more time for more research which I feel I will need because I think if I use research into different shows it will make my work look much better as I can incorporate different aspects of different shows. This is important because as a part of this, I had too find out my target audience which was useful as I knew who I was trying to cater my project to.

Week 3 (begin research for my idea)

Now this was a week to begin research but I got a much better opportunity that I think will pay off in the long run. I was able to go to Birmingham City University, where I managed to do some recording and make a live TV show there where I was a vision mixer the first time around which has further proved why I should not use vision mixing and it's too small of a project for it. I was also a presenter which has now given me some tips for my projects as I was given some tips to show a little bit more personality while presenting and don't just focus on what's in front of me and not be afraid to look around. This was all very important for my project because of how many tips it gave me for my project.

Week 4

This week I have developed my evidence by looking at some Live productions which have been partly useful as I have seen some work with stinger transitions that I may decide to use in my work and some scripting techniques that will help my work. Some of it was not useful because I think I had started to look at the wrong sort of Live TV having dived quite heavily into live TV using a vision mixer which I am not planning to use at any point so it might have made more sense to not look into that part of this sort of TV production so next time I will try not to focus on that. I have also decided to begin to work on other little bits of pre-production and do a test shoot on Thursday which will allow me to see what my camera shots look like in person and how everything looks in my work and what I else I need to work on before the actual filming.

Week 5 (Pre Production)

This week I have continued to work on pre-production this week having finished my script, call sheet and risk assessments along with a storyboard meaning I will be able to shoot my advertisement during the next week, have a week off for easter and then come back to begin filming my TV production which I have booked in with my actors for when it needs to be filmed. This was important work because my risk assessment helped make sure that what I wanted to do on set was actually attainable and would still be good enough to keep my actors safe.

Week 6 (Filming)

This week I flimed my production for my project. This could have gone better but it was not terrible . I used a microphone connecter to record the contestant's audio which was useful since the contestant's audio was very concise. What was not useful was that I forgot to make sure the audio connectors were on for the video meaning the microphones did not work. Although my planning saved me here as I had planned questions for a second backup episode so I recorded that making sure the audio did work and that did go well. I also lost my cameraman which was bad but I recovered by moving the cameras myself and using one of the camera microphones as my microphone since we could not get another wireless microphone. Overall this was good and the chaos was not too hard to control but good enough that it added the humour that I wanted which was useful as I think that is the humour my target audience would like

Week 7 (Filming)

This week I will film my advertisements plus some voiceovers which I can use in my work to cover up any little bits I cannot use and fade us into the ad break. I have managed to now make some transitions and the introduction to my game show which is good because I am ready to add them to my project which should look good. These were very important to my project and I have had some others look at them and get their opinion to see what they think about the colours and what they think about the logo and everyone seems to agree with the blue colour scheme that I have decided to go with.

Week 8 (Editing)

During this week I finished my edit I was not able to do my advertisement and is something I will reflect on as I feel it was not realistic to try and make both in the ten-week timescale that I had. I did finish my editing for my first project though and with that done I want to get feedback from my peers about it.

Week 9 (Evaluation)

After getting feedback from my peers I have decided that I am going to reshoot as although I think I like my project idea and concept I feel that the execution was poor and mainly the way it was shot and the audio was not up to the standard I would want them for the project. In this reshoot, I am going to move around several things having the contestants stand still answering the questions so I can minimize the movement of the camera. I also brought the number of contestants down from 4 to 2 meaning that first of all I could still be in shot and the microphones were much simpler to set up meaning I could have clear audio that made sense which was another criticism I had from critics when I showed them the video. Overall this is now going to be the worst music gameshow ever as considering neither of my contestants was able to answer any questions which was a problem I had to overcome in the shoot by giving them extra points in the final question I think this will work and importantly my target audience will appreciate the production quality and the funniness of that they are both terrible at answering the questions.

Week 10 (Evaluation)

Here in my final week, I finished my editing doing some graphics and titles which made my work look a little bit nicer and then also doing some colour grading and adding some intro music which really helped my project and really gave my project the pop that it needed in the end. I also sorted out my evaluation which looks good meaning I feel I am finished with my project.

This opening has shown me some things I can do in my video and my production. First, they show advertisements and a small animation for what is coming next which could be something I could use and put into my video. They also then have an advertisement for a product which if I have the time, I may make something small and funny that I could add to my project. Then we move into the intro where the presenter gives a small sample of what is about to happen and cuts into a fast-paced intro of two black silhouettes chasing one another on a red background leading to the name of the show. This intro is brilliant because it is snappy and immediately catches people's attention. The only issue I see with it is that I feel, especially for my project, I do not want to have a brief overview before the opening credits roll as it feels very forced and should not need to be there.

Pitch reaction notes

I have pitched to a member of my class now and he has given me some notes of what is wrong and what I should change, this was that it is a good idea but for my pitch, I need to explain my idea a bit more and explain whether it's scripted or not and why I have picked the audience I have. I have now also pitched this for the final time and this pitch went very well I was told I need to have a crew for this as it will be a big project and this is good to know so I do get more camera operators. I was also told I need to try and shove some bits of banter in the show to try and make it funny which I will try to do.

Notes from the pitch for Primary Research:

Pitch 04.03.24. Gavin, you want to create a quiz show using the TV studio. This ambitious project will require a lot of planning and crew, and you need to ensure the kit, rooms and actors are all booked. You are basing “The Sprint” on “The Chase” and intend to be the quiz master yourself. We discussed the importance of lighting and a variety of camera angles, as well as a script to ensure you maintain a comedic aspect. You have evidenced an Action plan and showed shot ideas for existing game shows in your pitch. Your target will be young adults and will be music-based. You need to ensure your actors are reliable, and that you film enough footage for editing and continuity. This is an ambitious project, Gavin, and I am looking forward to seeing the final show.

So I think I have been given some good information from this and will try and incorporate a time limit for the game show after reading this so I can keep with the continuity and have enough footage filmed to fill the 15 minutes with an intro attached. I was also told that "The issues I see with this are making sure everybody is there when they need to be there and making sure the camera is set up and capturing the reaction shot being set up and that you do not have to capture after the fact". This is a quote I will take with me and was very useful to me because I do need to make sure I have all of my contestants here on time and I will have all of my cameras set up and ready to get any shots I need even if they need some cropping after the fact.

Since I have never presented I thought it would be a good idea to do some research into presenting by using a website made by BCU and finding out some tips. This is meant for live TV but it should still work for my project since I am filming it in one take. The main tip is that on set before filming I will need a detailed running order, not like a script but just rough notes of what will be happening. It also said I should take timing into account and that "Timing is everything with live programming"(Birmingham City University, n.d.). This will be something I will need to take into account and will be very cautious with my timing. I am also going to try and make a rough script for myself when presenting which I can have on my phone so I keep myself on track and do not start to go off topic. Overall this article has given me a lot of help and I will use this as some tips.

This is a good insight into one of these productions' work again in a live format and shows the scale that some of these shows are at when recording. Now this scale is massive but being able to see their shots I have a brief idea of what I can take of them, first of all, I have decided to take a look at their vision mixing room where I realized how quiet everything was and the art of a vision mixer, with a vision mixer I would be able to make the entire project and almost edit live which would be a good idea in theory as it would cut down a large chunk of the editing time I would need to take. The only issue with this is since I am the host if I wanted to do vision mixing I would need a new host. I also see over both teams, the vision mixing team and the host team they have so many notes that they know exactly what they can say and bits of research that they will be able to use. This was good as although again, it was live television it still applies to my work and has shown me how people prepare to film massive TV productions.

This is live TV for a technical Director which is good and will be useful as I know on set things may go wrong sorting out cameras and working with their shots so I hope this will give me some sort of insight. This shows more on the effects and the visual side of everything, showing what is called a stinger transition, which is the logo in the middle of the screen and then moving from the logo into a new piece of media. Thanks to this I have seen how visual mixing works and I do not think this would be a good idea for my work this is not something I should use and just stick to editing in post-production

Now this I feel is more on the scale that I need and will be very useful for my work going forward. Now right after watching the video, this is a much bigger quality but it shows all of the roles and will definitely help because this shows how scripted a show that is shot like this is and how much they have to keep to a script even counting themselves into the second. This is good because it means everyone is keeping to the exact same time and everyone is going at the exact same time meaning there will be no gaps in the video as they are swapping to videos added in like VCR. Now I do not plan to use VCRs which are pre-recorded videos in my production except for my advertisement and since my work is pre-recorded I should be able to just slot it in as an ad break but this is good to see so I can see how much I need to keep my timing in place. Looking at their shots they also have one shot for both the presenters and one shot for one of the presenters which is something I think I can include as 2 of the shots for my recording but instead, it's a shot of the presenter and then one shot of the other contestants.

First of all, For my Target Audience, I am mostly focusing on young adults because I think they are the people most likely to be watching this due to the type of music I am planning to use, and it will be the music they will remember listening to. I think the comedy aspect of the music that is going to be used will also be taken as something that will entice a younger audience therefore will allow me to outstretch to two different target audiences. This affects the design of my project because of this I am going to use coloured lights as I hope this will keep the audience entertained because there is always something moving. I think this is a good target audience because it is one I have worked a lot with and I think I know what I need to include for my project as a lot of my friends are in this target audience. The age gap I will be trying to target will be late teens to young adults so 17- 25 as that is the main that would have listened to this sort of music

This advertisement is the type of Snickers ad I want to do and that I think looks good as it shows someone in this case Mr bean, who is very out of place in this scene. Him being told he is hungry and needs a Snickers and then transforms into a samurai being able to use his moves to escape the situation he has put himself into. The main thing I want to use is the outro as the show the "You're not you where your hungry" on a scroll so I want to show it with a background of the guitar and I think this is a good idea because it keeps my audience in the world of the advertisement and will make the young adults watching keep thinking about it as my target audience would be the sort of people to like this chocolate bar.

In this book, I found I have mainly begun to look at game shows where The Chase is referenced which is good as it's my inspiration and shows I am looking in the right place. It says that "the mood of the time and the politics of the moment influence the style of the presenter and the tone of the show" (Brown and Duthie, 2016). This is something that I had not thought of focusing on before but actually makes a lot of sense and maybe something I attempt to incorporate into my show. The only issue with this is that my target audience, who are much younger than the target audience of most of the shows included in this, do not really care about politics and therefore it may not be useful to include this.

‌

This book it is useful for me because it goes into the difference between Live and Tape production and says that "the advantages of seeing it live are arguable" (Millerson, 2016). It also then goes into talking about how restrictive live TV is for the production team and that some can still be engrossed by a taped production. This is good as it shows that I will still be able to I will still be able to interest my target audience even if the show is not live and I will use that to my advantage as I can also use quick editing tricks meaning that I can use those effects as other ways to interest my audience as fast-paced cuts are something my target audience enjoys because it makes things interesting.
