This article by Linda Baumgarten explains that in the 18th century even corsets were worn by young women even in girlhood. Without wearing a corset in a public setting a woman would have been seen as one who was not properly dressed and even further, a loose woman. This was discussed in the discussion A Look at the Beauty Ideal powerpoint which pointed out that an hour-glass body was achieved by wearing the corset.
