As early as 1834, Pateros has been raising and selling duck and maintaining a fishing industry. However, since the duck raising industry declined after the Pasig River, which is connected to the Pateros River too polluted around the 1970s or 1980s.
</sup>

Vendors continues to sell balut in Pateros, taking advantage of the association of the food item to the town with duck eggs supplied from neighboring provinces in the Calabarzon region. While the duck raising industry in the town is now minimal, the local government is encouraging the growth of the balut industry. It gives tax exemptions to balut vendors in the town. As of 2017, the local government is encouraging the growth of other industries in Pateros such as business process outsourcing although the town's size, 1.76 square kilometers (0.68 sq mi), remains a hindrance.

According to the town's 2005 classification report. 3.13% of its land area is classified as commercial, 0.39% industrial, and 0.88% agricultural.

Pateros on Poverty

A 2019 Article states that Pateros is one of the least poor provinces/city during the first semester of year 2019 along with Las Pinas, Makati, Muntinlupa, Paranaque, Pasay City, and Taguig with a percentage of 3.8%. However, during 1960's to 2000 the agricultural activities in Pateros had decreased by 73% while industrialization increased from zero manufacturing to 227 units, commerce and trade from 100 units in the 1960s to 1,120 units by 2000, and the entry of a total 55 commercial banking and peoples based credit organizations according to a study. This phenomenon had wreaked havoc on the ecology of the town, as well as adversely affecting the endogenous way of life of the local people. There is a total of around 1 million duck eggs produced yearly in Pateros and around 70% of these are processed into "balut" or duck egg embryo. Balut, as a local industry, is able to radiate the system of interdependence between ecology and anthropology of Pateros. This industry has been the lifeblood of the mainstream economic system in this town, rivers-snaill gatherers-duck raisers and balut makers.

Government officials take a step in allowing the locals to use industrial ways to produce baluts in order to easily make more of it, earn more profit and lift up the economy from poverty. Today, Pateros has become part of the 3.8% of the least poor in the country. But the downside of this step is that the cool and beautiful rivers have died. Green lands are replaced by the entry of subdivisions and industrial plants. The rows of bamboos beside the riverbanks are now replaced by the towers of high tension wires and cell sites. This has created the imbalances between the system of economic capital vis-a-vis natural and cultural capital.

Pateros, Paradise Lost in Economic Globalization (pateros-philippines.com)
