Born September 13, 1860 in Laclede Missouri (Gabel, Willbanks, 2010).

Accepted an appointment to the United States Military Academy in 1882 (Gabel, Willbanks, 2010).

Lead an expedition of nearly 12,000 into Mexico in pursuit of Pancho Villa (History, 2009).

Pershing joined West Point in 1882 and graduated in 1886. After the Ghost Dance war of 1890, Pershing was assigned to the University of Nebraska as chief military instructor and earned a law degree during this time. In 1897 he was appointed as an instructor at West Point. After the Spanish-American war, Pershing led soldiers in the Philippines. He was promoted to bragadier general in 1906. He returned to the Philippines (1906-1913) where he served as commander of the department of Mindanao and governor of Moro Province. He lost his wife and three daughters in 1915 and in 1916 he led an expedition to Mexico to pursue Poncho Villa. In 1917, he was appointed commander of the American Expeditionary Force. Congress made him General of the Armies of the United States and was U.S. Army chief of staff from 1921-1924. Pershing was known to be cool under fire. He walked with confidence, gave orders with precision and he was known to lead by example. He was able to clearly communicate his vision. He made a positive impression on Wilson and Baker for his ability to dutifully support policies despite his negative personal feelings towards the policies.
General Pershing refused to fight anyway other than open warfare. He is said to have been slow to comprehend the changes in warfare. He was harsh with his punishments but also respected those who stood up to him respectfully.
