Ted Talks Chimamanda Adichie: The Danger of a single story

The author was trying to explain that different people or places may have a single story. This single story is a basically one definition of this place or person, a stereotype if you will. The author also put out the types of environments you may be exposed to as a child, because at that young age you are vulnerable and easily accept various things as normal and this may affect what you may see in these places or people at a young age and that is what would bring about this single story. She says that a single story shows more differences that similarities in people because in her examples she states that Mexicans are only showed as immigrants or that her roommate instantly felt sorry for her because of the color of her skin all these thing contribute to a single story which break down the togetherness of humanity. Stories, Rumors, Literature are a powerful thing, it is what defines people, but a single story is not what the person is it may only be part, its full story has yet to be told so therefore you must not judge someone by one word or only one thing you have heard about them.

For example in the current world there are various single stories as the entire Muslim community may be seen as a group of violent, terrorists that will attack you if you don’t conform to their ways when it is only one specific group of people from the same religion and or various recruits from different countries who are terrorizing the world.

West Indies Cricket– Fire in Babylon

The West Indies cricket history was a rich topic filled with excitement which actually interested me which was strange because I particularly don’t like cricket because I found it boring but as I looked at the video and learned the history I instantly loved the sport. The West Indies cricket team in the late 1900’s was named a “happy go lucky team” and was called the calypso warriors but this was not in a good way. The West Indies team captain would usually be white but when they got a black captain they were over joyed .There first match against Australia was a frightening, deadly and degrading match, reason being because of their fast bowling which injured and broke some of the players. This was a wake up call for the West Indies Captain as he was under attack and knew some changes would need to be made. The Captain brought fast bowlers into the team which would rip apart the opponent even though they were very young the captain saw talent. As the West Indies beat the Indians with their new technique they would go up against their old masters the English. The English captain said that he would make the West Indies team grovel yet he could not take the fast bowling of the West Indies team and England lost three to zero. A complaint was made because of the fast bowling of the West Indies team, although the Australia’s fast bowling was not a problem at all. Time passed and they would have to face the taunting Australians yet again they were trained to be fit and destroyed the Australians and continued their line of victory. A lot of insults continued the West Indies way about their color and the way they played, but the West Indies continued to prove their worth.

My Reflection on Caribbean Civilization

I have come to grow on the topic of Caribbean Civilization it has been quite the interesting Program and has a lot of controversy and opinions to it because there is no wrong answer in the class for everything in history is linked and hidden and you just have to read and research the deep facts to figure out the who, what, where and why’s. There was a lot of various topics in the tutorials which we went through and had a good time with as we went into groups and presented whatever information we gathered between all of us. We also watched videos and were asked our opinions on it, and obviously everyone had different views and this would start a debate which was enjoyable. We also had a book in which we had to read which was also interesting as I personally could have related to it. My tutorial teacher made sure we understood each topic whether it being a project or a simple topic in which we were going over which made the class more understandable. The only problem with the course really were the lectures which were too confusing and all over the place. I believe the traditional classroom would have been much more effective and efficient as the online lecture also had technical difficulties, other than that I totally appreciated the course and its teachings.

Immigration situation between Hati and Dominican Republic.

The Haitians are apparently outcast in their own country. It is like they are immigrants in their own country since the 20th century. The Dominican War of Independence which signified the beginning of the Haitian immigration to the Dominican Republic because of the scarce land in Haiti. The reason that the Dominican Republic and Haiti separated was because the two countries had drawn blood with each other in the 1937 Parsley Massacre which is widely regarded as a turning point in Haitian Dominican relations. The massacre made the Haitians a long term subversive outsiders. The Dominican‘s put up a boarder against the Haitians. The Dominican government wanted to round up all the Haitians or anyone black for that matter and remove them from the country.
It seems that there is a problem even though they are both a Hispanic country with their papers, and have a right to be there. It is called anti-Haitianism in their county.
