Martin Scorcese states, “cinema was about revelation--aesthetic, emotional and spiritual revelation. It was about characters--the complexity of people and their contradictory and sometimes paradoxical natures. It was about confronting the unexpected on the screen and in the life it dramatized and interpreted, and enlarging the sense of what was possible in the art form.” He goes on to say that Marvel pictures lack a “revelation, mystery or genuine emotional danger. Nothing is at risk.” Based on Scorcese’s definition of art, what makes Casablanca and When Harry Met Sally… an artform with risk? Does Black Panther defy Scorcese’s definition of art or is it just another Marvel picture?

Diegetic sound is the sound that you might logically expect to hear in a film scene, for example, footsteps when someone is walking, dialogue, or a gunshot when a gun is fired. Non-diegetic sound is clearly artificially added to a film – the characters can’t hear it. This could include the musical score. Consider the role of music within the three films (diegetic and nondiegetic). What effect does music have on our understanding of key scenes in Casablanca, When Harry Met Sally..., and Black Panther? Which movie uses sound most effectively? Explain.

T’Challa (Black Panther) is a king, a leader, a mentor, and a reflective spiritual individual. Victor Lazlo (Casablanca) is a rebel but he is also an important man and a leader. Both men have a responsibility to lead and they are both exceptional leaders. What makes both men leaders? Assuming Killmonger lived, did he have the potential to be a good leader or would he have led Wakanda to its demise? Is it more important to be a strong leader when representing a recognized group of people as T’Challa does or is it more important to be a strong leader when fighting for the oppressed as Lazlo does? Explain. T’Challa’s father told him that it is hard for someone who is good to be king? Would Rick Blaine agree? Lazlo? Killmonger?

In the very short Casablanca documentary, one commentator explains that a classic film is a movie that presents a truth that is, “true yesterday, true today, and true tomorrow.” Based on these criteria is Casablanca a classic? Is When Harry met Sally...? Is Black Panther? What truths do these movies present? Why and how do these movies capture audiences of all ages and times?
