One way to prevent contracting smallpox is by surviving it because once a patient is infected, they can no longer get it again. The safest and most effective way to prevent contracting smallpox is by receiving the Smallpox Vaccine. The vaccine is effective in preventing and lessening the severity of smallpox, even if administered after infection. The vaccine is made of a vaccinia virus that is like smallpox but a lot safer. Smallpox has been considered to be eradicated since 1980, so the vaccine is no longer given.

Although everyone had the possibility of contracting the virus, immunocompromised people and pregnant women were said to be more susceptible to the variant forms.
