This task will by analysing 3 different genres of music video of my choice, finding out the following.

The purpose

Extension of income

The videos outlets

CD Sales/ Downloads

Video 1: Rick Ross ft Drake - Aston Martin Music

Genre : Rap

Year : 2010

I chose this music video as the shots and transitions are all very smooth and timely. I believe the purpose of this video is to show the storyline behind the song more clearly and visually to the audience of how they began with nothing and rose to riches. By just listening to the song on its own it does not give as much of an impact as listening while viewing the video that goes with it. The videos edits are also in time with the beat of the song so this makes it more entertaining and flow better. The video also suits the genre of music as it advertises money and fame and all aspects associated with rap music. The videos extension of income i believe is for the artist rather than a record label. Some music video promote films such as another Rap genre song called Earthquake by DJ Fresh which promotes the film Kick Ass 2. usually the artist in this video being Rick Ross usually advertises his record label 'Maybach Music' but this video concentrated more on the artist. Another extension of income this video brings is Music channels, being played on MTV and Kiss. Designer brands are seen in the video as well such as Louis Vuitton and drink brands such as Ciroc which is owned by another rapper in the industry which then again is an extension of income. but the most advertised element to the song and video would be Aston Martin. The song does feature other rappers as guests who appear in the video such as Birdman who appears for seconds, this then promotes his music and gives him more fame. The music videos outlets are MTV, KISS, MTV BASE, Youtube which has gained 38,664,598 views with 101,366 likes and only 4,353 dislikes. Teflon Don, the album that this song was released on was a studio album by Rick Ross, released on July 20, 2010 on Maybach Music Group and Def Jam Recordings. The album debuted number two on the US Billboard top 200 chart, in the first week of sales the album had already downloaded 176,300 copies and ended with 724,000 copies in the US alone

Video 2: Bee Gees - Stayin Alive

Genre : Disco

Year : 1977

I chose this song as it is a very typical 1970's song with the beat and the fashion. It was also a very successful song that is known by millions. although similar in the way that the Bee Gees where 'cool' in there day like Rick Ross in present, they also differ quite a bit the settings as one is made to look glamerous compared to the other which is around derelict buildings. The purpose of the video is to promote the group and give them fame. Not much goes on in the video which gives the impression it is so fans can see the group singing the song. Having the video with song also adds to the enjoyment of the song and the purpose may also be to create a feel good element to it. Typical fashion of the 70's is also shown including flairs and undone shirts which promotes fashion. The extension of income from the video could come from the fashion advertised as it promotes flaired trousers, but it was also the theme tune for the 1977 film Saturday Night Fever which stared John Travolta. The film was released in the same year as the song so therefore the song was very new and fashionable, this was another extension of the income. As well as the song being part of the film, the film brought fame to the song as every time some one thinks of Saturday Night Fever the Bee Gees comes to mind. Bee Gees released the song on the 13th of December that year and was broadcasted on Top of the Pops, the opening credits of Saturday night Fever, Youtube and Radio station Last.fm. Stayin Alive is one of the most successful Disco songs made and in 2010 the song reached the 191 spot on the list of Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. Once released the song went to number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. 4 weeks on and the song still remained in pole position on the 4th February 1978 and became the bands most famous and recognisable songs to date. Recorded in Chateau d'Herouville in France, the song released onto vinyl disc and since has been changed to tape now CD with total amount of 25 million worldwide and topped the US charts for a further 20 weeks giving it a total of 24 weeks at number 1. Stayin Alive had 32,720,457 views on Youtube. Since the Bee Gees have had many albums and rereleases of there songs on CD and has featured on TV adverts such as call 999 with Vinnie Jones which promotes the song and relates to the purpose of the advert.

More Interesting facts include another film being made which used the Bee Gees song title as its name 'Stayin Alive' this was directed by Actor/Director Sylvester Stallone and was a flop with critics but did very well at the box office, with only a $8 million budget it grossed $64 million in return. The studio in France that the Bee Gees recored Stayin Alive in was later found out by the group to have made many porno films there. Again another extension of income was promoting the 1980 film Airplane! which Robert Hays and Julie Hagerty dance to in the bar. another TV promotion would be this song being played on BBC's Sherlock which was often heard as Jim Moriarty's ringtone. The group won a grammy for best arranged voices for Stayin Alive, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ILxjxfB4zNk

Some information found from -

Video 3: Curtis Mayfield - Pusherman

Genre : Soul/Funk

Year : 1972

I chose this song as it is quite unique and tells a story about drugs, the video is made to look quite depressing and unlike modern day rap music drugs are seen to be made glamorous but this video does not portrayed it in that way. The purpose of this video i believe is to give more of an impact to the audience by having visuals and depressing images of drugs and drug users to emphasise more than just what lyrics can say about the negatives of drug use. it also begins with an introduction with a piece to camera which can relate to the audience more and along with the dulness of colour and slow transitions i do believe the purpose is to turn you off of drugs and bring to light the life that some people lead. Extension of income would come from a lot of films playing this song with the most recent being Hangover 2 which ironically has a monkey delivering drugs from one person to another, as well as featuring on the film "Freddie's dead" The outlets of this film include Youtube, Burt Surgeman's The Midnight Special which is a TV program. 'Superfly' Curtis Mayfields album was widely considered one of the best 1970's soul and funk albums, released onto Custom Records in both LP and 8-track formats. The album was distributed around the world including Italy, Germany, France and the United Kingdom with 2- million selling singles. The original Pusherman video only has 77 views on Youtube, this could be due to it being quite old and not easy to find but other versions do have more views.

Task 3: The History of Music Videos. Video 1: The Chordettes - Mr.Sandman (1954)

Mr Sandman released in 1954 was a song by an all female group called the Chordettes. The song has been used most famously in the Halloween franchise starring Donald Pleasance and is one of the main theme tunes. The Chordettes image on the live music video seems to be quite feminine and glamorous, they are all dressed in typical sparkly dresses and all look very smart. There image is much more stylish and posh compared to the fashion of todays videos. They come across as quite friendly as they are constantly smiling throughout the video. Although the video suits its time it seems like a lack of personality in the video as they have the same hair, make up style and dresses but this is the typical 50's look. The imagery overall comes across that they are quite respectable. I like the song myself as it always reminds me of Halloween and like a lot of songs in the 1950's there is a lot of harmonising in there styles, with not an awful lot of music involved but it has an old fashion ring to it with no drums and base it is quite a calming song. The fashion in this video reflects the era as the women dress very respectably and look like they are on a red carpet. They have sparkly long dresses which is the complete opposites of the caps, trainers and mini skirts of today. Image quality is quite poor, the image lags and is pixelated, due to colour film not being around it is also in black and white. Shadows appear on their face due to poor lighting and is a very basic image quality overall. There is a lack of shots throughout the video, it begins as a wide shot of the group as it gradually zooms in on the same face on angle constantly with the group looking directly into camera. There is only one cut in the video and that is to a man who says 'Yes' in the song then it cuts straight back to the front on position of the Chordettes. There is hardly any techniques within the video, this could be due to it being a live recording as it is quite old a music video could not be found although the style of live recording is the same today. Only simple cuts are used, but there is one fade that closes out on to the audience as they clap. There are no special effects in the video due to the time it was made technology had not progressed by this time. some of the styles you can tell are quite old fashioned in this video such as the clothing, the head on view of the performers and the audience/ stage like setting that makes it look like it is in an old fashioned theatre.

Task 3: The History of Music Videos. Video 2: The Beetles - Can't buy me love (1964)

As the decade has moved on Can't buy me love is a more up to beat song by the Beetles which is still in black and white, this is one thing that has not changed, although colour was very close as the same year the film For a Few Dollars More was released in colour. The imagery of this video seems fun and makes you want to dance along. There is a crowd who are also dancing in the background and the atmosphere is a bit more chaotic and rock like compared to the calm image of the Chordettes. The music itself is more up to beet and louder, it is the beginning of Rock music. more instruments are used in this song as well, drums and guitars are being used as well as being used by the singers themselves who compared to some of the videos in the 1950's they just stand on stage with the instrumental in the background. the music is more fast paced as well, but the video is still a live recording as again it seems to be in this style as it is quite old. Fashion has changed for the women but not too much for the men. The men still wear suits but the hair styles have changed from comb overs to mop like cuts, as they seem to be getting a bit more casual looking. The quality of footage has improved slightly but is still a bit blurry, facial expressions and detail are much clearer compared to videos from the 1950's but the video seems to have a light tint to it. The types of shots are much more varied compared to the last video, there are birds eye view shots and shots of the crowd as well, close ups of the singers faces as well as low shots which make the music video more interesting. The style of shots also suit the theme of the song as it is quite loud where as the more subtle Mr. Sandman only has subtle calm shots. The editing is more obvious and sharper but there still only basic edits apart from the spiral effect at the start. There is text edited on and sometimes the scene cuts in time with the beet so it uses the edited to rhythm techniques. No special effects are used in the video as it is still in a pretty basic time compared to modern technology where artists such as will.i.am uses lots of futuristic effects. The style is getting more loose and rocky with more of a rebellious loom to it. The cheesy dancing at one point in the video when the camera is on the Beetles has a man dancing in the background which is quite typical for the time. This song has also been used in an episode of the Simpson's in recent years.

Task 3: The History of Music Videos. Video 3: Roy Ayers - Everybody Loves the Sunshine (1977)

Roy Ayers is an American singer who has many different styles from Jazz to Hip Hop, his 1977 song Sunshine is one of his most known songs and has featured on may films and has been a template for other musicians such as 50 Cent who used his theme tune. The image of this video is very typical of the 70's disco style, it has a disco ball glittering from the ceiling and has a very smooth look to it. It has a gospel element to it as well. The artists image comes across as quite relaxed and cool compared to the Chordettes who were looking posh and the Beetles who were just crazy. He is dancing casually with women around him and the look of the artist and the video looks very relaxed and loose. The fashion trends have changed quite a lot in this video, Roy Ayers has rips in his top and all the clothing is quite colourful and over the top. The 70's was quite a cheesy era with men having their shirts half way undone with their flaired trousers really high and moustaches and sunglasses. The quality of footage is much better from the previous 1960's video and it has progressed into colour with less blurry images and better quality effects such as the shimmers on the disco ball being more cleaner and crisp. Faces are easier to see as well as the lighting not creating shadows. The types of shots have also changed and they seem to be more organised, for example there is a low shot of a man playing the piano and through his arms you can see the glow from the guitar. The shots are also smooth and they have the same shot but in different positions to give variety. The editing techniques are more advanced and used more frequently in this video compared to the last two. Straight away the video starts off with a fade from a blank screen to a mans hands playing the piano, there are many dissolves in the video as well that are prolonged which does not usually happen, a dissolve only usually takes seconds but these last out so you can see two different images clearer than normal at once. The video then ends on a wide shot. Again there are not special effects just an update in techniques with a notiecable style of the 70's being the clothes, disco settings and cross fades.

Task 3: The History of Music Videos. Video 4: Michael Jackson - Billie Jean (1982)

Michael Jacksons Billie Jean starts with quite a mysterious imagery and gives emphasis to the beet of the music. Although colour was an option the video begins in black and white which adds to its thriller type style. I believe the purpose of this video is to give a more mysterious loo and to show you Michael Jacksons dance moves, with just the song alone it is not the same as seeing him dance in time with the beet as this makes it more fun. The artist himself comes across as quite confident and slick as he shows off his dance moves, he also comes across as maybe quite a good actor as he does this in Thriller as well. The music itself is much clearer with a good combination of different instruments, as well as the drum beet becoming much clearer in the music and being the most obvious instrument in the song. The fashion looks quite punk like with leather jackets and leather gloves, with shiny tipped shoes which has not changed much in modern day, with artists such as Justin Timberlake who also is seen with shiny tipped shoes in one of his videos, he also wears a hat similar to Michael Jackson as well so maybe he was his inspiration in music. The shot quality is improving with varied close up shots of body parts and accessories such as shoes. There are also close up shots that build tension and add to the mystery effect when the man at the start has close ups on him as he puts his gloves on and gets ready. Different types of shots include some slow tracking shots and slow close ups on faces. Again not completely clear but the image quality is improving from the 1970's with more detail visible on the face. The editing techniques have improved dramatically from the last video with slow motion being added to emphasise certain scenes, freeze frames on certain moves are used too, as well as a split screen style edit with 3 images on the screen at once. There are some special effects in the video , for example when the homeless man is sitting on the floor he changes into a well dressed clean man in front of your eyes with no cuts, this shows special effects are improving. The style of this video explains the 1980's quite a bit with over the top transitions and edits, this is similar to other films around the same time such as Star Wars and cop dramas.

Its 1997, and new technology has been created, Robbie Williams Angels video i believe was created for the purpose of bringing even more emotion to the audience and this is why i feel it has been left in black and white. Even with the opportunity of crisp colour they still use black and white to give effect that songs in the 50's used. The artist comes across as lonely and upset in the video, he has a calm attitude which differs to previous videos examined as they are either dancing, smiling or playing an instrument throughout. The music itself is also similar to other songs in the 90's with emotional soundtracks and in black and white such as East 17 ' Stay another day'. Fashion again has changed in this video to a long jacket and trousers, it seems to be a bit smarter. The shot quality is also much improved, the images is clearer and there are no blurs and you can see detail clearly. It is also very smooth with lots of tracking shots and birds eye view shots have been used which makes the video look clean and smooth, so there are varied shot types within this video. The shots are more organised and with no shadows where they shouldn't be and the setting suits the music. The editing has calmed down from the 80's with more simple cuts being used and edits in time with the rhythm of the music as well, with no dissolves and just a simple fade at the end as the song closes out. No special effects where used in this video, and the style seems to fit in with the 1990's as they seem to include a few black and white scenes and there are a lot of boy bands.

In concert and live video music videos are basically live recorded, this can be on stage which is taken from a concert or a music festival. Many older videos you will notice have been recorded live as the editing equipment and the techniques that we have today where not available then, so therefore the only way to see a band perform was through a concert or live recording which would be viewed on TV. When these videos are recorded they usually have a live audience in the background. You can tell a video is Live performance or not as they sound is different to the song on the album. The crowd can be heard in the background, the instrumental is not that clear and it can sound like a mess, as well as the performers not having a suitable environment or the equipment to make there voice project more smoothly. This is an example of a live performance by the the alternative/ rap rock group Lincoln Park ft Jay Z, they start by introducing and acknowledging the crowd which would not appear usually on an album version of the song. This video is slightly unique as some recorded footage appears on the screen but is still not of the same quality as a music video as the crowd and background noises are still in the background. But it does also show you some behind the scenes footage of making the video which is different to just seeing the official video, but you can see the contrast between live and recored footage in this video as one is in colour and the other is in black and white and again the video ends with the artist acknowledging the fans with them screaming in the background

Animated music videos are also quite impressive as they take a lot of time and skill with lip sinking, they also tend to be quite colourful videos with neon type lighting, an example of a bright coloured animated video would be Daft Punk - One more time. This style of video is usually what it is, just filmed and then animated. An example of a successful animated music video would Kanye West - Heartless. this particular video was done in the style of rotoscoping where actual people are filmed and then the footage is taken to visual effects studios and every frame of movement at a time which takes a lot of patience and time. This video event features tints in sunglasses and cigarette smoke that has been rotoscoped. Directed by Hype Williams again the video features bright lighting which seems to be a style that animation music videos are following. Compared to the last example of a live concert recording this video has more cuts, a smoother intro and the quality of singing and music is much clearer. The video also contains multi image editing to give it more of an effective look, this could be why animations use lots of lighting and effects to make up for the fact it is not real footage and to keep you interested. Some videos, again Kanye West ft T-Pain - The good life which mixes real footage and rotoscoped animation in one is also quite effective and entertaining as it mixes styles up.

Interpretative style music videos are quite unique as they don't always have a meaning that very clear. These videos will have a meaning but are quite mysterious to the audience in the fact they are watching it but they do not really know what is going on. These videos can feature surreal elements or weird images and story lines that don't make sense to everyone in the same fashion. for example one person may have a different interpretation of the story line compared to what the person next to them thinks, it is a style where there are many different opinions on what is happening and where no one agrees on the same thing throughout. When watching these videos you tend to think what is going on and sometimes when they are finished the meaning behind it still does not appear clear and therefore leaves the audience in a state of confusion giving the the video a mysterious feel. Sometimes the lyrics or the storyline of the song has no relation to the video what so ever. An example of this would be Drake ft Rihanna - Take Care. The video consists of strange camera movement such as really slow zooms on to facial expressions and slow motion scenes that don't necessarily need to be in slow motion. The lighting is also quite strange as you can see the process of it changing as the video plays, were as in other videos the light will change on cuts, this happens as you watch it as in the scene Drakes face becomes darker along with the background. The video makes it an interpretative one as there is a random Bull and Bird within the video which don't seem to have any relation to the lyrics, they are also filmed in slow motion and close up at some points which are very good clear shots that keep you looking but you do not actually know why they are there. Due to it not being clear people will have different ideas instead of agreeing on your run of the mill video. Some people may interpret the meaning of the animals as Drake being the Bull and Rihanna being the timid bird, others may see it as being about there relationship and how they are so different, i.e a bird and Bull. The song also has a strange chorus with unexplained settings. I feel this is a good example.

Narrative videos feature a linear style which tells a story. The video usually relates to the lyrics and the lyrics describe what is happening in the video and vice versa. Narrative videos often have style which makes them look like a film, and they also relate to the reader as they can relate to what is going on in the video with the combination of lyrics and images, which makes the video much easier to follow rather than the previous Drake one for instance. A good narrative feature a beginning, middle and end just like a book so that the story is a s clear as possible to the audience and they know exactly what has happened once it is finished. a good example of a narrative would be Ceelo Green - Forget You which tells the story of his rise from rags to riches. The story begins with him as a kid and how he was not that popular to becoming a teenager and is still looking to go out with the same girl but continues to receive disappointment. He then becomes a young man and tries to send a hot dog to his lover which is then thrown back at him. This is the last straw. The video then progresses on to him becoming a successful millionaire who in the video is labeled as " The Lady Killer" he then drives past the girl he tried to date who is doing the sterio typical failed job of brooming as he pulls up in his car. The lyrics suit the video well as they explain how he feels about being constantly let down, such as 'Forget you' This is a good example as it is quite humorous and you can relate to the video.

Impressionist music videos have a certain style to them that reflects the late 19th and early 20th century. The music and content of the video can seem a bit quirky and weird with a subtle rhythm to the song that usually emphasises a certain genre, mood or a place. As the style of music is in the past, fashion can reflect this as well, they may dress in periodic clothing, clothes that are not quite fit into place. An example of an impressionist music video is Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Dani California. This video has a weird look to it with an often change of costume, it has been filmed on a stage in the style of a live concert video. The video features the band dressed in many different fashions with one that looks like a hippy and one man dresses in 19th century clothing which does not suit the theme of the song what so ever or the lyrics. You tend to see costumes and settings that do not relate to the music in any way and creates an impression of a certain era. The video also features some of the band members with make up on which is not usual for a man to wear, along with wigs and some women's clothing. The video has impressions of different artists throughout such as The Beatles, Prince and Kiss, they seem to be going through time showing different artists showing rock history.

Surrealist music videos are basically fantasy, the video will be surreal as it is using a dream type look to it which could only be seen in the video. For example they will use surreal colours that you would not normally see in real life like a green sky or mythical animals or settings. Most things that happen in the video are made up. These videos can be quite strange but also quite clever in the way they are done. An example of a surreal video would be Florence and the Machine - Say My Name. Straight away from the very start you can see the video is not an ordinary one with a strange futuristic type setting with unusual lighting and clothing. At the start as she begins to sing, some parts echo which gives it they dream feel. The quality of the music is very clear and you can also gather its a dream type video with all these fairies and ballerinas dancing around. The setting looks very made up and unusual along with the haircuts as well. There is an especially dream like part in the video where the artist is standing in amongst crystals on water with to egyptian dressed men beside her, this makes it look like she's a princess and its a fairytale with the strange contrast of an ordinary looking set of buildings in the background which emphasis its not real. The style of music and the instruments use also add to the surrealsim

A pastiche music video is a style that copies another. For example when watching a pastiche music video you may notice that the style imitates the work of another artist, this can be done by the style of video, music or language, the video will more than likely support the style than mock it like some videos. An example of pastiche music video would be Lady Gaga - Alejandro. It was co written and produced by RedOne and inspired by her "Fear of Sex Monster" after receiving good criticism it became evident that the song had a big influence from other artists such as ABBA, Ace of Base and Madonna. This is a good example of a music video has has much influence from other styles portrayed in it. The lyrics and the way the song is sung does sound similar to ABBA and there is also a similarity to Madonna half way through the video wen the artist is dancing in a black and white setting with similar clothes and blonde hair which looks like another Madonna video. The video is quite strange witch does reflect a lot of Lady Gaga videos and her style, with a strange quite eery ending.

A Parody music video is somewhat the opposite to Pastiche, they are also known as spoof, send up or lampoon videos, which do the opposite of taking inspiration from another song, but they mock the artist and there style. These videos are done for entertainment and comedy but sometimes have been done in feuds when musicians have a falling out they may try to get back at the other by mocking them. Films do this quite often with mocks of the successful Paranormal activity and The Hunger Games which is the latest film to be mocked with the new film The Starving Games. An example of a parody music video would be No New Friends, by unknown artists who are mocking the original No New Friends by DJ Khaled, Drake, Rick Ross and Lil Wayne. The group who have have mocked this video each look like the original artist which makes the video more entertaining and they have mocked a few of DJ Khaled videos, not just this one. The video begins with a funny intro which is basically taking the mick out of one of the artist relationships and the way they talk. The song imitates the original in the style completely with exactly the same soundtrack, just with the lyrics changed to insult the artists and make the audience laugh. Props and products in the video have also been removed and replaced by other items which mock the artist. For example the original video features expensive brands of champaign and vodka like Ciroc and Crystal by replacing it with Sprite.

Rap videos do this quite often and an example would be Still DRE by Snoop Dogg and Doctor Dre where another artist is mentioned briefly in the video, this artist being Eminem and his label, is then seen running on the beach for less than 10 seconds. This is an example of referencing as they refer to another artist in a quick fashion but enough for the audience to know and realise who it is. This also gives recognition and fame to the artist they mention.

Referencing is a form of music video that involves a clear description of another artist in the song. This can include the song being dedicated to another person, just mentioning them or literally being about them. Some songs may just briefly reffer to another artist but one song in particular gives a large amount of fame to another artist being Mick Jagger in the song Moves Like Jagger by Maroon 5 and Christina Aguilera which is dedicated to the Rolling Stones rock singer Mick Jagger. The song even begins with a black and white interview with Mick Jagger that took place years ago. His style is copied throughout the video with dance moves and lyrics relating to him and his style with constant flash backs to the Mick Jagger. Fashion of the era when he sung is also shown by dancers in the video with cutting to beat used as well. The whole song is about Mick Jagger and bring him a very large amount of recognition on top of what he already has with 1,466,324 for this video alone. It almost seems as the though the artists singing the song are not seen or mentioned as much as the artist they are talking about. The video then again ends with the conclusion of Mick Jaggers interview as he says " I think we are at least set up for another year" which is ironic as he is still going 40 years later. This could have been added in as the artists were inspired by Mick Jagger.

An example of this would be the Beets advert featuring two dancing twins who are wearing the new Neon Beets. This came from the music video David Geutta - Work Hard Play Hard which featured the same two twins dancing in his song. The new advert has the twins dancing to the same song in the background, this is influence of commercial as the music video and the characters in it have inspired an advert to be made which is selling a product. This will attract people to the product as it is a well known song, this will also promote the song so it works both ways.

Task 2: The Codes and Conventions of Music Videos Lyric interpretation

Lyric interpretation is all about the relation of the music video to the lyrics. Some videos will have a completely different storyline, theme or setting to the lyrics of the song. Lyric interpretation videos will follow the lyrics in a linear type style with the video showing the lyrics and the lyrics explaining the video. An example of this would be Eminem ft Rihanna - Love the way you lie. This video has lyrical interpretation as it follows the story line of the video and relates to the lyrics of the song. The song is about a couples relationship which is portrayed by two actors in the music video, for example when Eminem says fight, the actors begin to fight. The video follows the lyrics of the song and the most noticeable example would be when Rhianna says " Are you just gna stand there and watch me burn" Megan Fox who is the actor in the video is then set on fire and this appears frequently in the video and in time with the lyrics. The song is sung by a man and a women which also relates to the man and women in the video, showing that every aspect of the song is then followed through in the video. The music and the lyrics are cut in time with reactions, such as " sick of looking at his face" Megan fox looks at him and then turns away, this follows the lyrics throughout the song and makes the video look like a story. The song gradually gets to its climax at the end and so does the video by more fire appearing more frequently and on a larger scale. There are no random moments in the video that do not relate to the lyrics and this is why i feel it is a good example of lyric interoretation as it looks like a narration throughout.

These videos have a message and can have a hidden message to them. These videos can plant a message or an idea in the head of the viewer. These videos more or less give you a message from the content of the lyrics rather than in the form of images. These songs have a message in the lyrics which comes across as more of a story with lyrics that are more scripted. These videos usually refer to an event, person , place or myth and for my example i chose JAY Z ft Kanye West - No Church In The Wild. I chose this video as the content of it and the lyrics have a religious element to them. Throughout the video and from the start mythical statues are seen and the whole video is about religion and seems to refer to good and bad with lots of rioting going on within the video witch could relate to politics. The lyrics include " No church in the wild" " Non believers" it has quite a religious element to it and suits the video as it shows how some people and areas are completely out of touch with what's good and bad which could mean theres no church in certain places and theres no belief in god and what's good in certain areas. The video features police fighting against ganges which could resemble good versus evil.

Task 2: The Codes and Conventions of Music Videos Links to other artists

This is where the performing artist in the song/video will refer to another artist in their video. This can be done in many different ways including mentioning there name, mimicking the style of another artists work that is very recognisable and easy for the audience to realise who it is. More ways can include them even featuring the artist in their song which i gave a previous example to of Eminem featuring in Dr. DRE's song D.R.E. Sometimes this can be done in a very brief way or much more frequently like Maroon 5's Moves Like Jagger. Sometimes these videos will even show work from the artist they are referring to. The song i have chose as an example would be Puff Daddy - Every Breath You Take. Originally taken from an older song, Puff Daddy took the instrumental and dedicated this song to his best friend, also famous rapper Notorious B.I.G who died and a fatal shootout. The two had a lot of history together and Puff Daddy signed B.I.G to his record label and made him famous. Since changing his name to P.Diddy, he has made more songs in dedication to B.I.G including Nasty Girl, but the start of Every Breath You Take mentions the dead artists name and tells the story of how they first met and how they became friends. P.Diddy talks about the shooting and the night he lost his friend. The song is very similar to the original Every Breath You Take except the chorus has a female singer. The video makes the song more emotional as there is a group of people which could be a family in white which could resemble notorious B.I.G's funeral with candles lit as well it makes it quite a sad song. The song is completely dedicated to another artist throughout the entire song. The video ends on a fade with an image of B.I.G and his date of birth and death to remember him.

Task 2: Codes and convention of Indie/Rock

Rock music also has noticeable codes and conventions which include the main aspects of Rock music including the video tending to be in black and white to add to the harsh gothic feel. The artist is shown frequently in the video, extreme close ups and dark locations.

The different camera shots in Rock music include close ups of the artists face usually as they are screaming to emphasise intimidation and the feel of the song. Other shots used in Rock music are unusual shots like low shots facing up at to the artist as they play a guitar, these shots are also quite intimidating and look as if they give the artist a sense of authority and looks as if they are above you.

The mise-en-scene in rock music includes a stage behind them quite often or in a festival setting with a live crowd around the performer. They also have settings of streets and skateparks in the videos, the sets and overall look of the music video is generally quite depressing.

The editing in Rock music is very fast paced and erratic. The style of editing in these videos is usually in time with the fast music and the editing can be quite flashy as some rock videos warn you to look away if you are paralytic. Some special effects are also used in the editing process of music videos including make up.

The lighting in Rock music is very dull or features colours that suggest danger or death such as red which keeps in line with the sometimes morbid rock theme, with as i mentioned rock music videos tend to be in black and white.

Sound in this genre is quite in your face. Many different instruments have been used in rock music, but most notable the guitar. The sound is very fast paced, catchy and like hip hop can sound quite similar, this could be due to not having much choice in the different styles and instruments they can use.

The props in rock videos include drums, guitars, stages, generaly mostly instrument related items. The costume is also quite dull with lots of ripps in the clothing with baggy torn jeans and vests. The artists also sometimes have make up in rock videos with black eyes and skull rings and necklaces along with mohawk hair cuts. The colour is dark and dull with no bright colourful images like in pop videos but the complete opposite.

An example i have chosen is Lincoln Park - Numb, as although it is not as morbid as some rock videos it does have the typical aspects of setting and drums. I chose this as the set where the artists are is emphasised as when the video cuts to a girl out doors and at college, the colour is natural, then it cuts back to the artists in a dingy abandoned theatre which shows that this is how rock performers like to be portrayed.

Task 2: Codes and conventions of Hip Hop video

When looking at the codes and conventions of Hip Hop videos it is quite clear that there are a lot of similar elements that appear in most of these styles of video. Hip Hop videos consist of many women that can be half naked dancing around the artists, who are made to look like they are cool and rich throughout. Alcohol is used quite often as well with noticeable drinks such as Crystal, Ciroc, Patrone and Hennessy, these drinks are seen in the videos to promote how expensive they are and to big up there life style. Hip Hop videos tend to have the best, most classy version of everything. Other aspects include lots of money being seen, Jules, designer clothing, close ups of assets and they usually have no story line and mainly follow the artist and genre.

The camera shots in Hip Hop videos are done in certain positions and close ups to emphasise the wealth of the artist such as the camera close on the sparkles of a necklace and many smooth tracking shots of property and settings.

The mise-en-scene in these videos is also well set out, you will usually have the artist closer to the camera with expensive set and women in the background, i believe this is done to emphasise the artist, with the extras and props in the background showing what they own and what they are constantly surrounded by. This contributes a large amount of the atmosphere within the video. The layout is done in an appealing way which attracts the audience and persuades them of how these stars live and can attract some people who want to appear like the artists on the video.

The editing in Hip Hop videos is very efficient, organised and intelligent in these music videos. They usually have very smooth edits that are very in time with the beat of the music and show quick cuts of cars, money and jewellery that looks very crisp and fresh. There are also many fades on Hip Hop music videos that change setting from i.e a mansion to a car driving on the motor way.

The lighting is not always bright it usually tends to stick with more classy, expensive looks such as grey tints, black, white and gold. The lighting is usually dark or natural, it is not often you get lots of flashing images like raves or house music videos for example.

When colour is used it is very vibrant and crisp, for example you will be able to see a good shine on a red Ferrari. The colour in music videos is similar to the lighting, they only use certain looks. The colours used in the videos are classy colours and you will very rarely see greens, pinks or bright cheaper looking colours.

Sound in Hip Hop is very good, obviously there are many drums and base within the instrumental, the music can seem quite rough and harsh and quite to each over. Hip Hop music can be quite eratic and fast paced but it can also be slow paced in certain songs. Some songs have a constant tune that is played repetitively throughout the whole song such as Rick Ross - Hold Me Back.

Props used in this genre of music video consist of cars, boats and other accessories such as flat screen televisions, walk in wardrobes and basically props that reflect a wealthy lifestyle. But the props in some of the videos can influence violence with bandanas, guns, knifes and other gang related items.

Costume as well as the sound is a major aspect in the appearance of the Hip Hop video. Flash clothing is usually seen that is fashionable and usually designer, this is shown quite a lot with even songs named after designer clothing. Baggy jeans, skinny jeans, caps and hoodies are seen often in these videos. Hip Hop has a major influence on fashion with stars such as Kanye West, Drake, Asap Rocky and others. I chose Rick Ross - Diced Pineapples as an example as the editing is very smooth and crisp. The whole video looks visually great with some interesting shots.

Task 2: The Codes and Conventions of Music Videos Extending or consolidating song meanings

These types of videos have a deeper meaning than just listening to the lyrics of the song alone without any images or video. Sometimes the song can be unclear or confusing and a video would need to be with it to explain its meaning more and make it more clearer to the audience. These videos attract the audience more and due to there content that can make you feel more emotional or relate to you can raise your opinion on the song itself. In some cases these videos are more memorable than the song itself. An example of this would be A-ha - Take On Me. The lyrics alone do make some sense but the video explains it in a deeper context. The video shows a young girl reading a comic book and she seems to admire the male character in it, who then magically comes alive in the magazine and reaches a hand out to her, dragging her into the comic book world, this has more of an impact with the song as the music has a slightly make believe feel to it. As they wonder around together they fall in love and become quite close and she returns back to the real world and he does not. This could explain the lyrics " Il be gone" showing he cant be with her forever, it is more emotional to the audience with the video as it is showing you a story that you could only feel if watching the music and video together. In the end of the video he manages to become a real person and the two fall in love, this has more of an impact on the viewer as it is like a love fairy tale type video that has come true with a happy ending. I feel the video really suits the song and makes the song more memorable due to the video.

Task 2: Codes and conventions of Pop video

Pop videos have an opposite look and feel compared to Hip Hop as pop is much more cheerful whereas pop can be very serious, aggressive or depressing. Pop videos can be quite cheesy and contain these main features; Close ups to emphasise the party and cheery mood that these artists portray and the atmosphere it creates. They also have bright colours instead of the dull plain and simple looks of Hip Hop. The personality of the artist is usually clearly seen through the video, for example there attitude and cheerful personality which tends to aim at teenagers, these mainly being girls.

The camera shots in pop video are done sometimes quite cheesy with extreme close ups that show the innocence of the artist and theme of the song. The camera shots are not a smooth as Hip Hop as they reflect the genre of pop, which is quirky and entertaining with jumpy shots.

The mise-en-scene is quite typical of its genre with girly elements to it and cheesy dance moves. An example of a pop star could be Brittany Spears who has made many pop songs which are usually about love or relationships, compared to Hip Hop which is usually about money and ego. The setting can be quite colourful with girly pinks and green and reds. Katy Perry is another example with California Girls, which is a typical pop song aimed at girls, the set in this is very feminine and bright with make believe characters.

The editing in pop videos is also quirky with seamless edits that in California Gurls for example gives it a dream like, make believe feminine feel. These videos can also have the same scene more than once in the video, so the editing can be quite simple and repetitive, the editing can also be quick to keep up with the up to beat music.

The lighting in pop videos is very bright and coloured lighting is also used, it is very rare that you find a dull pop video as it defeats the idea of the genre. Again California Gurls is a good example of lighting as it is bright throughout which can influence the audience attitude towards the video as if it is dull the mood will be too.

The sound will have many different instruments that have a certain tune that allows the audience to join in with, meaning a catchy and memorable tune.

Props in pop videos can include animated models, cars are used in a lot of teen pop videos as well as soft drinks compared to expensive spirits and champaign in Hip Hop/Rap music. Pop props are more general. Costumes in pop videos are much more bright and make believe as well as casual, again California Gurls has a vast amount of bright colours as well as made up clothing such as a bra with two iced buns on it.

Task 3: Techniques, Unit 29 Cutting to beat

Cutting to beat is a technique that can look very well organised and planned out. Cutting to beat is when a certain scene will cut to another in time with the sound of the music. For example if a drum beat occurs every 3 seconds, the video will cut to another scene in with the same time as the drum, this gives good effect and makes the song and music video fit together, flow more smoothly and gives it an efficient look.

I have chose rap video Box Chevy by Rick Ross. Putting aside the explicit lyrics within the song i feel it is quite efficient in its cutting to beat technique. The effect does not happen constantly on the drum beat but it does happen when the base effect happens, this very fast and repetitive and every time this noise occurs the screen flashes and has many fast cuts that are in time with the music. This i feel creates a great effect as if it is done with patience and dead on time, it looks great and especially on one scene where the artist swings his arm across the screen as these fast paced cuts are happening, it looks very smooth and can create an illusion effect. The music videos also has slower cuts that take place when the beet happens as well as dissolves to another scene, but these happen slower and less frequently than the others.

I feel depending on the song and the content involved, it would be a great effect to have and looks more unique than just the typical ordinary cut on a beat. This would be more challenging and i feel the effect of it if executed correctly could make the music video as it would flow very well.

This technique can also make a music video. Effects could be anything from animation to CGI in a video. Effects or any other visual effects.

The video i have chose as an example would be Will.i.am - Feelin Myself. I chose this as visually the video looks great, and i have noticed that this specific artist uses many effects in his videos that look quite futuristic. From the very start the background colour in the video is changing while the artist is still on set. This makes the video more attractive and entertaining and makes the video less bland. Sometimes these effects are not even used for a reason but to give the video life and i feel effects similar to this would be an aspect to consider when making my own video. A the song starts the artist has effects and flashing effects behind him and actually on him. This style gives a base effect and actually appears in time with the beat which is similar to cutting to beat. A broken glass effect is also used in the video which splits the screen and the artist into many different sections. This is also a useful technique as it makes the screen look full of image and could be used on certain scenes like in some videos the artist will kick at the screen and this is when this technique could be used.

Task 3: Techniques, Unit 29 Miming and Lip Sync

Miming and lip sync is very important in a music video as if the lyrics are not in time with the video it can be very annoying and put you off of the video. Lip sync is the artist miming there lyrics on screen, then the actual song will be dubbed over the top of this. This is done as the music will be of a better quality and there are more resources for the song to appear more professional allowing you to use a professional recording studio, other than just recording straight off a film camera.

An example of miming and lip sync would be Azealia Banks - 212 FT Lazy Jay, as this has a very good example of lip sync as the camera is deliberately done in some scenes on an extreme close up which focuses especially on the lip sync which is quite risky and requires a good editor. The video is in time with the music on every lyric and i feel this is a good example as they have taken a risk and given a clear example of lip sync. This could be a god idea to use in my video as it provides the audience with a close up that could be used in scenes that are emotional to have the artist closer to the audience, but close up shots like this video provides shot variation and gives an opportunity to execute great lip sync.

This is when a music video features more than one image on the screen at once. This is sometimes used in rave or rock music type video so get a dizzy effect.

One example would be Will.i.am ft Jennifer Lopez - Go Hard or Go Home where Mick Jagger is seen on the screen with editing that gives the effect that the camera is going at a very fast pace to look as if Will.i.am is in a space ship passing through space and many different images at once of Mick Jagger. In this video the effect makes the artist look quite powerful and suits the fast pace of the camera work and music. This also happens in the same video with Jennifer Lopez, where she can be seen numerous times at once, giving a futuristic effect. Another form of this would be on Flo Riders video - Good Feeling, where in the editing process still multi images appear on the screen at once in a zoom out motion showing different pictures of the artist which then forms into a liv image of the artist in present time. This builds up to a good ending and i feel is a bit different to watch and is clever as you don't expect this to happen. I feel using many images to form one big one would be a useful technique to use in my video. You have to be careful or it can make the video look cheesy,

Camera angle and movement is very important to capture feel within a music video and to make it unique with creative unusual shots. Sometimes you are drawn to a video as the camera work is strange such as slanted angles low angles and so on. Typical camera movement would be following the artist as well as hand held camera movement which without the correct equipment and steady hand can look less professional and obvious as to how you have filmed it. For my example i have chose Kanye West - Mercy as the camera movement is very simple but effective. The whole video is a tracking shot from left to right and gives a similar look to a camera being on automatic on such films like Paranormal Activity 3. I feel this style builds up tension as the artist may disappear off screen and as the camera is not following them the audience does not know where they have gone and you could use this to scare people and build up tension in my video. Mercy is simple with the occasional zoom and zoom out to change the style and make it less bland but due to it being a constant tracking shot it makes the whole video look very smooth and crisp. The video looks as if it going back and forth but i think the set is an illusion as the camera is actually going around in a 360 degree turn, this is a technique i would use to make the presentation look visually impressive.

Task 3: Techniques, Unit 29 Chroma Key

Chroma Key is basically using green screen. Sometimes this maybe done for the reason of not being actually able to have the real thing due to cost or it is unrealistic. Some artists use it on purpose to give a certain style and others actually just perform in front of a blank screen. An example again would be Kanye West featuring Kim Kardashian in the song Bound as the scenery is unreal with made up creatures such as Unicorns. The clouds also look as if they are going to fast. Green screen only works successfully in certain situations and i feel even though that this was a chosen style and was meant to look as it does on purpose, i feel it looks to fake and the artist looks out of context with the background, you can tell that the artist is not actually in the background scene. Sometimes it can create a dream like romantic effect and the fakeness can noticeably be seen when Kim's face is very large in context with the background and looks different to a zoom. The motor bike shows no road or any other features which shows it is just a screen behind them.
