the early part consisted of the bubonic plague or black death, there were wars, medical practices with no basis, literature was banned too, quality of life was also very bad. The church and king were the basically autocratic allies, as they both contributed to false truths, such as basically living only to serve the king and pope and only make them richer, and then basically die with no legacy whatsoever. The church also defied basic science and also believed the earth was the center of the earth and this destroyed learning or anything.

Many held this belief because there was little evidence to prove otherwise in the Western European world. After the Western European Roman Empire rule, feudalism emerged, and the Catholic Church gained power. People were also quite fearful and superstitious about all of life and authority. Advancement of culture, science, and mathematics seemingly halted with the change of power.
