He was born rich, but lost all his family by 13. He joined the French war and got married by 16. Shortly after he joined the colonists for there fight for freedom.

First major combat duty was the  September 1777 Battle of Brandywine. In that battle he got shot in the leg while trying to organize a retreat. When Gorge Washington requested special health care, it started a strong relationship between them.
