I have been working to fight book banning with my work with WPCTE this year (alongside Hannah and Carol). We read School Moms: Parent Activism, Partisan Politics, and the Battle for Public Education by Laura Pappano to learn more about the book banning movement. Next week, we’re going to work with NCTE’s Sarah Miller to write a book rationale to add to the NCTE Book Rationale Database. We are writing a rationale on Heartstopper Volume 1 by Alice Oseman. If you’re not familiar with the book, it is a graphic novel about two boys who fall for each other. It is so heartfelt and so important in so many ways. 

I plan to continue to fight for book access for students. I believe in having a variety of books in my classroom library and advocating for students to read books of their choice in school. 

You wouldn’t think that advocating for reading would be any type of “trouble,” but here we are. And we are needed.
