How does the author indicate a change in one of the characters?

The author indicates change in Marji throughout the book by making changes to the way she looks and what she says. As the book progresses, Margi visibly gets older but also has to start changing the way she dresses because of the war, which is the main source of change in the book. She also changes the way she acts when she starts rebelling against authority figures at home and at school, and forming her own opinions on the war and what is going on in her country. For example, the book says "After the death of Neda Baba-Levy, my life took a new turn. In 1984, I was fourteen and a rebel. Nothing scared me anymore." (Satrapi 143/1) This quote shows how the war has affected and changed the way Marji acts in school and at home.

Which technique seems the most successful and in revealing the turmoil of the changes in the society?

The shading is most successful technique because it shows how dramatic the events are in the story. There is an example of this on page 76 panel 3, this is when Marji is finally seen as an adult and can come to the riots. There is another example of shading on page 153 panel 4, this is when it shows Marji's dad carrying her mother when she fainted. -Adrian

What similarities and differences can you identify between the politics of the Middle East and those in our country?

In the Middle East there is a dress code for women and sometimes men that requires them to wear scarfs and burkas, as well as certain ways they could style their hair. In American we are free to wear whatever we want. In the Middle East it is also sometimes forbidden to speak against the government and rebel but in American we have free speech.
They also have a ban on entertainment such as bored games and parties, whereas we do not. One thing in common is we both have leaders that the people aren't fond of right now, and there are protests and sometimes riots due to that. - Luci Bixler

How is the role of religion in this book similar to that in your own community? How is it different?

Religion in this book is similar to that in my own community because there are many people with different ideas on what they believe in and what they think other people should believe in. For example, in the book it says "... The black curtains are to protect us from our neighbors. Across the street. They're totally devoted to the new regime..." (Satrapi 105/1-2) This shows how, in the book, even the neighbors have very different ideas on their religion, just like in our country there are people with many different religions and ideas who may not agree with each other. It is very different because there is a very large population of people in the book with very radical ideas on how their religion should be practiced and are willing to die for their beliefs. Not only this, but they do not seem to have a separation of church and state as they do in our country, and they make laws about how religion should be practiced. -Sadie Allen
