The Use of Phony in Catcher in Rye

In the novel Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, readers are introduced to a teenage boy named Holden. Holden is an extremely critical character who believes that all the adults around him act fake and the only true innocence is in children. Though he thinks all these things, Holden himself is actually also quite “phony”, he lies to most everyone he meets about almost everything in his life, even about little meaningless things. Holden states many times throughout the novel that he can’t stand phonies, especially all the phony adults in his life and his past schools.

Salinger's Purpose

Salinger uses the theme of being phony to help show Holden’s feeling towards people. He uses it to develop the thought of innocence and staying young and innocent forever. Holden only thinks of adults as being phony. This theme is throughout the entire book and is why Holden makes many of the decisions. He doesn’t care about dropping out of school because he believes everyone there is a phony. Salinger uses this to try and make connection with the reader. He wanted them to be able to relate to wanting to stay young and not wanting to take on tasks of adults because adults are apparently just phonies.

How the theme of phony relates to the novel

One of the biggest ideas or themes in Catcher in the Rye is the topic of “phonies”. This idea is one of the main things that the main character obsesses over until he finds himself going crazy because he thinks everyone is either fake or not good enough for him. Phony is used throughout the novel to show how Holden feels about things and why he feels that way. Holden feels that practically everyone he meets is a phony, including his brother because he became a scriptwriter in Hollywood, and Holden thinks that Hollywood is phony. There are really only three people in the book that Holden says aren’t phony, Jane, Allie, and Phoebe. Allie was Holden’s brother that died and his death was really the turning point for Holden’s mental health.
