Gather materials.

Cut from the green, green-white, and all white sections of one leaf, with a hole puncher. Creating symmetrical leaf chads. Cut 8 chads out of the leaf for every color.

Put leaf chads in a water solution within the syringe, with 5 mL of water and dish soap solution. Pull water solution into the syringe, and then create a vacuum by placing your finger on the tip, and pull down. Swirl to prevent leaf chads from sticking to the sides and bottom of the syringe. This will also pull the trapped air out. Continue this step until all leaf chads sink to the bottom of the syringe.

Do step two with all of the colored leaves (green, green white, and white).

Then, place the leaf chads into cups with 250 mL of sodium bicarbonate, and put a lamp over the top of it facing down. Record the time it takes for half of the leaf chads to rise to the top. Repeat this process with the green-white chads and the white chads. Be sure to swirl the cup.

Record values in a table and make a graph.

When finished, put all materials away.

Conclusion

The scientists stopped the clock at 1560 seconds because the white reflects all color, so then there is no light energy to help make photosynthesis occur within the white leaf chads.. Thus, the results of the experiment suggest that the greener the leaf, the greater the rate of photosynthesis, because the greenest leaf chads had the highest rate of photosynthesis(.00324 sec-1), while the white ones, with no green, had the lowest rate (.00409 sec-1). The green-white chads were in the middle, with a rate of .00156 sec-1.

One possible source of error would be inconsistent leaf color. Inconsistent leaf color throughout each individual chad could cause certain chads with more of one color to under go greater rates of photosynthesis. For example, in the white-green leaf chads, ones with more green would have a higher rate of photosynthesis would have a higher rate of photosynthesis which could make the overall rate be skewed higher than it should be. Another source of error would be the leaf chads sticking to the bottom of the container. Leaf chads sticking to the bottom of the container could prevent the chads from rising. This could cause the time length to be far greater than it should, causing the 1/ET50 to be lower than it should be.
