In our first week of action project (week 2) we learned about the difference between convergent and divergent thinking. By definition convergent thinking is a problem solving approach to an issue that focuses on finding the most logical answer. to find this answer you would need to evaluate various possibilities and apply critical thinking. We used convergent thinking when we were given a sheet with lots of circles. Our task was to find multiple circular items and draw them, this uses convergent thinking as we have to think logically and draw circular things. Divergent thinking on the other hand is when you find a variety of possible creative solutions and focus heavily on the amount of creativity and the correct answer. We learned how to apply divergent thinking by being given the scenario of how many ways to paint an elephant. We used divergent thinking by applying a large variety of creative ideas including making the elephant drink paint, bleach it or skin it. Although the ideas were unorthodox it helped us learn how to expand our realm of thinking instead of just using bland and unoriginal ideas. This can help us later on in our assignments as instead of finding a boring solution we can use our creative and divergent thinking to find a new solution.

week 3- self reflection

During this week we focused on ourselves. In the first lesson of the week we took the VIA test to see our strengths and weaknesses. I found that my top 9 strengths were love, humour, gratitude, forgiveness, appreciation of beauty and excellence, kindness, teamwork, zest and hope. However I learned that my top 9 weaknesses were spirituality, perspective, honesty, bravery, prudence and love of learning. This helped me understand myself a bit more and how to improve myself to be the best person possible. Then after that I took a test about me. To recap some hobbies I have include: gaming, soccer, basketball, eating, sleeping and reading. I know that I am very good at group tasks as I am very good at teamwork. If you look at my capabilities, I am always able to apply all of the 5Cs to my best capability. I am very good at using creative and critical thinking and as I have a background in debating I am very good at collaborating and proving a point through research. By taking action project I hope to improve my collaboration and communication skills even further and work closely with people I trust and know that I will be able to produce the best results with.

week 4

In week 3 we began working on how we could redesign our peers' school experience to make it more enjoyable and fun. My peer was Jet. During our talk to find out what was bothering him I found out that he did not enjoy the early time that school starts. He complained that he would always come to school and feel extremely tired therefore not able to pay attention in class. This would mean that he would not be able to apply himself to the best of his ability and would impact not only him but his peers in any group task that he may have. To solve this problem we helped him plan out a sleep schedule that would help him feel relaxed and full of energy for the day. This would mean not using his phone after certain hours so that his head would not be overexerted whilst he was trying to get to sleep. After trying out this new schedule we realized that it worked very well for him but when Chai tried it, it did not work. This is because we made the schedule to fit Jet and only him, not anyone else. This way it would be tailored to his personal preferences and not to a large group of people.

In week 5, me and Jacob began planning our video idea for the upcoming spinoff project. Our plan was to focus on cyber bullying. Cyber bullying is a problem that we can both relate to, although it has not happened to us personally we are both gamers and in the gaming community this is something that happens very often usually leading to drastic and saddening results. Cyber bullying is something that has been happening for years and although the government has tried to implement ways and courses to enlighten students about how bad and dangerous it is to bully someone online. The problem with this is that the government cannot relate to us as they dont play video games and are not with the times. So our plan was to make a video that is not only informative but relatable towards our target audience. Planning was a long process as there are already so many resources that help with this issue. However after reading through all the articles and websites that we could find we found a common theme. Nearly all the articles and websites were either outdated or did not have a good grasp on what really happens online.

week 6

In week 6 we began our mind map. This was the best way to map out our ideas and really see which direction we headed in. We also began brainstorming with ideas for the app we were going to “make” to promote our anti cyberbullying articles. This was a hard process as we couldn't really make much progress with our ideas. We had a good basis but from there we weren’t sure what to do. We made a mind map and filled it with ideas, basically a brain dump of ideas. This way we could sift through the ideas and pick the best ones to connect together and form an easy to understand script for our video.

week 7

Week 7 we realized we were making close to no progress. It was definitely worrying as the video was due in a week. However as we were getting worried we learnt that Aarnav did not have a group because his partner was sick and would not make it back in time for the due date. We decided to join Aarnav and help him with his project. We went from cyber bullying to solving the overflowing bins issue. The best thing is that Aarnav had already completed his script so we helped him finalize his idea and began the planning to film. We settled on the idea of making it like a statement promoting a new app. Like a press release. We helped him by working on ideas and how to make it engaging and help explain everything.

week 8

Week 8 was when we began our filming process of the video we began by making a name for our product we settled on Dumpmate. A way to helpfully prevent overflowing bins by sending a dump truck to your location between 2-3 days. We then began designing the logo. It needed to have good color so that it would pop. We ended up designing a logo that was simplistic and represented the idea well. We then began filming. We found an empty classroom in the new building that was away from any background noise. We set up the desk so that Aarnav could film. He had his laptop in front of him so that he could easily access the script. We made the video to look like a speech to promote our brand. It was simple and fit perfectly within the 2 minute time frame. It took a couple tries to get it ready but after that we got all the rest in one take. I then took it home and began editing it. I added some quiet background music and some images to add that persuasive touch. I then presented the video to the group to get some feedback. After the feedback was given I made the small tweaks and handed it up

week 9

In our first lesson of week 9 Jet,Chai and I focused on finding something that we were all passionate about. We thought about things that interest us and eventually came up with solving a problem to do with the environment. This was the first lesson that we had been working on the INNOV8. Together we wondered how we could reduce plastic in our chosen environment which was our local community. We came up with a renewable system which basically promoted swapping from cheap plastic for a more sustainable and safer alternative. This way people could understand the damage they were creating in the community.

In week 1 was when we began to really lock in and start brainstorming ideas for the expo. We drafted a lot of different sustainability ideas. we needed to find a way to make it sustainable but that it would be self sufficient. We needed two ideas that represented that. It took a while but we came up with the idea to recycle plastic into items. This would be expensive though and after researching we found that many companies that tried that same idea were not in business anymore. So we had to be careful to explain as to why our product would work compared to the others.

In week 2 we continued creating our pitch. We agreed that we were going to make a product that turned used plastic into everyday items. It was an idea that hasn’t been done before. We needed to create two new ideas that could be differentiated from each other. The first we decided would be everyday items and the second would be things like furniture and other more expensive household items. This way we could see which one was easier and more cost effective.

We have refined our idea further. We named the first one swap 4 sustainability which is an initiative where you give us your single use plastics and in return we give you up to 50% discount on our sustainability kit. The kit includes: a stainless steel water bottle, a metal straw, a straw cleaner, a bamboo toothbrush, a tote bag, wooden utensils and the plastic bag it comes is made of repurposed plastic. The second initiative is plastic 2 purpose. This is an idea where we take plastic and turn it into furniture. That way people can have furniture that is good for the environment and that reduces the amount of plastic that goes to landfill.

Week 4 is when we had the expo this week we had to finish making a 4 min presentation and script that highlighted our 2 ideas. It took a while to make the presentation as we had to make the company logos. But the script was a lot easier to make. This is because we had so many ideas to put together. We just need to link them. We had a lot of good statistics that worked in our favour. We were prepared for any hard questions that could be asked and the presentation went really smoothly as we were able to answer all the questions that were asked.

After we got the results of the pitch we had to make the decision of what idea we were going to use for the expo in 3 weeks. We needed to choose an idea that we could develop and make even better. The furniture idea, while good, was too expensive and it was not likely that we would receive government funding for that idea. So we decided to use the swap 4 sustainability idea. It had a good chance of receiving funding. So we started to add to it to make it more presentable. We started researching the cost of materials to set a price for the sustainability kit.

We began to put our ideas into the scaffold. We needed to respond to prompts such as target audience, funding, material and other prompts. The target audience was people who care for the environment. We decided that what would happen is that people give us the plastic and we in return give them up to 50% on our kit. The kit on its own would cost $30. We then transport the plastic to recycling companies who turn them into things that we can then apply into our kit. We refined our idea further and added statistics that we could implement in the expo.

This is the week before the expo. We needed to start making a plan on how we were going to present swap 4 sustainability. It needed to represent our brand. We also started making our speech. We needed to be able to predict and respond to questions that we knew were going to stump us. A question that we needed to prepare for was if people ask how we are going to receive funding. Luckily we had the idea to receive government funding as we researched that governments are more likely to give funding to sustainability companies. This question was crucial for us to answer because without that answer our entire premise comes apart. Because we have no way to make a profit.

week 8 was the expo. This was the week we had to present our best idea. We agreed as a group to go with swap for sustainability. it was the idea that people bring us single use plastic and we give them discounts on our sustainability kit. We had a lot of people come to our stall. We had some good informative posters that had a brief on our product. We were able to easily answer the questions that everyone asked us. Although compared to the other groups in our room our stall looked a bit bland. Even though we seemed to impress the judge we were not able to make the top 3.
