      O dia 8 de Março é, desde 1975, comemorado pelas Nações Unidas (ONU) como Dia Internacional da Mulher.É comemorado em vários países do mundo, como Albânia, Argélia, Armênia, Azerbaidjão, Bielorrússia, Bósnia e Herzegovina, Brasil, Camarões, China, Cuba, Equador, Geórgia, Itália, Israel, Laos, Cazaquistão, México, Moldávia, Mongólia, Montenegro, Polônia, Romênia, Rússia, Sérvia, Ucrânia, Vietnã e outros.
       No dia 8 de março de 1857, trabalhadores de uma indústria têxtil de Nova Iorque fizerem greve por melhores condições de trabalho e igualdades de direitos trabalhistas para as mulheres. O movimento foi reprimido com violência pela polícia. Em 8 de março de 1908, trabalhadoras do comércio de agulhas de Nova Iorque, fizeram uma manifestação para lembrar o movimento de 1857 e exigir o voto feminino e fim do trabalho infantil. Este movimento também foi reprimido pela polícia.
     No dia 25 de março de 1911, cerca de 145 trabalhadores (maioria mulheres) morreram queimados num incêndio numa fábrica de tecidos em Nova Iorque. As mortes ocorreram em função das precárias condições de segurança no local. Como reação, o fato trágico provocou várias mudanças nas leis trabalhistas e de segurança de trabalho, gerando melhores condições para os trabalhadores norte-americanos.

       On March 8, 1857, workers in a New York textile industry went on strike for better working conditions and equal rights for women. The movement was violently repressed by the police. On March 8, 1908, needleworkers in New York made a rally to recall the 1857 movement and demand the female vote and the end of child labor. This movement was also repressed by the police.
     On March 25, 1911, about 145 workers (mostly women) were burned to death in a fire at a tissue factory in New York. The deaths occurred due to the precarious safety conditions in the area.
