She is a hard-working black woman, who doesn't take peoples bull. Lena aka Mama, has dedicated her life to her children, and cares deeply for them all. She is usually kind, patient, and faithful.

Lena is very family oriented.
“Walter—What you ain’t never understood is that I ain’t got nothing, don’t own nothing, ain’t never really wanted nothing that wasn’t for you. There ain’t nothing as precious to me…There ain’t nothing worth holding on to, money, dreams, nothing else—if it means—if it means it’s going to destroy my boy.” P. 106
Lena states she will put her family before her own needs. She cares so much and tries to implant her values in them.

I sympathize with Lena because we both want what's best for our family. Lenas strengths are thinking things through. Also she is always there for her family, and never lies to them. Lenas weaknesses are not always supporting her kids. When Beneatha talks about God not existing, Lena disapproves and even slaps Beneatha in the face. When Walter wants to open a bar, Lena tries to convince him to keep being a chauffeur, and to not go after his dream.

A Mothers Love by Helen Steiner Rice
"It is patient and forgiving when all others are forsaking. And it never fails or falters even though the heart is breaking..."
Lenas love for her children is patient. Even when others abandon or don't care for her family. She will always be there. She is a rock for the family, grounding them. The quote I used for Post #2 talks about putting her family before her own needs. "even though the heart is breaking..." she loves them always even if she is getting hurt.

The song is from a mothers perspective. She is sings about being there for her son and always willing to help him. "Just remember the weight of your world's Only resting on me" means her sons life will depend on how he is raised. Lena takes so much responsibility for her kids even though they are grown.

Theme : Class / Money
“Son—I come from five generations of people who was slaves and sharecroppers—but ain’t nobody in my family never let nobody pay ‘em no money that was a way of telling us we wasn’t fit to walk the earth. We ain’t never been that poor. We ain’t never been that--dead inside.”
Lenas husband had died, and when she collects his insurance check, everyone has an idea on what to do with it. Even with each person wanting to do their own thing with the money, everyone had the ultimate goal of making the family life better. Another money topic is when Walter is almost bribed to move out of the white neighborhood. When Lena says "We ain’t never been that poor. We ain’t never been that--dead inside” she means no matter how badly money is needed, the family will not be bought out.

Dreams vs. Reality is an important theme in Fences. When Troy reveals he had an affair, he goes on to try and justify it by saying the mistress made him feel good. How he had given up on his dreams and his mistress made him forget about the troubles of reality. Rose is appalled and tells him he isn't the only one with crushed dreams. She has given up all her hopes and dreams and has tried to become the perfect wife. She put his needs above hers and has stood by his side the whole time, without cheating. Both have big dreams they want to go after, but must face reality. Their dreams differ from their realities, though they go and face it anyway.

A Raisin In The Sun & Fences have many similarities, but also some differences. The main characters of A Raisin In The Sun are a family of a married couple, their child, the mother, and a sister.
In Fences, the story centers around a married couple and their kids. Also in A Raisin In The Sun, feminism is a main theme. Feminism isn't in Fences, but adultery is, unlike in A Raisin In The Sun.

Some theme similarities are class, money, injustice, racism, dreams vs reality, and generational differences. Both repeatedly mention money and how hard they work, and how tough life is. In the two plays, the characters talk about how badly treated they are by white people and how they're discriminated against. Generational differences is talked about with how the younger generations have it easier, and the differences in racial problems throughout the decades.
