However, with the Khmer Rouge coming to power in 1975, any form of traditional culture was then banned in order to build a ‘new society’, resulting in as many as 90 per cent of the dance practitioners perishing from disease, overwork, starvation and slaughter. 

After the fall of the Khmer Rouge regime in 1979, dancers, as well as ordinary citizens - mostly women - were the first to take steps towards the revitalisation of the art of dance. It aims to showcase the dancers in scenes recounting tales of good and evil, princes and princesses and mythological battles, in the Khmer classical dance style.

A celebrated sculptor, who was fascinated by one of their performances in Paris, took the train down to Marseilles and spent three days with the dancers.

By the time the troupe left, he had drawn more than 200 portraits. Prince Sisowath Tesso of Cambodia serves as Director of the Royal Cambodian Ballet, and oversees its internationalisation. 

He engages with opera houses in many countries in order to bring the Ballet to new destinations.
