Not many family would of been able to afford this during the 1920’s. So this shows me as the reader that they have enough money to by luxuries. The writer changes focus in the middle of the extract by describing what is happing at the party.

In the beginning we find out that 5 crates of oranges and lemons arrived from a fruiterer in New York. This is giving us an idea of the setting and that this is a wealthy area. Wec know this as receiving 5 crates was seen as getting lucky as they were expensive. 

In the middle we are given a long list of the amount of instruments the place has. "a whole pitful of oboes and trombones and saxophones and violins, and cornets and piccolos and low and high drums"
