What is Transformational Leadership?

According to James MacGregor Burns, transformational leadership is focused on the relationship that the leader fosters in order to inspire others toward increased motivation and higher levels of morality; this often involves having to engage in conflict. Transformational leadership is more concerned with end-values, such as liberty, justice and equity. Transformational leaders must be willing to take risks, form strategic alliances, learn and unlearn their power, and reach beyond a “fear of authority” toward a concrete vision of the work in which oppression, violence and brutality are transformed by a commitment to liberty and the democratic struggle (Shields, 2000).

What is Servant Leadership?

Servant leadership is based on a deep commitment to one's values and emerges from a groundswell of moral authority. One of the responsibilities of servant leadership is to serve those in close proximity by giving a sense of direction to establish an overarching purpose. One way in which a servant leader serves others is by becoming an advocate on their behalf (Sergiovanni, 2000).

Social justice leadership is when a recognized individual takes on the responsibility to disrupt practices that are inherently discriminatory or prejudice in order to define new norms that will improve the lives of others. This form of leadership encompasses
a combination of Transformational and Servant Leadership. I believe the foundation for social justice leadership is love and a deep belief that all men and women were created equal.

Introducing Dr. John Perkins

I chose this video because I've had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Perkins several times, and when you hear about the brutal racism that he experienced as a young adult, it is a miracle that he has become one of today's greatest social justice leaders. He embodies empathy and unconditionally love, which has allowed him to be honest about the bondage and damage racism inflicts on whites as well as bringing restoration to the deprivation that has plagued the black community.

A socially just education requires educational leaders to practice moral outrage at the persistence, if not worsening, of homelessness, hunger and poverty, which are not going away but worsening. It requires educational communities to defend and extend principles of human dignity, community and realization of democratic process, to reinvent a sense of commitment to the public as s social good, and to restructure market models to limited spheres, which improve social relations and conditions of learning (Dantley & Tillman, 2010).

According to Scanlan and Theoharis (2015), socially just schooling is evident when educational opportunities abound for all students and parents, when ambitious goals are held and met by all students, when all students and families are made to feel welcome in the school community, when students are proportionately distributed across all groupings in the school, and when one dimension of identity does not directly correlate with undesirable aspects of schooling.
