Before the 1750’s (The Industrial Revolution) there was relatively no leisure or entertainment for the lower classes of people on the social hierarchy. Only the rich and wealthy had enough time and money to do leisurely things and be entertained. As the Industrial Revolution pressed on people worked longerhours and wanted to spend time socialising after work or on this days off. Pubs started appearing because of this, now people could heather and socialise, drink and eat, play games and listen to music. Law then were passed that limited a workers day hours working, now workers had more free time in the evenings. Better transportation alllowed people to watch sport that were further away and also allowed people to socialise with people that may have been a long way away. This transportation allowed people to go and see various sports such as Boxing, Cricket and Horse races.

Bare fist fighting was found to be illegal under “Assault occasioning actual body harm.” Of course Bare FIst fights didn’t stop immediately, it declined over a period of time. In 1866, The “Marquess of Quensberry” gave his full support to a new set of rules, which were then named after him in his honour. One of the most famous fights of the Industrial revolution was the James J. Corbett vs John L. Sullivan in 1892. James J. Corbett beat John L.

Baseball was a game thought of and invented by a by named “Abnour Doubleday” during the Industrial Revolution. Baseball is a game known as “Americas Pasttime” and is a game of competitiveness and good sportmanship. Baseball took concepts from the English game “rounders” and the sport “Cricket”. The first game documented happened in 1790 in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. During the Industrial Revolution, Baseball was not just a form of entertainment, it was also a hobby for a lot of middle class people. Baseball was directed towards the middle class of people because they had enough time and money to spend watching baseball, lower class people may have either just been able to play it or watch it by just getting by. People of any height or weight could play the game, but there was one unique rule, Three strikes and you’re out. This meant that if you let the ball get past your bat without hitting it that you would be sent off. A famous game from the Industrial Revolution was in 1890, in the World Series with the Brooklyn Bridegrooms going up against the Louisville Colonels, the game ended in a 3-3-1 tie.

Nick Gaver, Austin Marks, Randy Lopez(N/A)
American Industrial Revolution, Baseball
SPorts Revoolution
https://sportsrevolution.weebly.com/baseball.html
3/3/2018

Penale52(2012)
File:1898 Lousville COlonels.jpg
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:1898_Louisville_Colonels.jpg

As the Industrial Revolution started in 1750, the music also started to improve, a man named “Richard Wager” (The W pronounced as a V) was a pretty famous conductor and wrote and composed multiple pieces such as “Ride of the Valkyries” and “The Flying Dutchman”. Both were created during the industrial revolution and have been made quite famous. The purpose of these two compositions is to entertain and satisfy the listener, both compostitions have also given out the emotions from Richard Wagner. These types of music were targeted towards middle to upper class people with going to the concerts being moderately expensive. Other types of music such as Pub music or public performances were free for all to listen to and would have been mainly about romance or something of the sort.

Richard Wagner(N/A)
The Flying Dutchman
N/A
https://www.opera-online.com/en/items/der-fliegende-wagner-wagner-1843
3/3/2018

The story “A Christmas Carol” was written by an Author named Charles Dickens. A Christmas Carol was first published on December 19th 1843, during the Industrial Revolution. It is about a character named “Ebenezer Scrooge” who is a “Shrewd, Mean Spirited Man” who acts harshly towards everyone who is then visited by three different “Christmas” spirits that “re-educate” him spiritually. The story was created for everyone to read and relate with at the time. The story is showing how pople with money (at the time) didn’t care for the working/lower classes of people, who were living in poverty. Much like howScrooge refused to pay for coal to heat up the room for his clerk =, Bob Cratchit. This story was created to shed light on the poor laws then governing the underclass of Victorian England.

Charles DIckens(2017)
A Christmas Carol
Spark Notes
www.sparknotes.com/lit/christmascarol/section1/
5/3/2018

Charles DIckens(2013)
Why did Charles DIckens write A Christmas Carol?
http://www.gevatheatre.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/Why-did-DIckens-write-A-Christmas-Carol.pdf
5/3/2018

Goldstar Events(2018)
A Christmas Carol
Goldstar Events, Inc
https://www.goldstar.com/national?page=6&mode=infinite
5/3/2018

Croquet became very popular when a sporting foods manufacturer, John Jaques, began selling full croquet sets (John Jaques & Sons is still the biggest croquet manufacturer to the day). Croquet was a game that involved using wooden mallets to hit balls through wooden hoops stuck into the ground. The game Croquet was directed to the more higher class of people, but the working class people would have found it easier to make their own croquet. A bicycle in 1817 was a 23 kilogram, 2 wheeled contraption , the 2 wheels were attached to a then wooden frame, the rider sat on a leather seat nailed into the frame. The Bicycle was invented in Germany but was then taken to France and England, where it became queit popular. At the time, the bicycle wasnt called the "Bicycle" is was called either a "Hobby Horse" or "Dandy Horse". It was invented due to a deaerth of horses because of a volcano erupting in 1815, a cloud of ash spreading world-wide, lowering the temperature, Crops began to fail and animals began dying, including horses. The Bicycle provided a leisurely means of transport for everyone, bike racing then became an Olympic sport sometime later, the bike also revolutionized motor-less transport.

Alex Q.

The first steam engine dates back to the late 17th century, by Thomas Savery. It was originally used to pump water out of mines, it was then improved upon twice more with the last time improved by James Watt, James Watts improvements opened the door to steam locomotives. The first locomotive was built in 1804 by Richard Trevithick, Locomotives were created as a means of transport of resources and people, of course the upperclass of people who rode on the trains got special treatment, mostly middle class and upper class people could afford to travel on locomotives, these locomotives were used to get from one place to another, if people were travelling it was usually used to get to another place, either to watch a sports game, visit family, or just to travel. The working class of people worked on the train, getting to travel as well. Locomotives during the 1800's were a significant means of transport and trade between places and people, they were created purely for the transport of resources and people between towns and cities.

Robert Wilde(2018)
The railways in the Industrial Revolution
ThoughtCo.
www.thoughtco.com/railways-in-the-industrial-revolution-1221650
6/3/2018

Reannon M.(N/A)
The History of Rail Travel

TripBase Blog
http://blog.tripbase.com/the-history-of-rail-travel/
5/3/2018

The phonograph was an early form of Gramophone that used cylinders and was able to record as well as produce sound. The phonograph was invented in 1877. Edison stumbled upon the playback feature of the phonograph accidentally, when Edison spoke into the mouth piece, the sound vibrations of his voice were indented into the cylinder by the recording needle, He was amazed when he played the cylinder and it spoke his exact words back to him. The Phonograph was invented in a laboratory in New Jersey, America. The phonograph allwed modern music able to be produced and allowed music technology to advance off of it and allowed music to be recorded and played. When the U.S.A joined WW1 it allowed soldiers to listen to music from back home.

Americas Library(N/A)
Edison Invents the Phonograph
Americas Library.gov
http://www.americaslibrary.gov/aa/edison/aa_edison_phonograph_1.html

http://www.americaslibrary.gov/aa/edison/aa_edison_phonograph_2_e.html
8/3/2018

He came up with the steam powered coffee roaster to improve the Quality and Efficiency of the coffee being made. The Steam Powered Coffee Roaster used a turning drum with a double right and left augur that acted like a cork screw inside of the drum, pushing the beans from the back to the front. This invention brought the era of mass produced coffee and the start of big coffee corporations like Maxwell House and Folyers. But at the time it was harder to get because it was in one spot until the other companies sprouted.

AGoodKeenSavage(2012)
The siz disruptive innovations of coffee
Wordpress.com
https://agoodkeensavage.wordpress.com/2012/04/05/the-six-disruptive-innovations-of-coffee
7/3/2018

The inventor of the metronome, Dietrik Nikolaus Winkel found out, in 1812, that a double weight pendulum would beat low tempos, even if it was made a short length. Johann Nepenuk Maelzel appropriated WInkels idea. In 1816 Maelzel started making "Maelzels Metronome". A metronome is a device used my musicians and composers that makes timing easier by giving a tick at a selected rate. First thought of in Amsterdam, but manufactured by Swiss, German, French and Americans. It was invented to help out with the timing and tempos of music being created. The metronome was a great success and is still used to this day to help create new songs. Before the metronome was used by almost everyone in the music industry, it was considered a novelty to have one.

Franz Manufacturing Company(1997)
www.franzmfg.com/history.htm
7/3/2018

Clip Art ETC(2004-2018)
Maezels Metronome
Clip Art ETC
http://etc.usf.edu/clipart/73800/73812/73812_metronome.htm
7/3/2018
