Sightseeing in the streets of Flushing

For my research, I decided to walk through a predominantly Asian neighborhood in Queens, Flushing. I haven’t explored this area until recently, unlike the other neighborhoods I’ve visited. People form a single file line at bus stops rather than rush in. The shops have an English name and its name in another language. Different stores cater to a specific Asian country; I’ve visited a few Chinese and Japanese bakeries. Advertisements are also written in another language.

With the demographic of the area being Asian, I’ve noticed many people struggle to speak English. During my walk, I saw a couple needing help, but they didn’t speak English at all. They had to use a translator for me to understand them. Later on, when I went to a store, the worker couldn’t answer my question because she didn’t understand what I was saying. I realized I’m not their target audience. Despite being in the United States, I felt like a foreigner visiting another country.

All in all, I adored my walk in Flushing. It was an enjoyable change of pace and an eye-opening experience. I can’t wait to visit again soon!
