Today we were working on improvising a track and we used texture by adding multiple layers of the same sound to create thick texture. Structure was also changed by changing the timing of when each instrument starts. Rhythm means a regular sound that is used consistently. Harmony meaning notes added together to create a pleasing effect. Melody means a string of notes played together. Timbre is the quality of music sound or voice.

With punjabi it is much easier to change pitch faster while in English more difficult.

November 28 - Listening to Rick Astley and Never Gonna Give you up

1. What do you think was the original idea or starting point for the song in the podcast? What was the artist thinking about when the track was first being created?

The starting point of the song was when Stock Aitken Waterman wanted to create a song using Rick Astley's voice who was not trusted as he did not have a great track record. The original starting point for the song came when Rick told Pete Waterman who had a girlfriend from the same town and was telling him about a bad phone call with her where Rick says well you were never gonna give her up anyways. The first time the idea came it was Stock and Aitken trying to figure out what waterman meant.

2. What part/instrument/musical idea was recorded or written first? Were you surprised to find this out? Why or why not?

The part that was written first was never gonna give you up which was just a phrase they decided to create the song behind and make the title of the song. I was not super surprised as it became the title of the song later on and is the most memorable phrase of the song and is the part remembered the most.

3. Pick a moment within the song-writing/creating process where the artist or collaborators felt inspired - describe that moment, what about their story of their inspiration sounds interesting, relatable, "deep" or memorable to you?

They felt most inspired when they start the songs and you find he plays the chords on the laptop using programming and then sings a bit of a rhythm to it is when they first find that there is something in the song and felt like they could continue with it. What is interesting is how they did not start with a genre or chord but started first with a phrase which is quite an interesting approach to a song.

4. Once you have heard one of the musical ideas in detail (whether it's the drums, vocals, bass, harmony/chords, etc), try to describe how it sounds to you in detail using non-technical language and subject-specific vocabulary.

The vocals are quite complex as it has a quite soulful tone to it with the backing singers playing an important part to lift the vocals and give it the tone it needs for the song. The vocals are also quite high notes with a high pitch in order to fit in with the pop song nature of the song.

5. Describe the conditions, environment, and mindset that helps you feel inspired. Describe a moment in your life where you felt inspired in any way - what were the feelings and thoughts?

The conditions I would need to get inspired for a song are where I would just start listening to music and come up with ideas which I could then just try in the moment to find what sounds nice and feels right in my book. The environment I would need is very personal and very enjoyable where I can just find my mojo and enjoy. The mindset I would need is quite positive and ready to try out anything and make any mistake.

6. What is your understanding of what the artist (from the podcast) intended their audience to feel when they listen?

They want everyone to feel the devotion that Rick Astley has.

7. How do you want your audience to feel when they listen to your finished project from this unit?

I want people to take my music more seriously and wish to find my own take on the music better and find the song changed in a good way where they can appreciate my changes and I could then find the song and really feel like it is my own.

Pre making the song

What is the original piece of music? To which genre and style does it belong?

The original piece of music that I am using is Sajan Das Na, and the style of music it belongs to is Indian Pop.

Who was the original COMPOSER, as well as performer? When was the piece written and released? In what format was it released? (I.e. single, album track, musical,)

The original composer of the song is Xulfi and Abdullah Siddiqui. The singers of the song are Atif Aslam and Momina Mustehsan. The piece was written and released on January 23, 2022. It was first released on Youtube as a music video first and then released on audio platforms.

What are 3 defining musical elements for this style of music the original piece is in? (The 12 musical elements: Tempo, Dynamics, Melody, Rhythm/duration, Harmony, Texture, Timbre, Structure, Metre/pulse, Pitch, Articulation, Instrumentation)

The answer to this question is where you show you have listened carefully to the original song, and hopefully, more pieces of music by different artists within this genre also.

3 defining musical elements for this style of music are melody, texture, and tempo which are very important as focusing on the duration of each note is a defining part of the song, and the change of notes while singing even one word is quite important as well as showing a pattern of notes. The melody is quite distinctive as we can see in Indian music that it moves across an entire scale quite quickly and notes go from one scale to another. Tempo is also usually quite fast and remains that way for most of the song. The texture is quite interesting as it makes use of some traditional instruments that add some unusual texture to the music.

During the song making process

To which genre and style does your cover belong? Why have you chosen this style?

The genre that I am choosing is R and B. I have chosen this style because it looks very interesting to me and is similar enough to the genre of my original song that I could make this in the time available.

What might be a challenge for you? What do you hope to learn from this project?

This might be a challenge because looking at a genre across two different languages means there might be more differences than I think there are. Incorporating instruments part of the original song that are not capable of being part of the cover will be difficult.

What are 3 defining musical elements for this style of music your cover is in? (The 12 musical elements: Tempo, Dynamics, Melody, Rhythm/duration, Harmony, Texture, Timbre, Structure, Metre/pulse, Pitch, Articulation, Instrumentation) The answer to this question is where you show you have listened carefully to music within this chosen style.

3 defining music elements that are part of this song, include the instrumentation, where previously it was driven by guitars it is now driven by the use of keyboards, drums and synthesisers. Another key element is rhythm where they use very syncopated 8 beat rhythms similar to rock and roll. The last key element is the dynamics which have to be quite loud.

What impact do you want to have on your audience? What are 2 musical decisions you are making that will have this intended impact?

I want my song to have an energetic vibe and give sort of motivation to whoever is listening. I will make sure that it has fast tempo and quite repetitive rhythms and pitches having very similar notes throughout the song.

Compare your end product to another song in your new chosen genre/style. What are 2 musical elements that they have in common?

The energy of the music is quite similar with upbeat tempo and consistent rhythm and pitches.

Finish the sentence in a PEA structure: “I have grown as an artist throughout this process because…”

I have now understood the process it takes to record a song and change it as well as how many times it takes for someone to be able to record vocals. My vocals were recorded multiple times and required effort to understand how to problem solve and understand how to take a complex song with multiple layers and turn into a more simple song with more emphasis on piano and vocals. Thinking also about how to learn the chords of the song as it was quite difficult to find and instead looking at singing and then trying to find chords instead is a new experience for me. Trying over and over again helped me understand how important it is to keep going and be resilient with pieces of work in music and understand how time and effort always pays off in this way. Using synths for the first time was also an experience where it was helpful to understand how trying out and going with the flow is also a vital part of music.

Today I plan on finding the second song which I will create an expressive version of. This expressive song I will be creating will be more angry and will focus on using dynamics and articulation to make it feel that way. Once I find the song I will practice the song and get used to making it more angry. I chose the song junoon which originally has a more somber and more reflective tone to the song while also mourning.

Junoon was made by Mitraz and was released in 2022 as a single. This was part of the genre of Indian Indie.

This song is an emotional and heartfelt experience where you get to feel how much the singer is affected by losing his girlfriend. Junoon is a song where the singer feels like he is regretting a lost love and he is seen to be in mourning over those times which he could have spent with them and instead wasted.

Junoon starts with the techno backing track with a quick intro into the more somber tone, with the first line into a recalling of part of the first line. The singing involves high amounts of smooth articulation with one leading to another throughout the song. Later in the song the articulation changes to be more staccato as suddenly the artist is attempting to show more sadness and regret through their singing. The timbre of the vocals in the first part would be described as pure and strained and the timbre in the second part would be described and thin and strained.

These two lessons I finished making the other two recordings for Akhiyaan by changing the same one minute clip and turning it into a more soft and pure song with less expression and then a more angry version with more spite in the song. I feel as in the soft version I could have focused less on including the expression in the song which takes away from the soft and more neutral expression. I did make my voice sound more low and pure though as I did not stumble on my notes at all. For the angry version I feel as if I could have taken away some of the more sad expression involved but I did make a good way of including spite in the song.

This is an remix and will be something they would need as it would help sort of bring back their memories as recently my parents have been quite stressed and help them sort of relax and have some enjoyment. This will challenge me as being able to combine two songs and create a mashup could be quite difficult and will require a lot of thought.

My audience's needs are that they need some happiness and need to be able to enjoy the song and have some enjoyment together.

Wow, what an improvement to the opening phrase, Shaurya. Great breath, tuning and phrase control. I'm very impressed how well you implement feedback. You can hear the smile in your voice, too. Beautiful work particularly in the first 2 minutes.

Can you take another listen at around 2.40? It seems like your tuning and energy drops slightly and it contrasts to the bouncy, light and smiling feeling of the previous parts. Of course, it's another section with different expression but I wonder if it's possible to still make it sound as strong and confident as the previous parts?

The songs I am using are Chand Si Mehbooba and Saibo which are both Indian Film pop songs though one is from the 1965 movie Himalay Ki God Mein and Saibo is from the 2010 Movie Shor in the City. Chand Si Mehbooba is sung by Mukesh while Saibo is sung by Sachin-Jigar, Shreya Ghoshal and Tochi Raina. Both of these songs are from India. The key features of the style is understanding the breath control and the texture of the song in the voice.

Mom further feedback:
Should have changed the pitch at which I was singing Saibo, should have allowed for more time whenever tracks changed before singing. Sounds awkward when it starts in the beginning. Still was quite good but just could have reached further.
Dad further feedback:
It was a very good try at attempting to sing the two songs and was quite fun.
