I now realize I was in school during a time when whole language was taught and phonics wasn’t the cool thing to do. It was a private school so even fewer constraints or standards. I remember Letters of the Week on big posters around the room and we had to come up with words that started with those letters. I remember big book read alouds. Not much else. My mom *claims* I taught myself to read before I even went to K. I have a very visual memory, so whole language seemed to have worked for me and reinforced what I was doing with memorizing words in any case.

I don't remember not knowing how to read. I only remember reading books ALL the time. My mother tells me that I would walk around sounding out words (and driving her crazy). I've always been a good speller and the "rules" of the sounds of our language come very easy to me, so I assume that I learned how to read through phonics instruction.

Bree- Not sure honestly. Don't remember even reading with my teacher in kindergarten or ever in a small group like we do now. I do remember being on a computer with headphones following along to "Pat sat on the mat" type readers.

JANNA My sister! Even though my mom was a Kindergarten teacher, I really learned to read at the age of 4 because my 6 year old sister taught me! We read together every single day when I would get home from PreK. She taught me how to sound words out and would make me sight word flashcards. We still love laying side by side on the beach and reading for hours. :-)

I remember learning to reading in K/First Grade. I can remember doing sight words in Kindergarten and explicit phonics instruction in first grade (one person is s, other person is h - hold hands and together you say /sh/)

I can also remember my 1st grade teacher drawing a slide on the board and having the letters slide down the slide to blend. We read leveled readers with many stories in each, and we got to move up a level when we completed each.

Honestly, I can't remember. Yikes! However, I do have fond memories of my grandmother and great aunt buying me tons of books and magazines to read as a child/teenager. I love to read because of them! 😍
