The quaga or quagga (Equus quagga quagga) is an extinct subspecies of common zebra (Equus quagga). Unlike the existing subspecies today, the cuaga was a zebra with reddish-brown fur that was not striped on the back and hindquarters, and was dotted with black stripes on the face, neck, sides, and mane. The belly and legs were entirely white. These great differences in coloration led to it being initially described (1788) as a separate species

Similar to a large fallow deer, its antlers measured up to 3.5 m from tip to tip. Although it lived throughout Europe and much of Asia from half a million years ago until its extinction in recent times, it is often popularly known as "Irish elk" due to the abundant finds of specimens preserved in the peat bogs of Ireland.
