The most common and widely used types of paintbrushes are Round, Liner, Wash, Angular Wash, and Fan.

Each type of brush comes in different sizes, so you can use it to paint big areas or small details, depending on the size and subject of the painting you are making. The size of the brush or the number of bristles gets bigger as the number goes up.

Let's talk about what each type of brush is best for.


What Kind of Brushes Are Used in Painting?
To get started, you may get a collection of diverse brushes in various sizes and shapes. This allows you to give your creations the thickness or accuracy that you desire. If you want to create a detailed and realistic painting, for example, use softer and finer detail paint brushes.

If your painting lacks detail and features wide brush strokes, larger brushes are preferable.

The types of brush that we can find are:
  • Round Brush: This is a popular brush for details and intermediate lines. The handle and bristles of round brushes are rounded (hence the name). Holding a round brush feels like holding a pencil, and it fits well in the hand. As a result, round brushes are ideal when greater control is required. Depending on the size of the brush, you may create exquisite works of art.

  • Pointed Round Brush: The round, pointed brush is great for delicate lines and complex details. The shaft and tip are round in shape, like a pencil, but taper to a razor-sharp point.

  • Angled or Beveled Brush: This brush has one side that is longer than the other (the bristles form a diagonal) and is used to produce irregular forms, such as flower petals. Furthermore, it allows for more precise painting of surfaces.

  • Flat Brush: Unlike the previous brush, all of the bristles on this one are the same height and size. The flat brush is used for spreading oil paint on surfaces, mixing colors, making square brush strokes, and painting broad lines (and thin, if we put it aside).

  • Rake Brush: To the untrained sight, it appears to be a flat brush, but it really features a mix of long and short bristles. It is particularly useful for creating textures such as feathers, animal hair, grass, and so on.

  • Cat Tongue Brush: It is a hybrid of two brushes: round and flat. It is flattened in the middle, while the bristles at the ends are shorter and bent inward. The finest feature of the 'cat's tongue' brush is its versatility. It's used to create curves, paint details (such as petals), and combine colors.

  • Mop Brush: This brush is intended for blending and creating exceptionally smooth color transitions with no indications of roughness. It is comparable to those used in makeup.

  • Fan Brush: The last brush type on this list is one of the most popular fan brush since it is simple to use and clean. It allows you to paint and blur foliage, clouds, textures, and plants.


Sizes of Paint Brushes
There are several sizes available for each brush type, ranging from 0000 to size 24. In general, you'd use:

  1. Mid-size brushes: These are useful for versatility.
  2. Small-size brushes: These are useful for precision work.
  3. Big-size brushes: These are useful for painting huge areas and washes.

You'll see that there are both short-handled and long-handled paintbrushes. In order to paint at an easel while still being able to see the entire canvas, long-handled brushes come in handy.

Use brushes between sizes 6 and 8 as a starting point, then work up from there as your painting style and money permit.

If you want your brushes to last as long as possible, it's best to give them a thorough cleaning after each use and then let them dry naturally while hanging ("upside down"). Warping will occur if you try to dry them quickly with a cloth or something like.
