He has a pale melancholy face with a thin body. It is said that someone made a mistake and “put alcohol into his blood-surrogate” (46). Due to this mistake, Bernard is shorter than most Alphas. Specifically, he is “eight centimeters shorter than the standard Alpha height” and this troubles him deeply (64). Some of it comes from the rumor about his height caused by mistakenly putting alcohol in his blood-surrogate (64). Bernard knows that he is different and he prefers to be in an environment where no one will mock him. Due to his unusual height, women have laughed at him and “his equals among the men” make a lot of jokes (65). Their mockery makes him feel like an outsider which fuels his preference to be alone.
