Chapter 21: “Marked for Greatness” Connection

In Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Brontë, Jane’s plain appearance, in her mind, is a disability that causes her to humble and degrade herself, but it ultimately sets her up for greatness in her relationship with Rochester.
Jane is unlike the heroine in most romance novels, who is normally described as immaculate and beautiful. This lack of beauty is a “physical imperfection in symbolic terms” that shows she does not live up to the beauty standards of a “normal” novel’s heroine (Foster 202). Through Jane, Brontë defies social class expectations and romance expectations, as she refused to construct Jane as a heroine that conforms to the standards how heroines are normally portrayed.

New Insight Discovered in WSS Introduction

A new insight I discovered when I re-read the novel’s introduction was the meaning and impact of Annette’s horse being poisoned. Antoinette “went up to [the horse] but he was not sick, he was dead and his eyes were black with flies,” and Godfrey later found him and broke the news that “he had been poisoned” to Annette (Rhys 10). Annette’s desperation increases after this crime takes place and “she grew thin and silent” and had no motivation to continue on, as “she refused to leave the house at all” in response to it (Rhys 10). Annette’s means of independent mobility and freedom are lost along with the loss of the horse. There is a loss of innocence in Antoinette through this event as she realizes the harsh reality of what occurred.

1. An obvious imaginary individual I remember from my childhood is Santa Claus. Each holiday season, I cherish the memories I have of the Santa with my older brothers.

2. When I first heard my brothers say that Santa Claus wasn’t real, I felt hurt and tried to believe it was just another one of their pranks on me. I was disappointed that my parents had lied to me and felt sad, as if Christmas would no longer be magical.

3. Looking back, I do not think that it would have been better to not believe in Santa at all. I think this because I value the memories of Christmas that involve the magic and anticipation of Santa coming very much and would not trade them for anything.

In this poem, Pablo Neruda is saying that our lives are extremely limited. It is unknown how long one will live for. The poet also addresses the concept of time when he questions how long “forever” is. This poem brings to question what it means to live and to die. Is living waking up each day and going through the motions, or is it experiencing new things and adventures? In essence, the author is saying that when we stop living life to the fullest, we are allowing ourselves to “die.”

Challenges of Perception

George, the 250 pound “blue” Great Dane from Arizona, challenges my perception of what is possible because it is unbelievable that a dog can grow to be so large. In The House of the Spirits, Allende challenges my perception of what is “real” through the effect of magical realism. For example, Clara is known for her supernatural capabilities and foreshadowing of future events and tragedies. The author might want to “blur” the lines between the natural and supernatural to allow the reader to focus on the unbelievable, but attainable, realities of life, especially within the novel.
