Malala Yousafai starts the story by describing her life as a young girl. Not too young, but around the age of ten or eleven. She is a girl who loves education, loves her family, and is very competitive in her own education. Malala described her life as peaceful and happy. She was proud of her education and her academic skills. She was proud of being a Pashtun, which is a group of Muslim people. Her family of five was truly religious, but they all loved each other so much. They didn't believe in the inequality between genders. Girls and boys were never treated the same in Islam. But her family treated her indifferently from her two brothers Khushal and Atul, which she had described as annoying. They always bugged her, and kept competing for intelligence, personal space, and even the television remote. Her father supported her to do anything, even if she was a girl. The mother supported her father, and told Malala that she could do anything, blocking out the rules of gender inequality.
Things changed in 2008 by Maulana Fazlullah, who was doing radio broadcasts. He said things were too westernized in Pakistan, and that just had to change. Turns out he was a Taliban himself, the group of people who want to block out Western cultures. People died for wearing different clothes, and were beaten to death for supporting women. People escaped Swat Valley at night secretly, trying to get themselves out of the horrible situation that had formed. Yes, I know that things just got interesting, but in order to find out more, you must read the book. These situations are told from Malala's point of view. Malala was not a little girl when she wrote the book, but she was a little girl when these attacks started happening. Though this book is an autobiography, it is written in a style similar to a first person point-of-view fiction novel. It has humor, every little thought, and every feeling. Terrorism, bravery, and education are the three one-word themes for this book.
If someone threatened to kill you if you didn't cover your face because you were woman, how would you feel? Even if you are a boy, swap points of view for just a minute. If you couldn't laugh, wear anything cool or modern, couldn't watch TV, learn anything new, play games, or have the freedom that you behold right now, what would be your thoughts? This is what Malala had to go through. The story of Malala's Yousafzai's life seems normal at first, becomes jagged in the middle, and gets crushed during the near end. And the end... well, that's just something you'll have to find out yourself!
