The Great Migration was a huge movement of African Americans from the South to the North for better work. Around 6 million African Americans migrated. When America was sucked into WW1 a majority of white men left to fight and that left a lot of jobs open to black people and women with good pay. Jobs in the south had poor pay for African Americans so they moved to the North. They got good pay and better working conditions.

Culture (Prohibition)

Prohibition was put in effect because reformers believed alcoholic beverages lead to wife and child abuse and crime. Prohibition banned all alcohol. Most of crime was the illegal making of alcohol and selling of it. One reason for the increase of crime was organized crime. An example of this was what Al Capone did. He killed off his competition and so he controlled the Chicago liquor business. Al Capone was a bootlegger as well. A bootlegger was a person who smuggled in alcohol. It got its name because smugglers put the liquor in their boots. When prohibition was put into effect it closed down all the bars. So people started speakeasies. Speakeasies was hidden salons/bars underground. The effect of prohibition was higher increase in crime and lose it money. Because of prohibition bars were put out of business and the government lost money.

The automobile changed what America looked like. Paved roads were put in place for better driving. One example of this is route 66. It is a road that stretched from Chicago to Los Angeles. It was the main way to from these two large cities. Automobiles made more business and it even helped the process at which it is developed. Ford made the Assembly line. This made making cars faster. Ford made the price affordable for everyone. Because almost everyone had cars it was easier for transportation and because they had cars they didn't need to ride the railroad hurting the railroad industry.

Using the airplane made it faster to deliver things faster than the car and train. It would soon be a way to transport people. This would hurt the railroad company too. Companies wanted ways to get their goods to places faster so they used planes to get it there faster. Also because it would deliver people to places faster so people used the plane instead of the train.

Electrical power took coals place. It powered factories machines and home appliances like the refrigerator. Advertisement was used by businesses to help boost their product. It was also used to raise money charities and boost images of businessmen. The instalment plan was made to enable people to buy goods without having to spend a lot of money at the time. One reason why farmers did not do well was because of overproduction. Because there was new technology there was new farming equipment and farmers overproduced and so sales went down bankrupting farmers.

One of the worst tariffs was the Fordney-McCumber Tariff. This raised taxes on US imports by 60%. This made it impossible for Britain and France to sell enough goods to the US to pay back their $10 billion debt.

Germany was experiencing terrible inflation. Germany couldn't pay back their large debt so French troops marched into Germany. Charles G. Dawes loaned Germany $2.5 billion to pay back to Germany and France. Then Britain and France pay America back and then America would make a little more money when Germany repaid its loans. This is known as Dawes plan. Harding was the 29th president of the United States. Even though he looked like a president he had a tarnished reputation of criminal activity. He wasn't involved but his cabinet did and Harding went down with them. One scandal was the tea dome scandal. The tea dome scandal was a bribery incident.
