La Pasión según San Mateo es un Oratorio, es decir, una obra religiosa en la que se refleja el estilo de la música dramática escénica, contiene arias y coros. Trata sobre  el sufrimiento y la muerte de Cristo según el evangelio de San Mateo.

Como su propio nombre indica, esta obra es religiosa, algo poco común en este autor. Por eso se reconoce como una de las más exclusivas y significativas de su carrera.
